Does anybody blog just to blog anymore?

I started my first blog as a way to chronicle things for my kids. Rather than writing it down in a paper journal, I wanted it to be more interactive. In other words, I started my blog as an online journal.
I didn't want to do it for money or fame etc. The award I won and the other nominations I've had were a great plus, and I have adsense, amazon and cafe press hooked up now. I do it FOR those reasons, though.
I would blog even if nobody else read it.

I'm new to blogging, and started my blog to (a) blow off steam, (b) ramble on about legal topics or political issues, and (c) to explore legal or political concepts. My blog is mainly a journal for me too; if I want to initiate a discussion, I'll cross-post a Diary on DailyKos. And, there is something satisfying in having a small voice, even if only a few people hear it.

Pretty much the same with me. Just letting off some steam, and usually there is a few people to share the steam with...so I email them. If it virals all the best, If it doesn't it doesn't bother me
Google Ad sense is fine as they usually feature relevant stuff which actually enhance the content. Why not as it is quite effortless and I could make a couple of bucks it case the posts virals. Unfortunately I have got ads like " get to know chinese girls" on my site that talks about China. When this happens I just remove the Ads, its quite easy to do that too.

Same here, I don't do it for money. It's just things I'd like to share / put out there, and if somebody reads it and gets something out of it (even if it's just to waste time at work or some form of entertainment), then I'm happy. Either way, I started just to keep friends updated on what I'm up to and also to keep myself busy doing something I enjoy.
I have discovered money making advertisements though, so if I make a little money here and there it'd be great, but it's not the reason I have a site in the first place. I doubt I'll ever make loads of money off of my site, but if I make enough to get an original orange dream machine with energy boost at Jamba Juice - SWEET!

I blog because I love to write. The hardest thing for me is: I keep thinking of more and more to blog about! I go on BlogCatalog, see your blogs, and that just makes me want to write more.
So, no, I don't do it for money (I would be broke) and I don't do it for fame (I keep myself mostly anonymous). I do it because I enjoy it.
And, sappy though it sounds, I do it because I enjoy meeting other bloggers, too.
Ugh. That *does* sound sappy.
Okay, I'm lying. I'm in it for the big bucks, baby! Pardon me while I crush you all into dust beneath the soles of my diamond-studded sandals... -
I harness any laughter generated by my blog and convert it into electricity, which I then use to power a large refrigerator in which I keep a selection of chilled beverages. That is what I use my blog for.

I'm like Viv, I blog because I love writing. Having a readership is a plus. And having comments just helps for feedback and confirms my direction for my writing. I have a couple of business blogs designed to help inform people. I have a couple of blogs that are bible studies. I have a family blog, a photo blog, a garden blog and there are others. I did say I like to write and there's always heaps of stuff I want to write about!

Couldn't agree more, biker blogger.
Ask yourself if you had 20 million dollars stashed away, would you still blog? If your answer is "yes", then you know you're not blogging for money. I think it's the excitement of clicking the Publish button and volia! it's there for the whole world to read!
And if the money comes in, that's the perks and I might not complain either!
Blogging without having anyone to read it like that proverbial rose in the jungle, which blooms to full glory and withers away without ever being appreciated by anyone.
But then again, people do blog for reasons other than getting a readership--the daily diary, get a fresh perspective on matters which always comes while writing, a means of correspondence with friends (not Web readers), let someone know you care enough about him/her to make notes about him that they can read, etc.
That said, I'd imagine blogging is indeed a very personal preference.

Yup, I've been published in a couple of minor writing journals and had an article in "Romantic Homes" magazine, but there just aren't the opportunities for print publication that there once were. Many publishers just have their in-house staff and that's it- there's no paying outside folks to contribute, no chance for new voices to get any space.
So I think with the Web, we all have a really exciting opportunity to reach people-- on our own terms. It might take a while, but the progress is fun to watch, too...
Now if only I could get my blog to help me save on my electric bills like Lord Likely. Guess I'll have to hire a technical consultant for that. :-)

I don't blog for money but if I do sell a piece of my artwork, fine. I blog because I like to share the journey of being an artist with other art-minded people and I sometimes talk about personal things in my daily life. I mainly started it for family and friends to keep track of what I was up to but I have met lots of new people through by blog also and that's been great!

I've been writing a paper journal for more than 30 years and blogging seemed to be a good extension of that. For me it is about recording my life and those around me. As someone who has dabbled in genealogy I hope that this becomes a bit of a legacy for my children and their children to come. I actually keep a back up of the stuff I write in a word document.

I started blogging just as a way to find out if anyone was remotely interested in the kind of stuff I wanted to write. 87 chapters later, I've got a small, but perfectly formed readership who encourage me to continue in the grim task of helping Harry McFry solve the Mystery of the Missing Family.
In the process, I've discovered the blogosphere, created one or two other blogs and 'met' some lovely, lovely people (some of who I see have already contributed to this discussion) along the way.
The world is a smaller place thanks to blogging.'
Kind Regards

I blog to get it out of my head. I used to be a hand-written journal writer, but it always ended up being too free-thought style. I like the ability to structure and edit my writing in a blog. I could just type up a journal and keep it on my computer, I suppose. I do think that somewhere deep down, I hope the world will find my writing and think I am amazing. I guess its just another one of those human needs for affirmation.
I always thought I would be a writer. In 4th grade, that was my dream. Now I work a corporate day job where the only writing is emailing and writing processes. Blogging is how I get to be a writer for now. -
Money? MONEY??? You mean it's possible to make MONEY doing this? Holy criminy! Here I was just writing to myself because no one else around here listens to me and the computer can't get away! Note to self: Prowl around this joint and find out how one goes about bringing home some bacon by writing stooopid junk to myself on this here computer thingie! YIPPEEE!!!!!!

