The question Im asking is;

do you like to read what you write?

I like to re-read posts Ive written a couple of times and it has nothing to do with proof reading or correcting mistakes. As much as I like to read other peoples blogs, I like to read mine as well. I think it would be unfair to the reader if the author didnt like to read his own writing, it almost makes it a waste of time for the reader.

While blogging, I edit at least 3 times what I'm writing. I think I have improved a lot, but I need to improve my grammar which using dictionary help a lot. I think in about 2-3 years, the dictionary will not have any secret for me.
    1. thefly
Yeah, I proof read my posts but do you like to read what you wrote? I find myself sometimes pulling up old posts and still having a kick out of what I wrote.

Yes--I like to read what I write--but I do so with a critical eye to see how I can improve my writing. It's not so much to just read it for fun (because I know what I said), it's to see how I can improve the form and flow.
  3. augustdreamt
I do, actually. I think that I've written some good stuff and I like to revisit it sometimes.

I LOVE what I write about. Exposure, education, information on an industry people usually aren't even aware of! Most people like to see adoption as rosey and peaches n' cream but in reality there is a huge industry behind it built on making billions of dollars and this industry doesn't give a crap about children. Exposing them gives me pleasure. I think about it when I'm not at home, and feel better after a long post on weeks of research I've been doing. Sometimes people get offended, but the truth needs to be spoken even if it shocks many. Yes, i LOVE what I write.
    1. thefly
I hear ya, I like to come back to certain ideas that I put a lot of time into and re-reading it because Im glad I could so eloquently explain myself.

I do as well, but with dyslexia, it's almost necessary to read it that many times - and yes, the format makes a difference.

I can't edit at all while I'm composing it - I have to use the preview.

Then I read it two or so more times when it's already posted onto my blog, because the white on black helps me catch errors I otherwise miss. And that goes for more than grammar and spelling, but also comprehensiveness, flow, etc.
    1. thefly
Yeah, I had a friend in college that had dyslexia and I would help him proof read most of his papers. He was a brilliant writer but just couldnt get the grammar down. His flow of ideas from sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph was excellent. I really liked reading his writing and helping him out.

I do, too. Funny actually, I learn a lot while reading my own stuff. It's sometimes the "oh yeah, I totally forgot" kind of feeling.

Often I am also envious of myself! I think the stuff I wrote when I was sixteen or so was actually brilliant and I would love to meet that guy again and have a long and deep conversation with him, get some writing tips.

I do edit too, but I do sometimes switch off the critical attitude and just read for fun.

By the way, I am currently working on a post about writing and editing ... hope to get it done today and feel free to check it out then
    1. thefly
I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes when I read really old stuff scribbled down in a notebook I try to remember my state of mind and try to write like that again. I think Ive grown as a writer since my adolescence days and matured in my skills but I still like to go back and read old blog posts and old notebooks because its still really interesting to read. Even though the author is yourself, its like reading someone elses writing.
    2. Arashmania
Exactly! it's actually much better than a photograph, you get a glimpse into what was going on inside of you at the time.
    3. thefly
I hear ya Arashmania, it really does open your mind to old emotions and ideas and you get more of a feel for the writing than just remembering it.
  7. kat822
Yes, for the most part, some of the darker stuff makes me cry when i re read it

and thank you for following the rules fly if I see a reposting of the community guidelines one more time today I am going to stick a fork in my own eye!
    1. thefly
I hear ya Kat, when I re-read a lot of my creative writing I dont necessarily cry but it does make understand the train of thought. Not all of them are pulled from personal experiences but the ones that are do evoke certain dead emotions.

And of course I would follow the rules, Im a good little fly.

When I look at my cartoons, I always see ways they could have been better. Maybe some day I'll be satisfied with one.
  9. jackpayne
I read and re-read with a critical eye. Before publication and after publiction, the burning question is always, "How to improve?" This is a habit I got into from my first book through my 56th, and on into blogging.

