If so what brand and what do you like or not like about it? If you were going to buy a new GPS for your car what brand would it most likely be?

In Europe, MIO and Navman etc are popular. But I have recently bought one from TAKARA and it is pretty good.

Make sure your GPS has maps for all the countries of your interest.

MP3 and MP4 are now a days a common feature of all new generation GPSs. Suggest select a GPS with these options (free)

Thanks, that's true most of the newer GPS units can play music through them too. That's a good topic for one of my future posts.

I have not heard of TAKARA GPS systems but I'll look them up now.

we were travelling home in a taxi last night. The driver had used a Tom Tom, the audio was set in Mandarin.

It is not as good as the Navman I think. Cus the audio and screen interface not clear. Maybe because it was in Mandarin.

Cool, well now at least the taxi drivers can't say they got lost.

I don't use GPS and actually want to get a unit ..

My brother-in-law swears by it in his vehicle, and my cousin uses it all the time to mark the good fishing spots out on the lakes and rivers.

I have a Garmin GPS. It is FANTASTIC. And it even has an English accent which sounds hilarious when trying to say the hispanic names in LA!!

I don't have a GPS unit, but I occasionally use the GPS on my Blackberry Curve. It's fine for my needs.

I had the beta to Mapquest Navigator on my Blackberry before Mapquest made it available for purchase and that worked great!
The talking turn by turn directions works for most smartphones with Windows and Blackberries Here's a link to one of the posts I made about that www.autonavigationgps.com/in-car-gps-navigation-in-the-palm-of-your-hand/

GPS saved me life a few times. Otherwise I would be stuck in the wild Australia

yes, and I find it particularly useful for finding the nearest rest stops, gas stations or places to eat when driving long distances. Very handy when driving at night in unfamiliar territory, especially if it is raining.
I had a garmin, but I like the tom tom I have now, very easy to use.

roentarre How's a compass work in Australia? Since it is closer to the south pole I always wondered that.

I have a Garmin 340 or 360 something...it's not flat like the next model up, but rather boxy(looks like a small TV set) This makes it somewhat a pain in the ass if you wanted to use it while hiking or something. However, it has been a life saver. It's very accurate and has lots of options.

I would use Garmin, as i trust them more. And they make navigational equipment for aircraft.

I don't have one for my car, but I use the Garmin Forerunner 305 when running or on a long bike ride - and I LOVE it! another-mile.blogspot.com/2008/03/sweet-gadgetry.html

MoreMiles, I read your post. I always though the smaller gps units like your watch told you either where you were or where you are going. I never realized they told you where you went and kept a record of that including mileage and elevations. Great post.

I use one and it saves me from great frustration at times.

I just spent four months working in the Portland, Or/Vancouver, Wa area. I can't imagine my time there without it, it would have been a mightmare since I was not at all familiar with the area.

One draw back was, because of it I was lazy and made no effort to learn my way around.

    I use a Garmin.

I just read about a climber lost for 5 days on Mt. Adam in Washington. Needless to say I'm sure he did not have a GPS with him.

Even if he had, the limiting factor is battery life. Batteries normally exhaust after couple of hours.

I use a government issues one, if we didn't we'd get lost over here.

What brand GPS units does the Army use? Handhelds I'm assuming right?
