Does fantasy, sci-fi, or escape fiction (or TV) interest increase in difficult times?

I am seeing so many TV programs and books that seem to be inundating our TVs and bookstores of late. Is there this the reason for it, or do you have another theory?

    I do think so. People want to think or see something beautiful than our present condition.And most of the time Sci-fi can be allegorical as shown in the movie District 9.

      I haven't seen the movie yet - but it sounds fantastic!

      I've also noticed the new programs that focus on the fantasy/sci-fi/out of this world places and stories are taking over the TV.

    Exactly. So much for reality show . I guess people get bored by looking at lives that are messy that in return adds up to their own-say a star who is proud to say on national TV that she doesn't know what a casserole means!
