    Impressive. ORGANic, I assume?
  2. cindygeenotes
Double message. Hands got all shakey there on the keyboard for a second.
    1. tcinvestor
Yes. Absolutely. The plant was on the verge of death after getting attacked by a chipmunk earlier in the season but came back strong and gave me this.
    2. tcinvestor
A little excited over the size of that cuke I presume
    3. crazyTsu
A Chipmunk on ur cucumber? Terrible to imagine..
    4. tcinvestor
Those little dudes can do some damage. Fast too.
    5. crazyTsu
      What about the nuts?
    6. tcinvestor
The nuts are safe up in the bird feeder where the squirrel eventually digs em out.

o_0 wow! some chile, some salt and lime juice, yum!
    1. tcinvestor
Yea. When it is time to slice & dice it.
    2. joedunphy
Meh. The chile and lime juice thing doesn't sound bad (though I'd much prefer tomatoes, fresh dill, garlic and olive oil), but I'd pass on eating a foot long cucumber. Experience tells me that the big ones will tend to be dry and bitter. Cucumbers are at their best when young and small.

I know of a farmer who, probably in a week or so, will start bringing in these very small ones that can be eaten, peel and all.
    3. tcinvestor
Sounds good. Yea, Joe. This one just hide quietly on the side of a wood pile. Forgot about the plant & just checked it to see & found this whopper. The only one left except for a few scraggly ones.
  4. Sam1982
I see that it's an uncut cucumber too

*and there goes that line of good taste*
    1. tcinvestor
LOL...I was sitting patiently just waiting for the first foray into the abyss and here comes Sam to lead the charge.
    2. Sam1982
      *bows*
  5. liggybee
That's a hard one to find!
    1. tcinvestor
LOL what are trying to say Liggy? ;-)
  6. amybyrd21
I am going to be nice. That is bigger than what we grew this year. My chickens love them too so they are gone already
    1. cindygeenotes
Your chickens sound like garden terrorists. First they eat your fishy tomatoes, then your cukes....they are ruling the roost, as they say.
    2. tcinvestor
The rest are nothing near this one. I had thought that plant was a gonner over a month ago but it came back & kept growing. I went out to just look around and this was the only one on the plant that was actually growing. I drained all the energy of the plant. Maybe now the others will have a chance to gain a little size.
    3. Sam1982
I say eat them - they'll come with their own salad
    4. tcinvestor
Sounds like killer chickens to me.
    5. amybyrd21
yep I have close to 100 of them and they are free range and rule the yard and the 100 acers around the house
    6. tcinvestor
Dang. That's a lot of chickens. Do you sell the eggs at farm markets?
  7. HollytheHousewife
that's gonna make one good pickle
    1. tcinvestor
Your welcome to it if you like.
  8. trailofpen
Yeah, I had one that size this year hidden in the back of one of my plants. I couldn't believe I didn't see it knowing how large it had gotten. Those plants are like factories that pump out veggies non-stop. After a while you get sick of eating the stuff.
    1. tcinvestor
That's exactly what happened with this one. I didn't think anything was there then looked up on top of the wood pile it climbed on and there it was. You should give the extra away to a food pantry or something.
    2. Sam1982
I have the same problem with fejoas - we give them away by the bucket load, and the ones our tree produces are the size of tennis balls. After eating them, juicing them and making them into pies and crumbles Im completely sick of them and they're normally just left as bird feed by the end of the season.
    3. trailofpen
Yeah, I thought about that, but then I had an aphid infestation that took care of that problem. It was like a war between me and the little pests, and in the end, the aphids won the war!
    4. tcinvestor
      @sam what is a fejoas?
@Top - yea, I had a fungus first then dang rodents. Some plants survived though.
    5. HollytheHousewife
I was wonderin the same thing
    6. Sam1982

They're just as much an icon here as the kiwifruit, much easier to grow though. They're eaten in the same way as you would a kiwi or a passionfruit or tamarillo.

They have a unique sour sort of taste with a gritty sort of texture. Theres no denying the flavor though, once you know the taste you'll be able to recognize it in any food. The flavor is pretty dominant when adding it to anything.
    7. tcinvestor
@ Sam. Excellent. Never heard of it but would love to give it a try. Grow on a large tree or bush? I'll investigate it. I particularly dig the 4 leaf clover design in the center. Looks a bit like the St. John's cross pendant on my necklace.
    8. Sam1982
They grow on a tree, and normally start fruiting around autumn.

      More info for you here

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fejoa

If only border security would let me send you some, I'd be happy to get rid of them haha
    9. tcinvestor
Hey Sam! My wife digs the fejoas with the 4 leaf clover in the middle.
  9. timethief
I never let mine (the ones I know about - not renegade volunteers) get that big because they don't taste as good to me. They seem to get more bitter. Have you eaten it yet?
    1. tcinvestor
No. This was one that came from a plant I thought was done & a gonner a while back but came back to life & left me this prize.
    2. Sam1982
covering in salt and then rinsing normally gets rid of the bitterness
    3. tcinvestor
We are gonna dig into it tonight. I'll keep the salt handy just in case.
  10. footiam
I would like to eat it too!
  11. tcinvestor
We will slice it up this week. To bad I can't send it through the internet to BC.
  12. lotusb
    HOLY FART NUGGETS!!!!

    That thing is HUGE!!!
    1. tcinvestor
LOL...You must like it, look, it made your hair stand straight up & out. BTW- I had hair like that when I was a young teen. I used to hate getting my hair cut. Not anymore. Now I don't like it when it gets even the least big long.
    2. lotusb
My avi is a famous photograph featuring an unknown model...I dont have an afro (anymore) when I did it was curly and huge, now it's straight.

  13. melindaville
Woo HOOOOOOOOO, TC! You the man!
    1. tcinvestor
Hey Melinda. Welcome back. You lika da big fat cuke do ya? How was the trip.
  14. tcinvestor
In case anybody wants to know. We cut that bad boy up tonight and it was mighty tasty. Just ask my wife. Really, crisp, tender, juicy and not bitter..BAM!!....really good.
  15. idealpinkrose
yes, that was huge! I've got some cucumbers from a friend and they're the smallest cucumbers that I've ever seen but they are sweet and more delicious. hehe...
    1. tcinvestor
We had more of this thing last night. Surprisingly it tastes great. There are some little ones almost ready to be picked.
  16. HollytheHousewife
    wow,still a big ole pickle
    1. tcinvestor
It isn't so big anymore. More than half gone now.
    2. tcinvestor
Mr. Big Pickle is all gone now.
    1. tcinvestor
Figured I would get a few more laughs out of this one. We will see how big we get next year.
