Do you respond to blog comments?

Does it make your blog more engaging by responding to each comment?

If someone insults you, do you respond with something funny?

Yes I do.. It seems to personalize my blog. I always love it when someone responds to my posts on their blog too.

It is awesome that someone takes the time out of there busy schedules and responds.

Yes, I do.

People come to your 'house' and hand 'home baked cookies' to you. You can't just take those cookies without saying thank you (the least) to show your appreciation.

You ignore them and they will (likely) stop visiting your 'house'.

Yep, I do- it keeps the dialog going. I haven't had a lot of experience with people being insulting. I've had about two instances where someone probably wasn't as tactful as would have been nice-- but yes, I did try to make the situation lighter.

That said, if someone was just outright name-calling and not raising any sort of point, then I would delete their comment in the same way I would Spam.

as a rule i do.
if someone takes the time/makes the effort to comment (good or bad), it's the least i can do.
having said that, if the comment is vulgar or meanspirited or name calling, i delete it as fast i as can and then block the ip address from accessing the site (had to do that twice for a couple of apparent homophobes).

Yes, I respond to comments if it's necessary...
I think it's good to communicate with your readers..:)
But I always make it a point to visit their blogs back & leave my comment on theirs.. That's for sure unless I can't of course..

yes, i obviously respond to the comments that i get. it gives a good feeling that someone has actually taken out time to comment on your blog-post.

I only respond if there is something to respond to...so if someone has said something I disagree with, or asked a question, or just had a big fat rant about what I wrote then I will respond...otherwise I don't.

I didn't at first but then i realized this person is taking time out of their day to respond to my site. And they're creating traffic for me, they'll tend to return if I engage them personally on the comment they left.

I generally do respond, but sometimes I don't always have the time.

If someone insults me, I may respond with something witty. But if I determine the one doing the insulting to be just plain hateful and over-the-top (there are a lot of sick, cowardly people out there unfortunately), then I'll delete the comment altogether.

Negative criticism, if it's well thought-out, is fine though.

Yes, I do--I think this is key to building a community around your blog.

Only 2 people insulted me and I ignored them (I have comment moderation enabled on my blog because I talk about controversial issues).

Always. Rule #2 on my blog - every comment gets a reply. I think it's really important because there are so many blogs out there ... it's nice that someone has taken the time to read and then comment on yours.

However, if the comment is SPAM - that's a whole different bird house.

Hi everyone

I always respond to comments that have been left on my blogs, not that I get that many ;-) I might not respond straightaway, it might be in a day or two's time.

I haven't had any bad ones yet, so I don't know what I would do if someone wrote something mean or distasteful , probably delete it

Someone left me a comment on one of my posts the other day, I didn't quite get what it meant LOL

Most times I will go and respond back on their blogs as well, if they have posts that I can relate to, or if I have something nice to say about their blog
