I used to be terrified of getting cancer as a teenager. I remember laying in bed at night and worrying myself sick that there might be something wrong with my health...what if I get cancer...?

I no longer worry so much about getting cancer, because after studying all the different cancers in medical school I realized that the majority of cancers are highly preventable. Actually 85% of cancer is preventable!

My colleague Dr. Jake Psenka wrote a great post on the "Top Five Foods to Eat to Prevent Cancer"

kitchentablemedicine.com/top-five-foods-for-preventing-cancer/

So my question is, does anyone else worry about getting cancer or any other chronic disease? Or do you feel like your health is mainly controlled by your own decisions?

No. I was blessed with not getting any vaccinations or being exposed to much hydrogenated fats. I feel safe.
    1. DocNicole
I am glad you feel safe Daniel

I long for the good ol' days when you didn't live long enough to worry about that.

Yah the 28 club wasn't just for rockstars....
  3. PotatoChef
A uncomfortable question.... I worry about it because I smoke 2-3 packs of cigarettes for over 20 years. I quit...but still I worry.
  4. DocNicole
Well the good news is that the longer you have quit the more your lungs will resemble that of a non-smoker! I used to smoke a lot too. I am quite the naturopathic make over if I do say so myself!!!

Doesn't it feel good to be able to breathe and work out!! I love it.
  5. ender
nope. had it, beat it back, got it back, got rid of it. meh, cancer is my beeatch.
    1. DocNicole
Nice! Way to whoop it and show it who is the boss!
    2. ender
yeah, well, Hodgkins is cancer lite.

and no one in my family has had cancer except me. so it wasn't really something i ever much thought about, either.
    3. RTBjr73
      Ender,

Cancer is cancer. You beat it, therefore you are a hero of mine.
  6. kdawg68
Sure, to an extent. I smoke (though not as much as I was earlier), and that worries me. I think most of it comes from the memory of watching my uncle die from what I was told was cancer back in 1984 (I was 6). Later in life I learned it was AIDS.
    1. DocNicole
So many people are terrified of AIDS but they don't realize they are more likely to contract Hepatitis B or C from explicit activities.

Dr. Nicole...here to terrify the masses! LOL
  7. Anniepooh
Well, after dad died of pancreatic cancer and his sister died of lung cancer and his cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer and his other brother was diagnosed with melanoma and liver cancer and his uncle just died of colon cancer - uh, yeah - I worry.

Dad changed his diet and went the Hoxsey route and lived for a year, but in the end, it still got him.
    1. DocNicole
Wow I am so sorry for your loss! And for all the cancer running in your family as well. Cancer is definitely multi-factorial between diet, lifestyle, genetics and what not.

Hoxsey is great, I know though if I got diagnosed with something as terminal as pancreatic or lung cancer that unless I was really young still, I probably would just pack up and move to Hawaii and start drinking cocktails and surfing. might not opt for naturopathic or conventional treatments. Sometimes the treatments for cancer are actually harder on people than the actual cancer.

A year is a long time for pancreatic cancer. I believe the statistic is 90% die in 3-6 months.

Again, so sorry for your loss :C
    2. kdawg68
Pancreatic cancer terrifies me. It takes people from us so quickly. I've watched several people close to me die from that. I'm very sorry for your loss.
    3. Anniepooh
Dad was a chiropractor, so for him to go natural made sense. He started (and ended) with a 5 cm tumor, so, really-he did well. He liked getting to Cali and Mexico a lot anyway
    4. DocNicole
well dear I hate to be the buzz kill but if you are terrified by pancreatic cancer then you really should quit smoking. Smoking and drinking are the two main causes that we have within our control.

If you choose to quit I will hold your hand and walk you through my smoking cessation program.
    5. kdawg68
I know - you're 100% right. I've been meaning to. Most of my attempts have been half-assed though, to be honest. I have cut back drastically. I'm down to maybe 2 per day. I need to just take the jump to 0.

AnniePooh - please get the BRCA test done

In some ways... yeah. My Aunt has multiple myeloma and my grandma had cervical cancer. One doctor said that cancer is brought about by 50% genetic reasons and 50% environmental.
    1. DocNicole
We are actually learning that it is less genetic than we used to think. Which is great news. Some cancers have a propensity for being more genetic like ovarian cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer for instance. Others are more likely attributed to environmental factors.

Cervical cancer is not something we really need to worry about so much anymore because of the tests we have to screen it so as long as women go in for their annual paps chances are we will catch the slow growing cancer in time.
  9. globalgirl
    I don't like to worry.

    Really.

    So I don't.

I guess this one of the areas where my faith is manifest.
  10. eagerblogger
    Thanks for that info.

Yes - I watched my Mom die from cancer last August.
No - I refuse to waste my life worrying about anything.

