If it doesn't I've got a webcam for you: Small Town America: Minnesota ( smalltownamericaminnesota.blogspot.com/2008/12/white-christmas-here-we-come... ).

Now that I've plugged my blog, the question:

Does it snow where you live?

If it does, is it a rare event, or something you deal with every winter?

I live in Michigan and snow is commonplace here every winter. I like having all four seasons and in general I like the snow, except for when I have to drive in it lol...
    1. Norski
      Spoken like a true Michegonian.

I'm with you: in general, I prefer to look at snow, rather than drive on it or shovel it.
  2. Anok
Yup, living in New England means snow, rain, ice, sleet, slush, and lots and lots of sand/salt on the streets

Of course, the weather does change every five minutes or so
    1. Norski
      Sounds like Minnesota.

It's rather convenient: not having to travel to experience different climates.
  3. xmarks
I'm in RI, so we get a lot of snow and other crappy weather. I like to be able to drive to see snow and then to drive away from snow.
    1. Norski
      Well said.
  4. fatihahh
I'm from Singapore & i soo wish i'm from somewhere else -- where snow falls.
The only seasons we have here are just the everlasting summer & occasional monsoon.
    Is snow fun?
    1. Norski
      Fun?

      Yes! For example:
      • Making and playing with
        • Snowmen
        • Snow forts
        • Snowballs
      • Winter sports, like
        • Skiing
          • Downhill
          • Cross-country
        • Hiking in snowshoes
        • Making snow sculptures (a sort of semi-serious, grown-up, way of making snowmen)
        • Sitting inside, wearing a warm sweater and drinking something hot, looking through a window at the sparkling snow
      No! For example:
      • Shoveling the driveway
      • Driving on compacted snow and ice
        • When the car starts spinning, you've got trouble
      • Walking through drifts or deep snow
        • Great exercise, but inconvenient at best
All in all, I think the positives outweigh the negatives - and sunlight on fresh snow creates intense colored sparkles that are almost impossible to photograph.

I live in Ontario, Canada. We had about 6 inches or more overnight. Everyone is busy this morning clearing the snow away, to get out and about.
    1. LGramlich
Where in Ontario? I lived in Toronto & the Niagara Region.
    2. Norski
"Busy." Good way of putting it.
  6. myriadlife
Uh hum yes it does and I have the proof
www.abart-temperament.blogspot.com. It doesn't happen that often, I don't mind it on days I don't have to go out to work. I've had customers ask me why I wasn't at market when the snow was really deep! If I didn't have to negotiate the icy roads to get there am sure i would love to stand out in subzero temps. (not.)
    1. Norski
Oh, my: nice photos. Thanks for sharing.
  7. satijournal

It snowed last night but it looks like the sun is coming out, so hopefully it will melt from the sidewalk and I won't have to shovel.
    1. Norski
Solar snow removal: Nice, when it happens.
  8. ranist22
It snows sometimes around Paris, but the snow rarely stays, though I've seen it happen. Today it snowed heavily for a couple of hours but vanished fast enough.
    1. Norski
It was after learning about French climate - and that of other parts of Europe - that I realized why so much emphasis was sometimes put on snow.

      Thanks for your 'insider's' look.
  9. alexmcone
Naah, it rains out here and loads of it too.
    1. Norski
Bangalore: No, there wouldn't be much snow there.

Sounds a bit like Ireland, actually - although rather warmer.
  10. riverstyxxx
Not out here in southern california. It's kinda bitter today, but still good weather. Last night it was chilly, still good though.

However, I grew up in the mountains of Pennsylvania, always snowed out there. The only way to chase it was with cans of natural ice.
    1. Norski
      "Chilly" is a relative term.

One winter, when I lived in San Francisco, it was chilly - by my standards. So, I put on a cap and a windbreaker before walking to the bus stop.

On the way, I passed someone wearing a parka: one with a snorkel hood. He (I think it was a he - hard to tell under the parka, thick pants, and boots) had his hands in his pockets.

