One customer claims Mr. Kefalinos offered these words of wisdom when she visited the bakery:

“Would you like some drunken negro heads to go with your coffee? They’re in honor of our new president. He’s following in the same path of Abraham Lincoln; he will get his.”

Do you agree? How do you deal with this type of racism? What do you teach your children about racism?

I can't get the video to work, but from what I saw that is one ugly cookie.

    WTH was he thinking?
    1. deoangel
He actually said that it was in honor of President Obama and he will get what President Abraham Lincoln got! Sounds like a threat to me.
    2. Anok
      You mean....like...he meant a bullet...in the head?

      Man I misread that entirely.
    3. Friday13
He probably didn't mean in that way.

      Probably.

Anyway, the name is hilarious. He could've saved himself a lot of trouble by just naming them something else. He asked for it (or FOX News did ).
    4. Anok
Well, you know, I originally thought he meant that he was following in his footsteps, politically speaking.

You know, racial equality (or the road to) etc...
    5. Friday13
I know. And, while that's probably what he meant to say, the he will get his at the end of that comparison wasn't the best of ways to express that.

(then again, neither are the cookies )
  2. Jeunelle
I got to say that doesn't look like the Obama I am use to.
It sure doesn't look like the Obama I know.

Looking at this chocolate thing that he made it just goes to show that racism is never defeated,
there is always going to be one ignorant bastard that will surface to bring to light more hurtful shit
like this in a world that is trying to heal and forgive.
  3. siralmo
    LOL at the title
    1. Sylvia
Once again, I don't know what to say.
    2. siralmo
there isn't much to say its just hilarious

imagine if someone said that to you

      i would literally ROFL
    3. sensico
I wouldn't be laughing...I would be offended...what the hell would make one laugh at that!?!?
    4. siralmo
you would think you were on canid camera or some similar show
  4. LynneaUrania
I'm not buying any of their cookies.

My daughter started school in an almost entirely Latino school. Who was her best friend? A pretty black girl...the only other one who wasn't Latino. They were inseparable and grew up together. When her friend turned 18 she arranged to spend a weekend together at a Santa Monica hostel. Then beneath the Santa Monica Pier she asked what time it was.

    12:30.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" she cried and they were in the longest hug 2 friends could have.
  5. aningeniousname
Is this racist??? or just cack? I'm voting for Cack.
    1. Anok
      Cack or crack?

I vote crack. that would explain these cookies.
    2. aningeniousname
Cack a Yorkshire word meaning crap.
    3. Anok
Well I know what cack is.

I still think crack is the explanation for this.
    4. aningeniousname
To me racism is the belief one race is inherently superior to another, crude charictures(spelling?) don't really say that to me. I wouldn't be insulted by a pink version and I doubt black people are really insulted by that.
  6. deoangel
I'm just so disappointed at the level that people will take in their ignorance and racism. I think that we had overcame a lot of barriers such as feminism, when Hillary ran for President and Barack when he won the election. I believe in the whole freedom of speech and expression, however, shouldn't that have its limitations?!
    1. Anok
Well, his business will decline, which is punishment for his ignorance.

Although I did get a sense...just for a second that when he was confronted about the unflattering cookie that he was genuinely offended.

Kinda like insulting a 6 year old's art project. If they didn't have that name, I would think that maybe it was just the best he could do....
  7. deoangel
If you were able to look at the entire video on my blog, you would have seen that someone had called him and threatened to burn his store down. Do you think he deserves to have police protection?
    1. csiunatc
Does he deserve Police protectoin from crime... of course he does.
    2. Anok
I managed to watch it all (finally it worked!).

IN all fairness, yes, he deserves protection from imminent physical violence.

The man's a jackass, but that doesn't mean that others have the right to physically harm him. Boycott the store - and let his business fail. Otherwise he will become a martyr of sorts for white supremest movements.

King was a proponent of non violent opposition to racism, and for the very reason of not adding fire to the flames. Don't make the asshats the good guys.
    3. csiunatc
"Don't make the asshats the good guys."

      Well put
    4. Anok
You can steal that if you want to
  8. csiunatc
    Kinda funny,

In Sweden, a mix of oats, butter and cocoa with a coconut flake topping rolled into small balls are commonly referred to as "negro balls" (negerbollar)

They aren't sold under that name anymore, (called chocolate balls now) but I honestly don't know anyone that doesn't still call them the old name. It's become so synonymous with the product that no one actually thinks about what it really means.

