set small targets and accomplish each. you will feel satisfied then breeds the motivation. this is my way.
    1. footiam
That's a very good idea. Thanks!
  2. Xight
Make a list. If some things on the list seem too much to want to do at once, break that item down into smaller, manageable sections. A big job won't be as daunting when its just in parts, and you won't put it off as much.
    1. footiam
I'll make a list just yet!
  3. ghostytwofish
I'll save this question for tomorrow.

I'd like to say I don't but I can't really make my mind up about it.
    1. gosmelltheflowers
Hhhmmm...sounds like vacillation to us. You'll need 10cc's of determination and quick-mindedness stat!
  6. suburbqueen
I feel guilty when I procrastinate. I like to get things done as soon as I can so I don't have to stress as much...with that said, I have yet to start Christmas shopping
  7. jackpayne
Most people hesitate because they question the validity of what they are writing about. Best to follow the old axiom: When in doubt anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.
  8. robinj
I dont know I will get back to you
  9. nibbie03
I drink a glass of wine. It helps me get over lots of things : )
  10. Xight
    I'm here reading this aren't I?
  11. footiam
Thanks everyone, especially for the tips to overcome procrastinating. So, I wonder about the others. Do they procrastinate?
  12. clioandme
    Do I procrastinate?

Let me get back to you on that.
  13. globalgirl
Let's wait until tomorrow on that one, OK?
    1. footiam
      Yes, let's wait!

I did not used to, but once my twins were born, I have begun to do this more often than not.
    1. footiam
      It's a luxury, yeah?
  16. gosmelltheflowers
We've tried to attend procrastinators anonymous but have never made it there yet!

Bottom line is we lean towards the 'nice to do' rather than the ' must do' unless one really, really has to.
    1. footiam
      Ha! Ha! That's great!

I no longer think of it as procrastinating. Over the years, it's become very clear to me that I operate best with a solid block of uninterrupted time--for a large project, a block that many people would find brought on diminishing returns--and an impending deadline. I know when it's time to get started and how much time I need to block out...but I'm not a person who works well in small pieces over time.
    1. clioandme
How does that comport with an earlier statement about your ability to multi-task? I thought the two things went hand-in-hand. Your statement this evening suggests otherwise.
    2. MadameX
Most of what I do these days isn't large projects. In the course of a given work day I typically edit 15-20 articles, process invoices for contractors, review current legal news and make assignments, update inventory and scheduling, write an article or two or five (depending on the day), meet with some or all of my writers to review current projects in progress, make minor revisions to emails and marketing materials prepared by other people, and any of a dozen or more other tasks. None of those things require immersion.

However, when I'm working on something larger that requires big-picture focus, it's a different matter entirely. For instance, I write articles for attorney newsletters that sometimes synthesize various studies and court cases, each of which are 30 or 50 or a hundred pages long, into a single article. I tend to save those things to work on at home, because it goes much more smoothly if I can hold all of the various pieces of information and how they relate in my mind and work straight through. That's more like when I was in law school, and consistently opted to outline each entire semester course in a single 18-hour sitting...or when I wrote the first 273 pages of my first novel in three weeks.

sometimes I do procrastinate. You know there such time you just can't make a decision. But i often make a decision quickly.
    1. footiam
      We are only human!
  19. Wawaron
I do not overcome: o)) I live with very good agreement.
  20. jackpayne
The good things that come to those who wait might be the things left by those who got there first.
  21. mtchick
I'll let you know later, tomorrow maybe.
    1. footiam
      Yes, let's wait until tomorrow!
  22. stevenwilson
procrastination? i thought that was why we had tommorow's.

    Steven
    1. footiam
This sounds like a great excuse. May use it next time with the boss
  23. brigid
To tell you the truth, I don't. ^^; Usually what happens is I don't procrastinate in the first place (because of a deadline) or things just get to such a point that I have to do something. Like running out of clean dishes. (Or counter space.)
  24. furniture27
Absolutely! And usually work on the wrong things first.
  25. RMania
I'll tell you later, I'm gonna check my e-mail and watch some TV first.
    1. footiam
      I'll listen later.
    2. footiam
Now, You are procrastinating! Make it a new year resolution not to!
  26. kab625
You know, I've been meaning and meaning to get over here and answer that. I don't overcome it.
I wait until I HAVE to do things and that's when I get the most done.
  27. msSmunro
    YES, I procrastinate...terribly.

Im almost all but resigned to it. So long as I dont put breathing off until another day ill get there on everything else :).
  28. Wawaron
All of that is ok... because we procastinate, some other people have a job to replace us... it is very good !
    1. footiam
      It's ok to be human!
  29. gosmelltheflowers
Hi Footiam, you've inspired us to ask this question over at flowers! We've considered holding a 'Procrastinators anonymous' meeting but always wonder if it'll ever get off the ground :-)

    Great topic! www.gosmelltheflowers.com/blog
    1. footiam
I'll pop in and have a peek.
    2. Arvind
Great cartoon you have Flowers! Just added my comment - I was going to wait till later but forced myself to do it right now!
  30. ichaduma
No, not really procrastinating at work or while working on assignments. I'm worse. It's the little stuffs. Like, getting myself a haircut, shopping for a new pair of pants, finding a date (hahaha!), etc ...Gooooddd.. I tend to procrastinate whenever I'm faced with making a decision, that's basically it.
    1. footiam
You are a good worker, ichaduma!
  31. acousticguitarist
when i look at how many icons there are of mine on the discussion board I'd have to say yes

