I have this one friend at work, that laughs uncontrolably when she sees someone fall down. She has warned us that she is like that, and means no harm when she does it.

    oh heck yeah!

as long as they are not hurt, of course.
  2. MissSuzie
Yes and I laugh even harder when I see someone hit their head on something.
    1. BetsyIckes
I've caught myself sneakering over bumped heads already!
    2. MissSuzie
I can't help myself...I find it hilarious (except when it happens to me of course).
  3. Epicharis
Only if it's funny...if it looks like they hurt themselves I usually cringe.
    1. BetsyIckes
Oh That's me at work when they faint!
  4. AkinNuAn
Hell yeah! I even laugh at myself when I fall too. I love the 'Didn't hurt' falls lol
    1. BetsyIckes
I've had some hillarious falls while roller skating!
  5. Anok
As long as it's not a nasty fall, then yes.
    1. Floormodel
      same here.
And I can laugh myself to tears at some of those video clip shows with people falling over, probably because I know they don't put them on there unless the people weren't injured.
  6. sensitivemuse
it depends, one time I didn't laugh when someone slipped on an ice patch, she fell on her tailbone. That wasn't funny.

However if it was someone trying to think they were hot and tripped over their own feet well, they're just asking for that right?
    1. BetsyIckes
OOOOooooo That sounds like pain! Can't say I'd laugh at that!
  7. Stillthinking
Usually it's me that's falling, so no. I don't. I usually try to scrape my dignity back together and walk off.
    1. Epicharis
I always laugh when I fall over!
    2. BetsyIckes
I usually look around first to see if anyone saw me LOL
    3. BetsyIckes
In public if I fall, I have a habit of scoping the room to see who all saw me! Especially if it was one of those falls was because I was moving too fast for my own good.

I have a different sense of humor than most people.

One of the things I found a little funny was when someone was showing us a grave site in the winter, he almost broke his skull falling backwards on the ice in the cemetery.
    1. BetsyIckes
Oh Man! Now that might have hurt!
  9. AmyOops
yup, guilty. and my kids hate it (its usually them that fall)
    1. BetsyIckes
Sometimes it is a nervous laugh
    2. AmyOops
      no, its just funny

    Depends on the circumstances.

I still enjoy "3 Stooges" shorts, for example.

In the circumstance you describe, I'd be inclined to assume that your co-worker was telling the truth. I've noticed that not everybody is exactly alike: and some people do have reactions which are not idea.

What's described sounds like a big case of nervous laughter.

Assuming that she doesn't run trip-wires, drop banana peels, or otherwise try to make people fall: I'd chalk it up to another example of individuality. Annoying, maybe: but probably better than obsessive knuckle-cracking.
    1. BetsyIckes
Some people laugh out of nervousness, rather then cry. It is just a reflex with them
    2. Norski
      Too true.

I've had to deal with my own impulses to laugh. No, let's be honest: guffaw.

Humans - watching them can be better than birdwatching.
  11. Norski
I've fallen a few times - quite a few, actually - and that sort of laughter might be annoying. On the other hand, over-the-top care and concern can be downright embarrassing.

    Not entirely off-topic:

Several years ago, while visiting a regional hospital (can't remember why), I was walking down a corridor, passing a nurses' station. This was before I had my hips swapped out.

One of my legs went into failure mode at that point, and I did what I always did: leaned against the best-placed solid object. Which, in this case, was the station's counter.

So, there I was, in a hospital, quietly hanging onto a nice, solidly-constructed counter, about 30 degrees off vertical.

    No problems.

I was just waiting for my legs to get back online, so I could maneuver myself upright and proceed.

The hospital staff didn't know that, of course.

One of the people on the other side of the counter, with a rather concerned expression and tone, asked: "Are you all right?"

It was funny!, in context - but all I could manage at the moment was to point my eyes toward her with a 'depends on your definitions' expression. I was able to reassure everyone there in about a minute, happily.

    What's the point?

Falling down can be funny - I don't know enough about humor theory to say exactly why - but it can be funny. Even to the fallee.
    1. BetsyIckes
I have to agree about the over-the-top care!
  12. JoelKlebanoff
Never! Well, not if it's me who did the falling.

