Do You Moderate Comments?

Do you moderate comments on your blog? Why or why not? I'm genuinely curious.
I can understand if you blog about something particularly sensitive or controversial, but I find that even a lot of fashion or shopping blogs like mine do, and I can't imagine why.
I don't have the time or patience to moderate them.

I moderate ALL comments to:
(1) prevent the automatic posting of spam;
(2) prevent the automatic posting of comments made only for the purpose of link dropping;
(3) prevent the automatic posting of pingbacks made only for the purpose of link dropping;
(4) prevent the automatic posting of troll comments containing personal attacks, obscenities and threats;
(5) prevent the automatic posting of phony comments generated by software made only for the purpose of link dropping;
(6) prevent the automatic posting of off topic comments.
My thinking on this is that in my home I am a hostess and likewise on my blog I am a hostess. I do not allow any comments to be posted on my blog that I would not approve of or tolerate in my home.-
@dinsquared
(1) On my self hosted domain at thistimethisspace I cleared all the spam last night at 10:15 PM. I now have 64 spam comments in my Defensio spam filter (porno, drug & auto generated phony comments made for link dropping purposes).
(2) On my free hosted sub-domain at onecoolsite I cleared all the spam last night at 10:10 PM. I now have 17 spam comments in my Akismet spam filter (primarily drug and porno but 3 are link drop attempts).
(3) As today is Friday I expect and influx of several hundred spam comments will be caught in the spam filters. Spam always dramatically increases on weekends.

I don't relate to immature people, who believe that getting drunk and high, and then making personal attacks on each other using obscene language is fun. If you do then IMO that's a pity. -
@dinsquared
I forgot to tell you that both of my blogs have comment polices posted on them. If you want to see what they say then click this link and scroll down to About commenting thistimethisspace.com/about/

I approve all comments on my blog before they post. However, I put up all of the comments that aren't directly SPAM related, even if they disagree with a point I was making. Sometimes, I will take that as an opportunity to reply or offer a rebuttal.

I don't moderate my comments, although I do check my e-mail a couple of times a day and read each of them, just in case. For some reason, about a third of the comments on my music blog fall into moderation, but none of the ones I've had to approve were in any way spammy.
Then again, I don't think I've had 63 comments total on my newest blog. I generally fly under the radar for spammers, thank heavens. -
Yes, I find that moderation cuts down on spammers. It gives me more control over what is being posted at my site.

I strongly believe that every blogger ought to have a posted comment policy. I also think the best time to formulate it and post it is prior to getting negative comments and having to make a quick judgment call as to what to do about them. When I posted a thread on this here at BC on the forum I got some great feedback from members and it is reflected in my policy now, as well as, in my blog post.
How to handle negative comments

You know, i believe i had at least one negative comment on my blog, but it was deleted by the blog administrators. I didn't have the chance to read it for what it was.
I wouldn't mind having someone who honestly feels that my blog is rubbish, after all it does reflect on my own capabilities on my blog.

It's a shame. Without the ability to feedback and cross communicate, the internet is just...TV. However even that gets monetized. Bummer. We are currently on Wordpress (moveing to our own domaine soon, and will probably hassle Timethief for some tips LOL) which has a pretty efficient spam filter. I moderate just the same 'cause if a human takes the time to post, I figure I should take the time to recognize the effort.

Yes I do moderate my comments. Thank God, I don't receive spammed comments. However, I do receive comments from the sep other half. He leaves hate comments. Isn't that childish or what? Nothing else better to do with his spare time...
3 comments and fake 3 different email urls in less than two days is where I draw the line. I'm turning my comments off. I had them on so that my visitors would be able to ask me questions about the topics in my post. -

I do moderate them--but I talk about heroin addiction, prostitution, etc. And I am glad I do moderate them. I have had a couple of very nasty comments left to me where people have called me names, have told me they hoped I have AIDS, or that I am a tramp and going to hell, etc.
Now this has only happened a couple of times but I don't want to have those comments on my blog. -
I moderate comments from all first time commentators. If I have approved a comment from you previously, any subsequent comments will be automatically approved. According to my dashboard, Askimet has stopped 7,824 spam comments over about a year and half. When I remember I try to take a look at the spam folder from time to time. Very, very occasionally a legitimate comment gets flagged as spam.

For some reason I get stupid amounts of spam so I've got it set to approve any comments made by an anonymous user. I don't get many comments so it makes it easier when people do comment not having to trawl through 6 pages of spam comments to get to the one legitimate one. And I approve all legitimate comments, regardless of whether they agree with me or not.

I presently don't, but if I start having any problems with spammers or anyone that is mean, I will
I had to change my word verification setting the other day, as it wasn't working and no one was able to leave me any comments, which put some people off I think
I'm leaving it how it is for now... -
Just reading back on some of the responses in here, I don't understand why people feel the need to leave insults and nasty comments on people blogs.If they have nothing nice or constructive to say, why do they feel the need to be so horrible and say/write anything at all!!?? I am also on flickr, and a long time ago I had problems with two people, and had to end up blocking them
-
Yeah it was being a pain wasn't it HalfCrazy! The thing is I didn't even realize for ages it wasn't working , until someone finally sent me a message about it (which I appreciated!)
-
I always moderate comments. I get some strange ones sometimes which have nothing whatsoever to do with the topics or blogging. Moderation also might have a discouraging effect on those who want to have their idea of fun. If people are really interested by the blog and have comments to make pertaining to it, I always publish them. I have had lovely people write to me and it's great to hear from them.

I have a spam filter that prevents blatant, off-topic, advertising, but that is all I limit.
Since I am a proponent of free speech and an opponent of censorship, I end up being more lenient than my spam filter in some cases and have - upon occasion - let a couple of blocked messages through if they were on topic and the blatant link dropping wasn't to sites that would would be likely to rip off my readers if they purchased their products. -
I moderate comments the same as I clean the PC registry. I utilize commentluv so it's a plus for a blogger leaving the comment since it leaves the commenter's latest post and clicking on it brings the reader to their site. It's a traffic giveaway. You get what you give in return. I also use Akismet to prevent spam comments--drugs, links, etc.
-
well yeah but only for the first 2 times. I also keep a nice filter on some obscene words and too many links. I got it in control. AKISMET...RULEs!!!

Its exactly what TimeThief said, moderation prevents spam, link dropping, and hate mail. I have a semi-political and controversial blog. While I am open to everyone's comments and opinions, I once got a comment calling me a nigger-loving cow. I was really weird considering that I am black (not that I am saying that word relates to me), but still weird.
