I have a somewhat technical blog and there are so many great things within the scope of my blog subject to write about. ALL of them require a good bit of research to ensure the details are accurate and all information sources are properly credited for thier "contribution".

HOW do I decide what to write about next? How do I guage what features of my blog are of greatest relevance to my audience? Keeping in mind that I have very little understanding of how to track who has been to my blog and where they went in my blog when there are no comments left.

The best place to start is to start with what you feel is most important. Don't worry about the minutiae since it will distract you from focusing on the more important issues.
If you are not interested in a topic is is unlikely you will write the most interesting article. Good luck!

I actually don't plan my blog very well like you do but I do make a research before I post them to my blog. Currently my blog focuses on how-to stuff and other online tips such as Adsense. What may readers will actually find in my blog are information that they may find useful when they venture on making extra money from blogging.

If you have sometime please do check out my blogs and if you could leave an honest comment I would be grateful to accept it. Thank You.

I too have a largely technical, scientific blog and so I usually have a topic in mind for one thing or another . . . I try to keep it useful to a large audience, but every once in a while I post something not so useful, but what I find amusing.

I do a bit of both, and it is not just related to blogging but writing in general.
Sometimes, I do a lot of thinking when I decide that I want to write something. Since English is not my first language, and as I think in Telugu(thats an Indian language), it takes time to put my thoughts into words and takes a fair bit of planning.

Other times, it is totally spontaneous. For instance, my recent post, a poem that I wrote, was written in a matter of minutes. I read some other post of the same name and decided to build on that, and words came naturally and I finished the post within minutes.