If it is someone else, maybe. It depends on the circumstances.
    1. BetsyIckes
      Yeah the circomstances mean lot!
  13. Sam1982
Yes, especially when its a really ungraceful fall, legs in the air kind of thing
    1. BetsyIckes
Hahaha I fell down in a room full of people like that! And the one lady yelled "Hey look at the Michael Jackson move!" We all had a good laugh!
  14. MarriedMayhem
Shamelessly so...BUT I then help them, so the karma is all sorted =)
    1. BetsyIckes
Sometimes we just can't help it! A sneaker will just leak out and I will think to myself, did I just do that?
  15. idealpinkrose
it depends, if it is a kid or someone I hate then I laugh but if it's an old person, I don't laugh but take pity on him/her.
    1. BetsyIckes
Yes I must agree. I've seen some elderly people fall already and the outcome usually isn't good.
  16. ZyberDon
No, I'll turn around and make guffaw!
  17. ZyberDon
    Only for crazy people falling!
    1. BetsyIckes
Oh I've seen a few of them fall too!
  18. dsriharsha
    I get knocked down
    But I get up again
You're never going to keep me down
  19. Jaybetee
my wife and her friends have an uncanny talent for taking spills...and I laugh every time!
    1. BetsyIckes
It must be a woman thing or maybe our shoes!
  20. bettieblogger
was leaving a bar years ago, slipped on the ice and fell .. well, kind of. I got my coat stuck on the door and was just hanging there. My friends were laughing too hard to help me off my hook. But, some drunk guy tipped me 5 bucks .. good times, good times ...
    1. BetsyIckes
Too bad you couldn't have put that on Youtube LOL It must have been funny to get a tip!
  21. MissSuzie
I blame this thread (or the fact I was up way too late last night), but I took a spill down my stairs this morning and no, I didn't laugh.
    1. BetsyIckes
Oh Man! That's not good! I hope you feel OK!
    2. MissSuzie
I'm fine and am actually laughing about it now.
    3. BetsyIckes
That's good. I bet you'll be a little stiff tomorrow!
  22. FancyObsessions
lol the question made me laugh.
Um I suppose it depends how hurt they are.. Can't laugh at someone when they are bleeding but if they are laughing too, I don't think a chuckle or two will hurt.
    1. BetsyIckes
Yeah Its OK to laugh with someone LOL
  23. bladeaxe4
she has fallen for the better parts of her being unwoven by her own choices , uncontrollable for her !
    1. bladeaxe4
its just a 5 min talk to set her right, what scares you , though ???
    2. BetsyIckes
Just had me confused that's all
  24. Jeunelle
I only laugh if they fall going up the stairs.
    1. BetsyIckes
I've been guilty of falling up stairs LOL They aren't too bad! Falling down stairs can be another story! Been there too! I know, I sound like a clutz!
  25. mattiasx
Depends. If somebody seriously hurts themselves, then no. I'll only laugh if they laugh about falling, which I would imagine means they haven't hurt themselves.
    1. BetsyIckes
      Yes I must agree!
    2. mattiasx
My friend fell off a stage one time and seriously twisted her ankle. It wasn't broken, fortunately, but it was REALLY swollen.
  26. farangrakthai
Depends. I wait for the "someone" to get up without harm before laughing...
    1. BetsyIckes
Yeah that is the best action to take. Don't want to add salt to injury!
  27. Alcomum
Yes usually! Unless it is a little kid or an old person, then I'll offer to help. Or unless there is blood or lack of movement...

Than again, people ALWAYS laugh at me when I spill drinks on myself. Amazing talent for a grown woman...
    1. BetsyIckes
Luckily I haven't seen one with lack of movement! Thank God for that!
  28. HollytheHousewife
oh hell 2 the yea! it's even funnier when they get mad at ya for laughing ~ friends and family ~ not strangers
  29. Arcticulates
No! Seen too many seriously injured on the ice to think it's funny..

But someone falling on TV shows I find hilarious!
    1. BetsyIckes
Yeah, I've seen some nasty falls on ice. One co-worker had a spiral fracture of her leg. That was the worst one I've seen in awhile.

