I have just posted a guest post on my www.livingtheruraldream.com blog about whether modern-living and all its instant gratification spells the end of snail mail ... thought it would be interesting to find out what everyone here thought about that?

I love getting mail even if it is a rarity these days I love writing letters although I must admit I do not do that as much with the emails but the reality is a letter requires effort and in todays society it is about efficiency

No, I don't think so. Lots of places that have feeble internet access on earth (which we tend to forget)and electricity cut-offs. Computers do pack up and are expensive to buy! Finally, people like to see the postman and in smaller towns or villages know him well.

I think there is nothing like a letter. Its personal and much more exciting to receive! But you're right, nowadays everything is so fast, efficient and handed to you - it takes a bit more to think 'right, I'm going to write a letter!'

Hi Rani, you're right - we do forget about places where we still know the postman! but I wonder if the younger generation in more modern environments really write as much. My guess is not, which is a shame.

The only mail I ever get are bills or bank statements. Frankly I could do without any of them, I'd be happier to have everything done electronically. But, I did need to send a parcel this morning to the other side of he world, so I don't think we can ever do without snail mail, but it would be great if it was faster without adding problems to the environment.

Hi Carigalloway, that's interesting - the impact on the environment - I never considered that. I was lost in the loveliness of receiving a letter. A very interesting point - I wonder what the real impact is?

yes!, please yes. I cannot stand mail. That system is so antiquated. First I think that there needs to be government sponsored wireless internet available all across the US. We will have a little tax increase but in the end it will be cheaper then paying AT&T every month. We could then be given a choice to either have all of our mail done digitally or not. And because the government internet will not have enough bandwidth for servers and businesses, all the big internet providers will focus on the needs of business and such. I know, I know, there a lot of problems with this idea and not very many people would go for it, but if some time was spent really thinking about it you could probably work out all the issues.
