I just signed up for Twitter the other day and am already finding it nearly pointless because I don't know of anyone else who uses Twitter. Unlike Facebook and some of the other social media websites out there, it seems like you already have to know someone using Twitter to even get a dialogue started. Anyone know how I can jumpstart my Twitter account with some good dialogue?

What do you mean by this? I'm not sure how to add people to my niche.

It all depends on what you want to use twitter for?

You have your first follower now anyways, as I love cartoon blogs

Cool! I just saw that. I'll go check out what you wrote...

crpitt, thanks for helping me out, I really appreciate it. At the risk of seeming like a nincompoop, can you please tell me how to respond to your twitter entry to me? The one where you said "I don't know about a holler but how about a hello"? It didn't show up on my twitter page; I only saw it when I went to your twitter page. I went to the twitter FAQ page and am having no luck. I'm confused!

Your @crpitt reply worked fine for me
    4. crpitt
Only my replies are seen here twitter.com/crpitt.

Your replies to me are seen on the twitter.com/home, where you can also press the replies button found underneath the big grey 'update' button.

Thanks so much for walking me through this. I find the instructions on the Twitter site confusing. I look forward to speaking with you more on Twitter (and checking in on your blog)!

Heck I am no expert on it either, I just stumble my way through these things

      Thanks again.

Isn't twitter stalking but in reverse? LOL. I dunno, I don't think people care what I'm doing every minute of the day.
    1. flamingspinach
Good point. It seems like a decent way to keep up with people, if you know a good amount of people who already use it. Seems like a chicken or egg situation.

Twitter is an extremely popular social networking site within the open source community. It seems that quite a few bloggers like it, also. I've been there for a couple of months, but am really just becoming comfortable there.

We are on it, and find it is pretty cool and can be useful for catching up with people, or just finding out what somebody is up to.
    1. flamingspinach
I see how you leave a message, but how do you respond to messages other people leave for you? Someone left a response to me on her twitter page but it didn't show up on my twitter page -- do I have to somehow give her permission to leave messages on my page? I already added her as someone I'm following so...
    2. thenibblers
Hey flame if you add them as a friend, their "twits" should appear on your page. If they are a fan, but you do not add them their "twits" do not appear.

      Hope that helps.

Yes, that's helpful. I've been twittering (twitting??) with someone and I think I'm getting the hang of it. Thanks!

I have a twitter account but I rarely use it at all. Following me would be like watching nothingness happening -- lol. I simply don't have the time to use all the many tools that are available to promote my blogs.

P.S. Do you see a little trashcan and a little arrow. Click the arrow to reply.

Awesome, timethief. Thanks for your suggestion, very helpful.

Your use of twitter will depend on what your goal is. Do you want to network? Find old friends? Keep in touch with family? Find business partners?

Look at the search box. Type in cartoon drawing and see what other twitter peeps and posts show up... take a look at how they are using twitter if you intend to use it for business and networking. I also did a search on cartoon artist ... check them out

You can also use twitterfeed to have your blog posts link into your tweets

Having been using Twitter more consistently now, during the past month, I am realizing it's much more than just talking about yourself and letting others know what you are doing at the moment.

It's about connecting with many different people from around the world who have similar likes and dislikes. It's about sharing interesting, up to date information regarding news stories, discoveries, business tips, blogging advice, etc.

There has been an explosion of activity lately since Guy Kawasaki and Shaq and many other famous people are now using Twitter. I look foward to connecting with you there.

      Have a great day!

At first I was anti-Twitter because I and all my friends use Facebook's status, so I thought it was pointless that the entire purpose of Twitter was that one function. But now that I've started seriously blogging, I use it all the time to make connections. I'm twitter.com/dianafreedman
