Twenty years ago, the world changed forever, when the Communist regimes across Eastern Europe and the Berlin Wall, the monumental symbol of oppression and division, was taken down. I have given my thoughts on my blog, samhaydenjr.wordpress.com and included some compelling videos to watch (shameless plug!). If you are old enough, what do you remember of that momentous night? If not, what do you know about it? What do they say to our current times? Were you actually there?

I think that was maybe the first time someone openly used the term new world order: Gorbachev. The entire Societ economy was held up by Western financial and technological assistance. The wall fell when the plug was pulled. See Anthony Sutton's Wall Street and the Bolshevik revolution for some historical background.

I do remember it well, but even more I remember the Romanian Revolution. A rally for Ceasescu in Bucharest in Dec '89 turned against him. Thousands and thousands in the streets of Bucharest just sat down - literally - in the street and wouldn't move. The army and police joined them and that was it for him.

I was always so totally amazed how everyone just sat and how that had so much power.

Yes, I think I have a memory of that pro-Ceaucescu rally that turned on him. Thank you for reminding me of that.

I was very young, but I remember. My family and I lived in (west) Germany in the mid 80s, and I think it caught my attention b/c we had just been there.

I to remember it - well! I also remember many of the later years of the Communist regime and many of the escapes and those that failed too.

Of course I remember, having visited Germany for the first time less than a year before. But I actually was in Berlin on Nov. 3, 1990, the day when West and East Germany were formally reunited, and walked through the Brandenberg Gate into the heart of East Berlin. Everyone was celebrating.

I am so old that I remember the horror when William the Conqueror invaded and fought the Battle of Hastings. Clearly.

And the Magna Carta! I was quite shocked when the King crumbled before the barons and guaranteed citizens' rights.

And the Black Plague terrible terrible time for all of us.

So yes, the Berlin Wall feels like just yesterday. It was a moment of mixed emotions. On one hand, split families would be able to get back together again!!! And travel would be free, at last!!! Remember "West of the Wall" sung by Toni Fisher? I really loved that song.

On the other hand, all the nastiness of the west would be visited on a quite sheltered society - unemployment, drugs, violence.

I wonder what the East Germans themselves felt, after all the celebrations were over. My feeling is that although they would never ever EVER allow the wall to go up again, their lives are still a mixed blessing.

Don't forget the shocking execution of Charles I. What a time that was!

There have been many interviews during the past few days, and not a few former East Germans think life was better before the wall came down.
