No, it's way too difficult a language for me to even consider learning it.

Yes, I started studying 2 years ago and also spend 6 months studying intensively in Tokyo. I'm studying for the JLPT this December. Hiragana and Kanji are cool but for some reason, I just cannot get Katakana - I can only remember about 4 characters!

      Hi, Desorientee

I was born in Japan. I remember that my teacher said, "ツ is from up to down, シ is from bottom to up!" Although I was a first grader (or second, I don't remember), it was hard for me to memorize Katakana, too. Japanese students spend many years (like 10 years) to learn their letters including Kanji. I still don't know all Kanji letters. It is a life long project. so がんばってください!

I tried in school for about 6 months. My problem with it was simply its complexity. Three different scripts, so many words for numbers of different things. It was crazily complicated. But I did manage to pin down a bit of it. E.g.: Watashi wa Tom desu. Meaning "I am Tom", hopefully...

      Hi Iratedog,

If you think Japanese is too complicated, visit my blog "What a Japanese Wife Said" @ whatajapanesewifesaid.blogspot.com/
(By the way, I am a Japanese native speaker.) I introduce Japanese phrases which I said in my daily life. You can learn Japanese conversation. You don't have to know all grammar, just enjoy the experience of learning another language! That is more fun!

      Hi, Kyken!

Seems like Katakana is more difficult than Hiragana for many people! I guess it is because they look the same? I think the solution is to read more. You will get used to it.

I was born in Japan. I came to the United States at the age of 24. So my first language is Japanese. When I was taking "applied linguistics class" in my American college, I observed a Japanese class. That was my beginning to study Japanese. I mean people don't know their first language grammar consciously. I observed Japanese classes and helped American students more than 2 years. It was a great experience.

One day I noticed that the verb conjugation for non-native Japanese speakers is different from the grammar that Japanese native speakers learn. I wondered "WHY?" Why does the teaching method of verb conjugation have to be different from what native speakers learn? You know what, it does not have to be, although your Japanes teacher might not agree with me. It is different because your teacher believe that "it it too difficult for non-native speakers to learn Japanese verb conjugation." That's it. They don't believe you will understand all Japanese verb conjugation. But I think THAT IS WRONG! You can understand Japanese verb conjugations. So I did a research. I taught American students Japanese verb conjugations in both native speakers way and non-native speakers way, and asked them questions. You know the result? Most people said native speakers way is easier because it is more logical! I tutored 16 years old American girl with native speakers' way. She had no problem to understand it. Because I believe the Japanese verb conjugations should be taught in native speakers' way so much, I ended up with writing a book "Speak Like Native Speakers Japanese Verb Conjugation I." Probably this is the first English book which teaches Japanese verb conjugation in native speaker's way. It is available on Amazon.com.

English is easy to learn for someone. Since a lot of slang words are used, even if a foreigner spells all the words wrong, most people still know what he is talking about.