I have no desire to be paid for my blogging. I've been writing creatively from the age of eight. So I would have no qualms strictly writing for myself or a small audience. I write about a multitude of things. Some stuff is humorous. Others are serious. Some times I just wish to ramble, be silly or creative.
It's all dependent on what is going on in "my" word or the one around me that "dictates" where I wish to go on my blogging adverture for the day.
I am here to MOSTLY write for myself, but if others find something of interest, I'll gladly have them along for the ride
Friends are always a welcome part of my life. Blogging is no exception! -
It all depends on the purpose of your blog. If you are writing informative, entertaining,or opinionated blogs there would be no point to put it on the web if noone is going to read it! For purposes of keeping a digital journal, you must care whether or not someone reads it, or else you would probably just write it in Microsoft Word and then save it to My Documents.

I'm blogging because...I'm breathing - that may sound poetically, but that's the truth in a literal sense of a word. I'm workless and blogging guards me from just looking through the window. Plus I'm blogging in a language that I didnt hear on my daily walk and that takes me into some other realm out of itself.
Wow, it would be fine to get some money, but that's not my goal for blogging, and I have earned totally nothing through my writtings. I just share my pictures with the world and welcome the light. -
Not to conflict with anyone, but if you blog even if no one else reads it then why not keep a computer journal. Also why use adsense if money is not a concern.

To glorify heavy metal and horror films.
That is to say, for fun.
I learnt a bit about how search engines work in the process, which couldn't hurt in the long run.

It depends upon how you describe your imagination in the Digital World by the means as Blogs...and do the same with my www.seocontest2008india.com site :). It only differs from person to person

I have personal blogs that are just for sharing with friends and to be creative. (Although I'm neglecting them right now.) I'd feel weird sharing the daily details of my own life with the whole world though. Those are friends-only blogs. I post there when I get the urge, and it doesn't really matter if I get feedback.
Your question reminds me of the beach. Sometimes I build sand castles, and I enjoy doing so, but it feels like a sort of victory when someone stops to look! I don't care if they remember me, but I want someone to see it.
So I'm not looking for money or fame exactly, but I'm blogging for a little more than blogging's sake... I need the satisfaction of feeling that I'm doing a good job, and someone appreciates it.
I never really blogged just for me. If I'm writing just for me, I don't post it. O.o -
As I've said elsewhere, I hate blogs that make money from talking about making money... a hatred that really applies to anything profitable on the internet.

I starting my blog on a whim and didn't expect to keep up with it for more than a month or two, but it became such an enjoyable experience, and it gives me a place to keep my ideas and interests all in one place. I have a handful of loyal readers, and my nice little group is a delight.
It's also a great incentive for the occasional writing exercise as time allows. -
I use my blog as a study tool along with personal writing. For me it helps greatly to write my study notes out. It's cool if I can provide online content at the same time. It's all about having fun. If you do it for the money or fame and it's fun...then props to you. At least you're having a good time doing it. I have a small blog networks that's fun to run, fun to make money with, and my hobby.
-
Considering that I don't get that many hits I'm certainly not doing it for money. :-) I need expressive and creative outlets and this works for me. I will admit that if no one is reading I wonder what's the point. I do do it because I like it... but it's still for others to enjoy even if it never becomes very popular.
-
I do it for myself, I've been lucky that some people drop by and make amusing comments ... then I visit their blogs and so on and so on. But it's just for fun.
I have adsense on my blog mostly to mock the google bot. If I do a post about toilets, next think you know the google bot is trying to sell my readers toilets and everything that has anything to do with them. The week I did a post about an auction for a fossilized penis bone from an extinct walrus was a LOT of fun. -

I'm in the middle of the road with my blogging. I wanted to draw attention to my work and things that I had for sale. I never really had a problem with that, since I go to other peoples blogs to seek out their "wares". I also went into just talking about what I liked, what I was doing, and things that I found to be cool. Really, no one even reads my blog outside of a few friends so it's turned into just letting them know what I'm up to. Anyone else that has an interest in what's there is a great welcome.
-
I only blog to blog ... mainly to keep my experiences with the technologies I get in contact with each day in an easy reference. And at times I'll rant about various stuff and post some non-technology stuff.
If somebody else reads it - perhaps find some of it useful or interesting or fun - then that's a bonus.
You'll however find absolutely no advertisements on my blog, and I seriously doubt I'll ever want them there.
You'll also not find large widget, shiny flash or blinking stuff, or anything of that.
I have a few links and I do not care much about link swapping at all. I link to sites/blogs I read a lot, regardless of whether they know I'm alive or not
I blog for the fun of blogging.