      And, the snorkel extended.
  11. frugalgrad
No. I have just moved from a snowy place to a no snow zone. Christmas here is definitively different. Santa probably have to wear short sleeve over here.
    1. Norski
Santa in a floral-print shirt and Bermuda shorts. There's a vision.
  12. Friday13
    No. It never does.
    1. Norski
Where's "here?" I glanced through your blog and home page and found engaging copy and quite good photos - and a reference to "windy city" and buses.

It snows in Chicago, so you must be in another windy city - one that has buses. That doesn't narrow the field all that much.

      Thanks for the comment, BTW.
    2. Friday13
I'm in Santo Domingo. Not in the U.S.

There's never a chance of snow here, in the Caribbean. Plenty of hurricanes and storms, but that season has passed (thankfully).
  13. LGramlich
It's rare where I live now (near New Orleans,) but I used to live in the "snow belt" near Buffalo, NY (which is why I now live near New Orleans!)
    1. Norski

You, and quite a few other people!
    2. LGramlich
Unfortunately it DID snow here today...OH THE HORROR!!!
  14. avecchioni
Yes, and the wind off the lake in Chicago can be merciless. But you get used to it.
    1. Norski
Indeed. I grew up in the Red River Valley of the North.

A joke had a visitor asking, "does it always blow this way here?" The answer was, "no, sometimes it blows the other way."
    2. legbamel
Since I live there now, my answer to your question is, "Not today. So far." That's the standard answer here, between October and April. Sometimes it applies in May, as well.
  15. Arcticulates
Yes it sure does snow. I live in Alaska... It is so beautiful!
    Photobucket
    1. Norski
      Beautiful, as you said.

      Very.
  16. Jeunelle
Yes Boston mean snow and I can't wait to see the chairs, bed springs, toilet bowl
and whatever else they use to protect their dug out parking spaces.

It sure doesn't do a thing for our property value when I look out my window
    to see toilet bowls everywhere.

I hate that the most and ice, which I have to be careful of not to fall and crack my head open.
I have seen some nasty spills where a man broke his leg on some ice.

Dr Atkins (the Atkins diet guru) died a few years ago, when he slipped and fell on some ice
and cracked his head open. If that didn't happen he probably would still be with us today.
    1. Norski
Toilet bowls to protect parking spaces: That's an aspect of Boston living I hadn't read about before. Makes sense, in practical if not aesthetic terms.
    2. Jeunelle
It's more predominant in a certain part of Boston.
It's kind of funny to take photos of the street this way.
  17. RecycleCindy
Yes it snows here and in fact its snowing right now here in NE Washington.
    1. Norski
And a beautiful part of the world it is.
  18. timethief
    @norski
Unlike you the negatives outweigh the positives when it comes to the effects of snow in my life. I've been there and I did all that stuff you list above for years on end, when I lived in 40 below temperature zones.

It rarely ever snows on the coast in the rain shadow zone that I live in. When it does it usually melts away in short order. When it doesn't melt away quickly it's the harbinger of trees falling over power lines, electricity outages and car crashes. The roads here are 1 lane in each direction, they have huge changes in elevation, blind corners, hairpin turns, and series of switchbacks. The surfaces are not up to city standards and in most cases there are either very narrow shoulders or none at all.

I had many years of fun in the snow when I lived in other provinces and states in the past, but I can't say that I miss it much at all now. I enjoy seeing pictures of snow and ice. But I don't enjoy shoveling snow or coping with ice, or any of the other consequences of the snowfall.
    1. Norski
I think I know what you mean, about negatives and positives.
  19. MadMadMargo
I live in central Arizona, our winters are very mild - 60s & 70s, but on rare ocassions the cacti get snow capped. Just and hour or so to the north of me is Flagstaff - a ski area.
    1. Norski
Right: I've seen photos of capped cacti. Rather startling, at first sight.
    1. Norski
I see you're in California (I think). Not the mountains, obviously.