You can search for negerbollar on google and get plenty of recipes.

Wonder what the market would be here if you named them Obama Balls. (or more exactly, wonder how long before the daring entrepreneur gets shot

Edited to add: The wiki article.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chokladboll

Edit for second add... Be careful with overeating. The oats do swell in your stomach... Just remembered why I haven't eaten these in a long time. Overeating incident.. it wasn't pretty.
    1. deoangel
You know I really think that we should not intentionally try to promote any type of racism whatsoever. I am not racist at all. However, I wonder how some people would respond if they made a "HONKY WANNA CRACKER" cake or something even worse. I strongly believe that if it was President Bush it would be more of an uproar. Ignorance is just that...ignorant. I think more things should be done to business owners who profit from other people without their permission. If we were to add a special tax to all those people make Obama t-shirts, DRUNKEN NEGRO COOKIES, and other stuff, perhaps we would be a little bit out of debt!
    2. Anok
OK, the honkey wanna cracker is really funny.
    3. csiunatc
      Your point is excellent Anok,

It's only ok for it to be funny if its about something other than blacks.

    4. Anok
No, it was just the arrangement of the words, really. Like Polly wanna cracker, but totally inappropriate
    5. HollytheHousewife
      THANK U CSI!!
  9. Jeunelle
1st of all that broad nose on that cookie looks like the one that they shot off of the Sphinx.
Those red eyes sends a message that he is busy smoking too much weed or drinking too much coffee or smokin too much crack or needs some visine or has conjunctivitis.
    I am really offended.
    1. deoangel
Ok. If you put it that way, its funny. Its just funny and offensive.
    2. Jeunelle
I know it and I am cracking up and feeling guilty at the same time that my mind even bothered
      to go there. lmao
  10. ArsenicCookies
hmmmm..... looks to me like he meant it to be funny and is overwhelmed at the backlash. I think that it is ridiculous that people are going to make threats over a cookie. It is one of those things that seems to be a little bit blown up, there are comics who say worse about every race. Have you ever heard Lisa Lampanelli? Carlos Mencia's early stuff? I understand that he is not a comic, but I have seen way worse. I think this is one of those fine lines that depending who does it or says it, its either hilarious or offensive. Unfortunately for that guy, it was more offensive.
    1. deoangel
I just think that he took it a little too far and that this is not blown up. He has a business. As a business owner, he made a huge mistake that he doesn't regret.
    2. ArsenicCookies
its possible. however if people are dumb enough to risk their freedom making death threats, I see that is an overreaction. Personally, I think that he probably wants someone to torch the store, all of that insurance money in this economy could be a lifesaver.
I don't know if he should regret it or not. It is one of those that if he does, he secretly will become more racist over the censorship and it will just be for show and not sincerity. Overreation breeds intolerance.
  11. HollytheHousewife
Well do you regret saying "HONKEY WANNA CRACKER"?
    The sword cuts both ways.
    1. legbamel
It was an example of a racial slur, not one that she was making against anyone. (Like Anok, it cracked me up because I knew that she didn't mean it. It was simply an attempt at an equivalent example, and a darn good one at that.)
  12. csiunatc
    The thing is,

I don't see why anyone has to be offended at all.

    ITS A DAMN COOKIE!
    1. ArsenicCookies
ding ding ding! I totally agree. I think that when people look for something to be offended by, they will always find it. Does that make it offensive? NO. I think it makes some more sensitive than others
  13. HollytheHousewife
csi Are u talking to me? I'm not offended. She is offended by the cookie. I'm not offended by the comment. It just proves the point it's ok to say "honkey wanna cracker" "racist". It's not ok to serve "you know what" kind of cookie. If I actually said the word I would be kicked off of blog catalog. It's ok for her though.???? makes a lot of sense.
    1. csiunatc
I was making a general statement.

There are more important things to be offended by right now.