A life-long habit I will most likely never break.
  10. sulz
haha, i get what you mean, thefly, i do that too! and sometimes when i read my archives, i feel surreal because i can't believe i was capable of that! but sometimes i don't like what i wrote but i have a personal policy of standing by what i said. i just don't read it.
    1. kat822
no i don't think so, I read a post I wrote about my dad and it just made me appreciate him more and therefore tears lol
    2. thefly
Yeah me too. I stand by whatever I say and I say whatever it takes, haha. Pepsi and Coke taste similar, there I said it, someone had to say it, it had to be said, haha.

lol I hear ya sulz and jackpayne
    1. sulz
i do that crying bit too! is that narcissistic?
  12. MadameX
I almost never look back at anything once it's complete.
  13. aningeniousname
I'm never happy with what I've written, I always think I could have done better. But like MadameX said above, once I have finished it thats it for me it's dead and I move on to the next thing and hope it's better.
    1. thefly
Thats too bad, you might find some good material in old writings. Something you may have touched on but didnt expand. Maybe you just liked a style of writing you had and subconsciously moved away from. You never know what you can find in old writing and even recent writing. I get a kick out of my stuff still.

    Oh, I love what I write - otherwise I wouldn't write it;-)

Yes, I do read back through my earlier posts and writings. Sometimes I find typo's, sometimes I wonder WTF was I thinking, but many times I'm blown away by how good that stuff is, That I've written.

Now if I could just get the rest of the world to agree with me:-D
    1. thefly
Thats my problem too, haha. I just need the world to realize what I realize, that I write awesome, haha.

I hear ya though, a lot of old stuff is really good and I go back to it from time to time. It really is like reading someone else's thoughts because it was in a different state of mind. Not necessarily for the grammar or flow but just for the ideas.
  15. voodooKobra
Yes, but if I go back more than a year I begin to hate my writing.
  16. kat822
jan WtF , ahh weekend words lol
    1. thefly
I believe those are weekend letters, haha.
  17. drjay1966
I have a love-hate relationship with what I write. I don't post it until I'm really happy with it (one reason I don't post every day--it takes me a long time to get it to where I really like it). So, I enjoy re-reading it. However, I always find stuff that could be better, as well--just can't turn off that critical eye.
  18. Wisco
People tell me they like what I write and I figure I'll have to be satisfied with that. I blog current events and, if I rewrote and edited as often as I'd like, I'd be blogging history
    1. rmaxwell142
And then there's those of us who DO blog history!
  19. keyster94
I like to read some of my stuff. I'm very critical of myself, so I don't always like what I have written (blog, poem, creative or otherwise) even if others like it.

There are things that I love though. Things that I am slightly shocked that I wrote.
    1. thefly
I know, I found an old notebook the other day and I thought to myself, "did I really write this, man, I was awesome, what happened? haha"
  20. CreativeJunkie
I always go back and re-read my posts. Sometimes I do it to re-live the memory, sometimes it's to examine my style, sometimes it's because I'm looking for some inspiration for another post.
    1. thefly
I do that too. Sometimes I still even laugh at my old posts.
  21. soonergirl
I agree. I think the author should be excited about their own writings. I think it's a good thing.

    www.soonergirl.wordpress.com
  22. rmaxwell142
I like what I write for the most part. It seems like there's always one post every so often where I realize, "Wow! That was a really good post! All my ideas came together and it was well written!" But of course, that is not every post, so I try to do the best I can and move on from there.
    1. thefly
I know, I have a couple of those and I go back to them from time to time just because they are just still fun to read.
  23. LazyThirdEye
Yeah, I enjoy what I write and what my friends write for our blog. If I didn't I wouldn't post it to begin with. Although, sometimes I'll re-read a post and say ''Why did I phrase it like that?'' or ''How come I didn't catch that error?'' You know, little things like ''their'' will be written as ''there' or whatever.
    1. kat822
watch it the grammar police might get you lol
  24. Arashmania
And it shows, when you're not excited or thrilled about what you're writing you can't expect the reader to be! Sometimes i laugh out loud ... lol ... when I read things I had written earlier.
    1. thefly
Yeah, I still get a kick out of some old posts. Certain posts are still relevant and are still funny. I just hope that people find my stuff funny too, haha.
  25. Arcticulates
I notice changes in my thought realm and writing style when I go back and read stuff I wrote years ago.

Some I like some I don't. Some seemed so important to me at the time I wrote it, yet when I look at it now, I think...hmmmm...I wonder why I saw it that way or...