But I've spent a few days sorting out audio and recording a 5 minute audio sample, so maybe I'm hard on myself
  32. Puffmatty
its not procastination just pre-planning on my own schedule
    1. footiam
      Tomorrow never comes!
  33. shadowknight
Ummmmmmmmm I will tell you tomorrow
    1. shadowknight
I am still thinking about it
  34. deerwood
I see procrastination as the putting off of decision making or actions. However, this is not always a 'bad' thing. Sometimes it may be better to put off a decision until you have more or better information. It may also be better to delay taking action until you are able to see actions taken by others.
  35. bloggernoob
it's like asking if i breathe. or asking if i drink water. hmm what do i do to get work done. i try to follow a schedule. i write a daily to do list. i look at my bills to remind myself of why i need to work harder.
  36. harvey96
    I live with it.
    1. footiam
      You are very tolerant!
  37. Theresa111
Unfortunately I do. To overcome this I sometimes get things done.
  38. sephiroth2483
finally I was able to put a comment in after 5 days
    1. footiam
      Happy procrastinating!
  39. lamenews
    never.

whenever i get to it, is when it was destined to be done
  40. RTBjr73
Took me awile to comment on this matter...
  41. JacobDiv
Procrastination is intelligent at times. By putting things off, a lot of things end up not having to be done as I had first thought. If I do everything right away, I end up doing things that don't need my attention. That means wasted energy.
  42. thebigandyt
i'll come back to you soon with an answer
  43. libelula
It's easier for me to procrastinate if I only have one or two things to do in a day...if I fill my day with 'goings on' it's a lot easier to arrange the workflow. So if I'm making a 'list of things to do' I fill it with a lot of things I genuinely want to do and the other things get taken care of as well.
  44. buffedstuff
yes...well no....I will answer you later
  45. DVS
Itend to act before I think, always have done..so it's never really been an issue for me, but as I am slowing a little, coming down the other side of life's hill..I sometimes pause a bit..here and there..just briefly. Does that count?
    1. footiam
I guess one has to take a breather once a while.
  46. siralmo
    DUDE, RESURRECTION MUCH???

you first posted this over a year ago

    ???
    1. footiam
fI suppose so, Siralmo. Just thought of a response for DVS. The topic should be evergreen, I think!
    2. siralmo
well no. i have seen you in here quite a few times and you waited 5 months to answer back, DVS probably doesn't even remember making this comment nor do i think he will care
  47. footiam
that's because I procrastinate. I am doing other stuff besides surfing.
    1. siralmo
nah this thread is dead. its not the first time you've done this

before this, it was 2 months
and before that, it was 1 months
and before that, it was 1 months
and before that, it was 2 months...

where is it going to end?? just for the sake of one more person on your thread
  48. footiam
You are right. I just enjoy taking my time, reading the answers and replying at my own time. Some people hate that but I don't. Sorry, dude. It's not about scoring points. I just enjoy reading what others have to say.
  49. footiam
Okay, see you around siralmo. got to log off and see some friends! No hard feelings! I am sure you will get to see some of my old threads out again some day!
    1. siralmo
      hahaha sure
  50. Mizdemeanor
no... i would do that tomorrow..
  51. LGramlich
I put the "pro" in "procrastination." *L*
Sometimes I use the Nike slogan to push myself; Just DO it.
  52. exit2013
Procrastination is my nemesis. It sedates me. Need...cure.
    1. footiam
I like the sedation part in procrastination. If there is no cure, never mind. A job gets done yet, just later; but still before the dateline!
    1. footiam
      You are normal!
  53. giemiller
sometimes, if i want to finish certain tasks within the day.
    1. footiam
Sometimes, it's a privilege to procrastinate.
  54. NatetheGrate
Overcome it? It's what I do best!!!!
  55. Rivy
Procrastinate? Uh...let me think about this.
  56. sisterofmercy
To overcome procrastination I just procrastinate some more, I find it works.
  57. nikbv
    I'll tell you later.
  58. iratedog
I have to be doing something I enjoy in order not to procrastinate.
  59. newblogmogul
"Procrastination is the thief of time," and time waits for no men or women.
  60. stellak

  61. idealpinkrose
I have to do things right away.
    1. footiam
      That's great!
  62. dsriharsha
    I'll answer this question tomorrow
  63. NYCGirl
    I'm a terrible procrastinator.
  64. crazyTsu
I have the perfect solution.. write the damn things down! Now let me move to other threads on BC..
  65. jonyx
I procrastinate unintentionally most of the time. Little things distract me fairly easily sometimes and I end up forgetting what I had been doing beforehand. Nowadays I also tend to write stuff down on post-it notes and sometimes make checklists.

I think the only thing I've recently been putting off is another medical exam. I'm pushing that thing until the end of time. If it's work you're having issues getting through, doing a bit here and there helps alleviate the drudgery of it all.