Nice climate, but not very interesting. From my point of view. But then, my 'normal' settings were established in North Dakota and Minnesota.
  20. armywife65
it's snowing a little bit here in el paso,tx right now. but not enough to cover the ground in white.
  21. afparks
I live in Ohio and yes it snow here. Got to deal with it every year. I hate the winter here, i hate the snow and shoveling outside. We don't have a garage so we park on the drive way and sometimes the car will be buried by snow and that's what i hate most. clearing the snow from the car and dealing with freezing temperature sometimes below freezing.
  22. coolbuster
i live in the Philippines where snow is but a dream
  23. geekfabrique
French Alps... snowing so much I'm forced to watch Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
  24. rmaxwell142
It just depends on the winter. I live in Idaho where most people assume it snows a lot but I live in a valley so it just depends. Last year, we got a lot of snow, whereas this year we have yet to get any real accumulation.
  25. searchingwithin
Nope, no snow since 1976. I love the snow, and the seasons. I was so glad my son was small the last time I spent in the snow. I had the perfect excuse to play, through snow balls, make snowmen, sled. I was in heaven.
  26. chicky401
In Jersey we get snow but not always a lot. Had a couple of dustings this year. We definitely don't get as much as some states though!
  27. lordiwanttobewhole
Yes it snows in Nova Scotia, Canada, I'm hoping for 4 feet of snow tomorrow so I won't have to go to work, I need the rest
  28. mand3rd
No white Christmas in my part of the world.

    Not where I stay!
Even though, it's a hill station.
  30. creemos
Sort of... more like sleet than snow.
  31. tjefferson85
I'm stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado when i am stateside. It snows a lot there, which is something i am not use to. I'll get use to it though. Everything is so baeautiful when it snows here, the mountains and everything. It's annoying to be in it though!
  32. Lainey
I'm in Michigan and have snow from Nov- Mar.

Here is a link to a flickr slideshow taken Saturday (only a few pictures)of where I live, taken from inside the car looking for the markers to the driveway.

Here in the Windy City, the wind is howling while the snow is stacking as I write this, and our three seasons are quickly turning into two...snow and corruption...bdump dump...

If there is anything left in my pension in 5 years, Florida here I come!!

  34. TZY
In the Philippines, it does not. Although we've got artificial snow :>
    1. afparks
Hi, just curious what is an artificial snow? when i was there i think it was year 2005 i experienced hailstorm while i was in Cavite. Now that was really unusual...
  35. nplbjirel
I live in Kathmandu. It doesn't snow here generally but did last year after 60 years. Snow was not that much great thing for me. I mean I have touched and seen already but for some people here that moment was their life's dream of seeing snow come true.

However, in Jiri from where I origionally am from, it snows every winter. It has aleady started to snow there.
    1. nplbjirel
      Jiri last year.

      Jiri

I have to make snowflakes out of paper, paste it on the window and pretend it is cold. Temperature in the tropics never go below 24 deg celsius.

As kids, we learn it from books the four seasons of the year.
  37. idealpinkrose
It snowed a lot here last weekend and i'm expecting more to come before xmas....
  38. SweetViolet
No, thank goodness. Three years in the Boston area permanently cured me of any desire for/illusions about snow!

I live in South Africa, near the beach, and we have summer 9 months of the year, and soggy wet winters. That's as cold as I ever want to be again!

Where are you in MN? My father's family is originally from there. Meeker Co.
  39. sheilasultani
I live in Norfolk, Virginia and it we get a good snowfall about every five years. I wish it would snow a little more.
  40. PetLvr
We got about 8-10 inches last weekend and we're in the middle of a cold spell up here in Winnipeg. I'd take a picture, but ... I'm lazy.
  41. Sebastyne
This will be my first Christmas away from home and the first no-chance-of-snow-Christmas. Boring.
  42. CrisRo
Not often but when it does, it will ice shortly thereafter. Meaning that we will be out of power for a week and stranded because of pine trees blocking the roads.
  43. 60secondi
In Italy, in my town Padua it's raining, but i know that in the Alpes there are 1.50 metres of snow... look at this webcam in Alto Adige www.meteoindiretta.it/scheda_webcam.php?id_webcam=1352
  44. hadrian1407
Nope...I live in tropical country. to Snow is my dream
    1. JackMandora
Same here in Jamaica. We do get a little "Christmus breeze" from up north but that's just about it. Although they say it snowed one year on Blue Mountain peak.
  45. jhyjek
I live in Ontario, Canada. We're almost as far south as one can get in Canada, so we do get quite a bit of snow, but not as much as those much farther north. This year we started getting snow in November, but yesterday it rained most of the day. Usually we have snow that actually lasts from around mid-December to the end of February.