I like to read what I have written, and some are written with such depth and other things seem so shallow.
    1. thefly
It really is interesting to see the range of topics and style of our writing. If anything, just to reflect back on thoughts. Not to dwell but to learn and other times just to slap the forehead and go "WTF", haha
  26. kat822
Quit spamming flys f&&king thread and at least make a comment that makes sense
    1. thefly
Thank you Kat! I was waiting for my favorite hall monitor to come around, haha.
  27. kat822
    only for you sweetie muahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
oh rg is writing a new post as we speak, I can't talk to him til he's done whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
    1. thefly
oh, poor you. Tell that "wanker" I said whats up.
  28. Friday13
Of course I like what I write. Would I bother writing if I didn't?

But ... I only read what I've written right after I'm done writing, to check for typos or see if there's anything that could be added, or expressed in a better way and, perhaps, to see what part of the post a comment is making reference to. Otherwise, no. Once it's out there, it's out there and quickly becomes past history (of myself).

I might consider going back to read some of the earlier stuff ... but only if that were the only thing I can do at any given moment. I mean ... after looking at some (usually short) forum posts of mine from last year or earlier, and seeing how not-so-helpful or even not-so-mature they are, I don't want to think what a larger body of text written by me two years ago might contain! Oh, the horror.
    1. thefly
Old stuff is always fun to look at even if it is really bad. I still crack up at how horrible I once was even though I would never admit it but seeing it and reading it makes me realize how far Ive come. Makes me laugh too because back then, I never saw any problems, haha.
  29. xmarks
I like what I write. I like it when others read what I like. I really like it when other people like to read what I write.
  30. contentconnection
of course i do... esp on matters of the heart...
    1. thefly
I know what you mean. Those types of writing can really take you back to a certain state of mind or an emotion from long ago and it just reminds you of a different time. Almost like you are seeing into another person's head.
  31. CrotchetyOldMan
I looked at some really old posts of mine from a while ago. I used to blog at another place, so I've been around since April 2, 2004.
I look at some of them, and think, "Wow, I really did have issues."
    1. thefly
haha, but isnt it interesting to see how far your writing has come.
  32. Truebird
I do, like it, especially when it feels like a post has come to life. I can be pretty self critical when I read back and think "oh that was pointless" or "wow, that's just plain sentimental" but sometimes it feels like I've actually nailed a thought or idea and when I do it makes me happy.
    1. thefly
I know what you mean, when I do that I like to go back to it and re-read it just to remind myself that I can in fact write, haha. Give myself a high five.

I think a lot about my own writing and so I am drawn back to my own writing, to polish it, tweak it, caress it, admire it. It's probably not as good as I think it is, but what the heck, it's mine!
  34. shagnast2100
absolutely, if you don't like what you do, why even do it? I do the same thing. I read my posts all the time. Usually catch mistakes all the time haha.
  35. ThriftShopRomantic
I like some posts better than others, but overall, I feel the stuff I write is along the lines of what I hope it would be.

I love the writing process, and how seemingly nothing can become something.
    1. thefly
I know what you mean. Sometimes when I really think about it, its really interesting to see all the words come together to beautifully explain what you are trying to get out.
  36. ranist22
Yes I do. Rereading it brings back the intensity of the moment and its very rare when I substitute one word for another. The original stays, with all it's defects.
  37. sarahspy

ya, at the time of writing in my own blog, i write what my mind and heart says to me. that's why i like writing.
and i like to read others blog too because i get new ideas and views form others.
  39. doffer
I do go back to my earlier stuff, and sometimes I do tweak the wording a bit. Really I'd find it hard to keep on blogging if I didn't like what I write.
  40. markeu
I am trying to make my writing as much of a discipline as possible, regular activity, good editing a couple of times, and then I leave it alone.
  41. hiteshrawat
i love writing about movies and my daily experiences on my blog........i started blogging to make some pocket money(being a student)

but now i do cause i like it
  42. crawler
Yes I do re-read what I wrote, it some times helps with correcting your mistakes if any, and there are mistakes in many posts if we take a closer look due to human error.
  43. robinj
words are the voice of the heart I like to look back at times and see where mine was at certain stages of my journey
  44. jazzy2103
I guess I like what I wrote.I like it to have an air of 'intelligence'.Not necessarily inteligence but as if written by an experience author.I do pull out what I wrote a few months ago now and again but I don't REALLY read it but scan through what I wrote.
  45. jazzy2103
    Also,I wouldn't publish it if I didn't like it.It would feel bad.
  46. kbrummell
I love what I write because it can be related to everyday living. It don't get any better than that.