TV falls came make you break some stitches! LOL

I'm working at a college library in the reference room right now. About 5 minutes ago, a student walks up to a group of friends and says "hey baby!" all smooth, and sits on a nearby table. The table tips and he falls flat on his bottom. The entire room busted up. I admit, I laughed. It was just too classic. And he took it well.
    1. BetsyIckes
hahaha that even had me laughing! What a smooth operator! It sounds like the only thing was hurt was his pride!
  31. siralmo
    yes .. yes i do
  32. kat822
yes I admit it, I laugh hysterically especially if the one falling is me
    1. HollytheHousewife
me 2 guess what,I fell down in wal-greens just yesterday. We all laughed until we cried!!!! I'm startin to laugh about it all over again. hahahaha
    2. siralmo
      yes that aswell

i love the ones where you only half fall and then you try to make look normal
  33. kat822
The best time was when I fell out of my desk chair in front of all my students, I just layed on the floor and laughed for about 5 mins
    1. HollytheHousewife
ur like me,but don't ya think it's sooooooo much funnier when someone os all prim and proper about it!
    2. BetsyIckes
That one had me laughing just now. I could picture myself doing that one!
  34. HollytheHousewife
yea,but I don't ever try to make it look normal. If I'm fallin I just go ahead and get it over with! hahaha
  35. kat822
I make the best of it hell I almost lost my balance and fell down a flight of stairs at school friday, I just realized I am a complete clutz
    1. BetsyIckes
Now that one sounded painful! YIKES!
  36. HollytheHousewife
yea,but ain't it soooooooo funny when a snob tries to catch herself! I luv it! I'm sooooooooooo bad!
    1. BetsyIckes
There has been a few snobs I wish would fall down. I haven't been that lucky to see one go down!
  37. codesucker
your all going to hell. Especially the lady at your job.
  38. roentarre
I would say "shit" as I could be potentially prosecuted for being the cause of his/her downfall.
  39. voodooKobra
Yes, and I would expect others to do the same to me. Don't disappoint me!
  40. yourfindit
Always! It's a free and completely hilarious comedy skit and I never waste a chance to laugh. One time i laughed so much while i was leaning back and the chair i was on broke.
    1. BetsyIckes
I don't think I ever laughed that hard! Did everyone else start to laugh too?
  41. yourfindit
Yup! the joke was on me.
    1. BetsyIckes
Laughing can be contagious at times! I wish I was there to see that one!
  42. archiegottlieb
only when i fall. it doesn't happen often, but when it does, i feel like it's a reminder to stop being so serious, so i laugh.
    1. BetsyIckes
That's a good thought! I'll have to remember that the next time I fall down!
  43. BetsyIckes
Hey I fell down the other day and I laughed because it looked so stupid!
  44. Borninheels
Hell ya I do. I love it when I see people trip and then try to catch themselves but end up falling anyway! Its even funnier when I am the one that falls! Good time!
    1. BetsyIckes
I know that kind of fall! YIKES! I think I've done that!
  45. hatingtherain
    No, i don't think it's funny.

Unfortunately, I usually overreact, and cause them even further embarassment.
  46. JamCan
If they don't appear to be hurt, I laugh secretly.
  47. amybyrd21
Depends on what the situation is. If they are edlery then no not at all. But if they are being stupid then yes I laugh til I get tears in my eyes. I picked up a lady one time that fell off a 6 ft high porch because a bee chased her. She was drunk and thought the bee was going to attack her. That one I laughed at after I dropped her at the ER.
    1. BetsyIckes
OOOOooo I've seen the elderly fall and it is not a laughing matter!
But falling off the porch drunk can be! Good thing she was drunk, probably kept her from getting too serious of an injury!
  48. LolitaV
only at my children to the point where when they fall now, they just laugh it off. falling is no biggie.i mean the EARTH is orbiting and we manage to stay up 90% of the time that in itself is a feat. so in my house whoever falls gets laughed at and now, no one cares. if you fart/burp and you don't say "'cuse me" we mock you too btw.
  49. melindaville
I agree with the majority--if the person is not seriously hurt and it looks comical, I laugh. When I fall down, I am always the first person to laugh!
    1. BetsyIckes
Usually when I fall, I end up laughing hysterically at myself. I'm sure it isn't a pretty sight to see me fall lol!