A trillion spending rampage would be a great place to start being offended.
  14. legbamel
I have to say, I was offended at first but after more reading and consideration, I think it was the man's really loose grasp of the English language that was the problem. I took the "he'll get his" comment to be threatening as well, but I don't believe it was intended that way. Had he realized what it meant, I'm sure he would have worded that sentence much differently.
  15. HollytheHousewife
@ csi, I agree. So why the thread then?
    1. csiunatc
      xcuse me?
  16. HollytheHousewife
    @ leg
so you don't think the guy who made the "cookies" was being racist?
    1. legbamel
I don't think he intended to be. I do think that's how he came across, and that's why people are offended. The cookies intended to look like Obama, hey, who would be offended by that (except maybe the Keebler elves)? It's the naming and the sales pitch that got him into trouble.
  17. jafabrit
I am not buying the claim it was in honor of our new president. This baker chose a title that is negative and along with the ugly visual presentation makes his claim a load of caka. He isn't a comedian and he wasn't using parody or sarcasm to make a point.

Having said that I don't support threats of any kind, this is a free country and he is free to make an ugly cookie, and others are free to complain and boycott any form of negative stereotyping.
  18. HollytheHousewife
you said there are more important things to be offended about. I agree so why start a race based thread?
    1. csiunatc
      I didn't
    2. jafabrit
That is assuming one is offended Holly, which I don't think you are, neither am I, but my question to the general reader here is this. Even if we are not personally offended by a negative stereotype does that mean we should be quietly indifferent to them?
  19. HollytheHousewife
csi, yes you did. "there are more things to be offended about. Like the trillion dollar spending rampage" I agreed w/u. Now are you saying the cookie is more important?
    I guess i'm confused.
    1. csiunatc
      I guess you are.

      I didn't start this thread.
  20. HollytheHousewife
Jafabrit, You and I aren't offended at being called "honkeys",but the lady who posted the thread is offended by the cookie. I am trying to figure out how raceism works.
    1. legbamel
She didn't call anyone a honky. She asked how you would feel about someone naming a cake with a racial epithet. Obviously, it does offend you, if you can't see past the word to the question that contained it.
    2. jafabrit
she was using is as an example Holly, not directing towards you are anybody else.
  21. HollytheHousewife
No I'm not. I know you didn't start the thread. Why is the lady who saw the dang cookie see it so important to start a thread based on race?
I think the answer is: she was offended by the cookie, and so was everyone else.
BUT. When she cracked the joke "honkey wanna cookie" it was ok to laugh and not be offended. They are both racist remarks.
    1. HollytheHousewife
      @ jafabrit
Just like I told legbamel. I know she wasn't calling me a "honkey" I wasn't even here when that comment was made.
My question is" Why is the cookie offensive, and the cake is funny? They are both raceist remarks and anok and legbamel thought the honkey joke was funny.Even if it wasn't directed to anyone. Why?
    2. jafabrit
I don't why some think the either is funny, better ask them Holly?
    3. HollytheHousewife
I guess I will but that in it's self is offensive to some people.
  22. HollytheHousewife
@ leg, I know she wasn't calling me names, but still you and anok thought it was funny. I didn't think the dang cookie was funny.
Do you not understand what I'm saying?
The "cookie" wasn't funny. BUT. The "cake"was.
    1. legbamel
The cookie was real. The cake is a lie.
    2. legbamel
Also, the cake name does not specify that whichever honky is being mocked is intoxicated, as well.
  23. HollytheHousewife
hey! yall are just gonna leave me hanging.
  24. HollytheHousewife
    @ leg
I just wiggled my nose.lol. Now we got a cake. Why is the cake funny and the cookie racist? Gr8 now I need a cookie, wait no a cupcake. lol totally neutral.
    1. csiunatc
      Absolutely not.

Cupcake is a slur used against gays.. So you can't say that either.

The only ones that apparently "can't be offended" are white christians.
    2. legbamel
Cupcake is also sexist, a slur used by men to denigrate and subjugate women, often followed by a request for coffee or "run out and get us some sandwiches before you do the filing".

If I thought someone had actually made a cake and was selling it under that name, I'd have been offended.
    3. ArsenicCookies
@ Csi lol I am offended at the name angel food cake! It's an insult to my religion! hahahaha soooo kidding
  25. HollytheHousewife
exactly! so you do see what I am asking? so what in the hell am I allowed to say? I got it I'm going with the bubble gum. Plain generic bubble gum.
