I just finished watching a documentary on the making of the Australian TV series "Skippy the Bush Kangaroo" tonight and I was blown away by the fact that it was taken up worldwide during its run from 1966 - 1968. Something I knew nothing about!

Of course I watched it and its many reruns when I was a kid, but how many of you recall this series?

I watched the show as well, I'm too young to have seen it, even though it was shown in Finland where I'm from... (They said they didn't want a talking animal in Sweden, how funny! The Swedish kids shows sucked so bad anyway that I'm not surprised.) My Aussie husband who is a bit older than me was soo excited to see the show, as he grew up watching Skippy and when they showed the collection of Skippy stuff he regogniced the plate shown first - he had the same one!

They mentioned in the doc that Sweden didn't want their children to watch it because it might give “a misleading impression of an animal’s abilities”. Talking animals in cartoons was quite alright though!

The joy of Skippy was that it "normal" and not Hollywoodised. Ordinary families could recognise real life when they saw it. In Skippy, money was not thrown away on wasteful consumables, the children had serious responsibilities around the house, and violence was deplored.

And to top that off, Skip was a hard working girl!

The only time I've ever heard of Skippy the Kangaroo was in Crocodile Dundee...

Where he scares off the kangaroo killing drunks with a dead roo - and a shotgun...

And he says something like "Good One SKIPPY"
    1. acousticguitarist
      that wasn't the real skippy

Ya... I know... But I figured the reference might have been about this particular Skippy... LOL!

It was, the clip was shown in the documentary as well. Skippy is a legend, and it seems Skippy is to kangaroos what Google is to search engines.

@acousticguitarist: By all accounts the roo in the scene was a close relative of Skippy!