Not sure that I'm making any sense but I rarely do when I tell the truth.
    1. kdawg68
shit bro - sorry to hear about your mom. I like your attitude though. Makes perfect sense to me.
    2. ekim941
Prolly coz we're hittin of the same bong.
    3. globalgirl
Ekim, I am sorry to hear about your Mom...I empathize your ordeal of having a Mom fight cancer, though my Mom has overcome it. My Mom recently survived lung & brain cancer this past year... many surgeries, chemo and radiation. Now she is cancer free.

Kevin, welcome back. I knew you'd return. Addicts always do.
    4. ekim941
GG, I'm not totally convinced that it made it easier but my Mom suffered from cancer for over 2 years.
I think the whole family had a long time to say goodbye and let it sink in.
I'm glad your Mom is doing better. It gives you a totally different perspective on a lot of things, doesn't it?
    5. RTBjr73
I think you make complete sense.

      Good for you!!!

Food for thought, am I on track by thinking your Mom taught you to think positively?

    Great info doc!
Would really take note of it

I also list some things you should do to prevent cancer.

Hey, Doc, you should know, a high alkaline diet beats cancer every time. Why worry about it?
    1. RTBjr73
Wonderful, I'll start throwing double AA's into my salad for now on...
  14. gerri50
Yup, I do. My best friend died of cancer last year. He had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

    He was only 26.

    @DovNicole
I survived cancer and life is too short for me to worry about possibly getting it again.
  16. chrissymarie321
I lost my brother 4 years ago this month to a very rare form, he was 38.
However, I don't think about myself. I just think about making sure the people around me that I love and care for know that I love them. I know that no-one is around for ever and I try to make sure that I do give that hug, that kind word. I try very hard not to take anyone for granted - because one day they may not be there. There is no doubt that losing him has changed me and my attitude to life.
  17. crkian
If i was worried I wouldnt smoke, wouldnt skip breakfast etc
  18. IrvCallaghan
they thing is not to worry about it, but take an active stand against it.You here of people being diagnosed with cancer and only have a short time to live. HAD THEY HAD A SIMPLE BLOOD TEST, they might have been able to detect it, earlier. People don't realize that they can check their blood work without a doctor. People care more about their cars than about themselves. You here people always saying "I HAVE TO CHANGE MY OIL" every three thousand miles or three months. "WHAT ABOUT THEIR (OIL) THE BLOOD"
A CBC can detect abnormalities. I have owned Health by Screening for 18yrs.
People can go to our website ineedbloodwork.com and order a blood test and receive your own results and get piece of mind.
  19. RTBjr73
I worry about my wife. She has lost a few family members, all of cancer, in the past five years.
  20. myriadlife
If cancer runs in peoples' families I can understand them worrying but if it doesn't there's no point. Actually there's no point in worrying about anything. My Dad had Alzheimers (which is even more prevalent than cancer), my bro and sis worry about getting it too but what's the point? There's nothing to help cure or delay that yet.

Doc Nicole - what happened in your life to make your teenage years so worrisome?

Me- I worry about it coming back. It's only been a year.
  24. inbusiness
If you worry about things like this, in my opinion you are more likely to get it - its a bit like saying "don't think about the colur red", then all you think about is that colour, instead if you say "Think about the colour blue" you will think about that colour instead of red - make sense so far?

I did a hypnotherapy course and learnt something quite amazing about cancer which has changed my thinking on this one and which is whay I say the above - remember your subconcious brain controls your whole body, from your heart beat, to your breathing, to your digestion etc, so don't give it the wrong instructions, by thinking about "cancer" the whole time, as it just might mis-construe the instruction!
    1. busylizzy
I've read in cancer society literature that people with positive, upbeat attitudes have the same survival rates as those who are depressed and negative. I'm a positive person and don't dwell on the subject but every once in awhile something triggers me into a downward spiral - like the time the arts and crafts store had a huge display of pink ribbon grave markers up front by the cash registers. I did not appreciate it.
    2. inbusiness
Or like when people post questions related to dementia! LOL
    3. busylizzy
      Ha, ha, hardy, har, har!

So when are you going to let me know if I'm demented or not?
  25. ranist22
No. I'm more worried about diabetes.
  26. fearless21
Get a mammogram...mine saved my life 2 years ago!
  27. KiefersCorner
No, i don’t worry about getting any disease or sick.

If you eat a proper diet, exercise, and have the proper mindset you will live a long and healthy life providing you don’t play in traffic LOL.

Most all diseases are man made and brought on by poor choices people make.

You simply have a choice about your future health.

Most people just decide to ignore it!
    1. fearless21
      @ Kiefers
Good luck with that philosophy, however, I had a great diet am in good shape, a runner, no smoking, no bad habits and still I was diagnosed with the big C at age 37.

I totally don't fit the stereotype of one who would get cancer.

The key is to be vigilant about your health, so if you do have a predisposition to something like cancer....you catch it as early as possible.
  28. KiefersCorner
Sorry, i forgot to add that you must be aware of the products you use in your everyday life.

Especially women since most beauty products contain cancer-causing chemicals know as carcinogens.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body, you must be aware of what you use on it.

Also environmental factors play a major part like your household and workplace pollution and environment around you home.
