Has anyone had any experiences with accidents involving drunk drivers? Know someone who was hurt or killed in an accident involving alcohol?

When my sister was in college -- I was still in high school, she was hit head on by a drunk driver. We always had dinner on Sunday evenings & she had come home for the day. She left that evening to drive back to campus. She was only a few minutes up the road from where we lived when the accident happened.

A neighbor saw what had happened, drove to our house & told my parents. We immediately jumped in the car to try to get to the scene of the accident. We didn't know if she was hurt -- all we knew was that she had been in a bad car accident. When we pulled up, there were cars pulled over everywhere, ambulances, & fire trucks. I saw her smashed Chevy Blazer and my heart sunk. I saw my sister laying by the side of the road in the ditch crying. Someone had pulled her out of her vehicle.

This is what happened -- The drunk driver passed out at the wheel and came into her lane. He hit her going about 55 miles per hour. Thankfully, she was not seriously hurt. Her SUV was totalled and she only experienced minor injuries. The bruising from her seat belt alone & the pain/soreness she experienced in the weeks following broke my heart. She was so sore, she could not even dress herself or wash her hair.

This all happened during exam time for my sister. My mom had to drive to her college campus & go with her to her classes because she was not able to even tote her books.

Today, my sister is doing well -- however she still experiences a lot of back pain. I'm SO thankful that she is alright. Although this was a tough time for our family, it could have been much worse.
