Hello! So what's your social bookmarking strategy? Do you bookmark your own posts to kick-start traffic? Do you let your audience take care of bookmarking? Which bookmarking website have you found most useful (stumbleupon, digg, delicious, furl, etc.)?

I just made a post about why bloggers shouldn't automate social bookmarking, and I'd love to hear your opinions!

Wow where to start with this.

    1) If you don't have an audience or a social circle how do you expect your content to get submitted to a social bookmarking site? You have to self submit early on and within reason.

    2) Different social networking sites have different community rules and cultures. Some are fine with self submitting, some you wouldn't even know if someone self submits, and others you will get destroyed on. You need to know the culture before you dive in, like anything else with social media.

    3) If you only self submit your own content you are an idiot. I self submit my content on some sites but also I submit probably 10-15 other articles a day from various sources. If all you do is use these sites to submit only your content then you are making a huge mistake.

    4) Don't self submit on stumble...

    5) Automating it is fine if you are also automating the posting of other submissions throughout the day. Again it is about mixing it up. You will never be a power user on 40 sites though if you don't participate. You should really pick a handful and constantly use them. Then mix in other sites that are in your niche.

    6) You need to build a social media circle. Flat out that is how all the top diggers do it. Am IM, e-mail, or group list where you can have people work with you on voting. These friends can help turn you and your social media profiles into a powerhouse.

    7) Also certain sites are worth submitting to just for links... Those you can spam the hell out of because while you might not get traffic getting the link is more important. It helps with SERPS and can provide more traffic after the fact from search engines.

Great comment! I definitely agree about building a social media circle, but with a full-time non-blogging job it's so hard to put time into anything besides actually writing posts.

My social bookmarking strategy started with bookmarking my articles and submitting them to social networks (digg, blogcatalog, delicious, furl mixx, etc..) but that was at the beginning.

Now I think more open about it, so I have my own community mylifethinking.com/social/ that I use to promote not just my blogs and my articles but also my active friends as I featured one blog every week to git the most hits from My Life Thinking community, it works for me just fine.

I have added this comment to your blog as well! Thanks for the very informal post of yours.

    Good luck!

I tend to use controversial issues to jumpstart the traffic to my HFL site.

Before any of your social media optimization is going to work, you HAVE TO build a network of people. Otherwise your content will come and go and be forgotten about quickly.