We are very thankful that it doesn't. I don't know how people live in snow. I was born in Des Moines, and the last time I visited, it was full of snow - scary for a non-snow resident to drive in that stuff! Sort of fun to walk on the fresh stuff, but not so much on the icy stuff..... Kauai today is very, very windy and we do have a lot of rain. That is why it is so green though.... sorry about that.
  47. asosaki
Nope, but I was driving back from Thanks Giving weekend and the snow up north was not fun. I made it safe though.
  48. Scribblerchick
I live in Atlanta. Abuot once a winter we get a snow flurry. Once every few years it will stick to the ground for a few hours. That's it. That's quite enough for me.
  49. fotokujawiak
I live in Poland, now winters are rather mild, when I was kid we used to play in snow tunnels in the winter, it started snowing late October and snow melted at the end of March. Now it's changed but smoetimes it can be few feet of snow and -13 F. Now it's December and still no snow.
  50. MissChrisette
not where I'm currently in. But my home is Korea and yes it snows there!
  51. MrCheeseburger
    Of course. Just snowed yesterday.
  52. LynneaUrania
It snows up in the mountains. And it can just stay there.

  56. roentarre
    No snow at all
  57. LasVegasBill
Rarely does it snow in Las Vegas, Nevada. When it does, it really feels like the holidays.
  58. Sway
It snows everyday here and I absolutely despise it. I cannot even put it into words how much I hate snow! Out of the 10 million reasons why here are 10, not in any order.
1- I hate being in incredible danger every time I drive.
2- I hate frozen locks and windows on my car everyday, which breaks the key or window every so often.
3- Getting flat tires, sometimes bent rims because of the crazy massive potholes everywhere. And all the other extensive/expensive damage caused by the constant barrage of potholes on the road.
4- Not seeing the sun for weeks and then being blinded when it does come out because of the reflection off the snow.
5- Having to go through a cycle of cold and wet shoes and socks to frozen shoes and socks over and over all day, everyday.
6- scraping ice off my car every time I want to drive anywhere.
7- I just don't like being cold, or cold and wet.
8- getting frozen hair in the morning.
9- numb and then hurting nose and fingers every time I pump gas.
10- The over all dismal lack of color everywhere.
This is just 10 reasons off the top of my head, not my top ten. There are countless more reasons I dislike snow. b/w I live in GrandRapids Michigan. We get whats called "lake effect snow" which means it snow literally everyday. I can close my eyes and hope that someday I will be able to move away from the snow, someplace where I will never have to see it ever again in my life. I get a smile on my face just thinking about it.
  59. ohmski
nope. sadly it's no white christmas here.
    1. Sway
You are sooooooo lucky! OMG, you have no idea, how lucky you are. Snow is the devil! So you must be in heaven. I wish I was you right now. Take it from someone who lives with snow everyday, 5-6 months out of the year, for 25 years. Snow is a very bad thing.
  60. EcoInsomniac
Nope.. it doesn't snow.. but it freakin' did yesterday.. I live in San Antonio TX about 3.5 miles away from BlogCatalog offices actually.. We set a record for warmth (85 the hottest it had been on that date since 1939 I believe) on the 9th.. and it snowed/sleeted the same day...
  61. curlydesigh
I live in New York City and it does snow but not yet this season. We usually get a a major snowfall after New Year's. I loved the pictures that everyone shared, very pretty.
  62. gosmelltheflowers
Does the ski dubai snowdome count??
  63. acebrock
Rarely does it snow here. When it does you can see rolled over cars on the side of the road, which tells you just how rare.

I bet it's unhead of out in Ontario (California), because they sit much lower than us (we sitting near San Bernardino where it gets really chilly at night this time of year)
  64. LaMirabelle
East of France : it doesn't snow today.
