Whilst it is true that keyword meta tags are not as important as they once were, they are still used by search engines, along with the description tag, to decide what the pages are all about ! Yes it is true that without using them you can still get listed, but this method usually takes considerably longer than if you do use them. The last website I submitted was January 27th 2009 within 2 weeks it had several pages in the top twenty of over 12 search engines, 1 of which was Google, the other decent one was Alta-vista & that was without a single back link anywhere in sight.
I doubt very much the same would be possible by disregarding meta tags.-
Meta keywords are as far as I know/have tested/read not used by Google for ranking purpose any more.
Meta description is used to show a description on Google if Google can't find a relavant snippet on the page in response to the search terms.
Other engines I don't know - I believe Yahoo uses Meta keywords, but whether it is for ranking of "information context" I don't know.
Meta keywords is something I only bother with, because it cost nothing and is fast.

@pixelshots
That is simply another social networking site that has a lower ranking than Blog Catalog does. The subject is not joining social networks to promote your blog in and to derive traffic from.
The subject here is registering with search engines, getting a Google webmasters account, generating and submitting a sitemap so your pages get indexed. That way when potential readers use search engines your site will be in the results.
Please read this post from the BC New Users Group carefully and act on it, because I am concerned that you don't seem to understand the vast differences between search engines and social networks. It's truly in your best interest to follow the instructions in the post.
