I wrote a post for Earth Hour. I found out about it from Bloggers Unite, and I thought it was a cool idea. Is anyone else participating? If you are, did you write a post about it?

It's pleasant to know that Earth Hour campaign is widely and heavily promoted in my country this year. It's everywhere.

A pleasant surprise as it has never been done before.
    1. MrCheeseburger
      What country are you in?
  3. PsyBates
Earth Hour is reaching more than 2000 cities worldwide ! The Indian campaign looks strong with Aamir Khan, Sachin Tendulkar ... Amitabh Bachchan leading the way !

    Hey guys!

I am def. participating. I wrote on my blog today, but I am sure most people are going to join in. After all what's so bad with an excuse to do nothing? Staying in the dark meditating doesn't sound like such a bad idea

Commented on yours. I liked it a lot.

Lol. Its great that you're willing to make that sacrifice of unplugging your amps. But don't you play acoustic?
    2. acousticguitarist
yes I do, but I did mention the batteries.

But really, playing live or anything else to do with music involves energy....oh, I'll play slower

I understand that a lot of greenhouse gasses are released from beef production... just saying
    1. MrCheeseburger
Yes, it is true. They want to harvest some of them (Mostly methane) with big balloons on cows backs.

      sounds dangerous during a thunderstorm...

      Blazing stampede anyone?

Over one million households will participate. This year, global monuments will also participate like the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State building. It will be interesting, however, to see what Las Vegas does.

Have you submitted your post to Bloggers Unite?

We have had multiple forum threads on this topic in these last few days. I'm wondering if members would not like to post to your links to the Bloggers Unite site, along with all the other Earth Hour participants.

      Already did
    2. timethief
Yes, I know you did because I've been over there. I'm wondering if the others posting their links here and in the other threads have joined in with the Bloggers Unite initiative or not. I hope they have.

I wrote slightly different posts on each of my blogs. It was really easy to make it fit in with each theme. I'm looking forward to having the lights out!

Just got my post up, just after I turned the lights back on. Combined the idea with Daylight Saving Time, Summer Time over here in Europe.

      You're welcome.

I actually blogged against this, I'm for the green cause but the power surging that takes place at the end of the hour is really counterproductive. This also makes alot of people feel like they did something so they can feel less guilty when they are not being green.
    1. MrCheeseburger
Have you ever watched the MythBusters episode that said having lights on for an hour uses more energy than turning them on? The results are here:
      kwc.org/mythbusters/2006/12/episode_69_22000_foot_fall_lig.html
Under "Lights On or Off". Turning your lights back on at the end of the hour hardly uses any energy at all.
    2. becthomasphotograp
Either does just keeping them on, some poeple want it to go completely dark as in kill the power though.
    3. MrCheeseburger
There are some people who are turning everything off. I'm just turning off my lights and my computer. If I unplug my fridge the milk will go bad XD. I'm not really sure how much energy that uses. I guess it could use a lot, though.
    4. becthomasphotograp
The part that really irks me is that this is to "save" energy and save the planet, alot of that propaganda going around, then they turn around and want you to twitter, blog and take photos of the event. It really is oxymoronic to preach save energy but make sure that while you're doing it post it on the net.
    5. becthomasphotograp
I should also mention that if you were in my house you often wouldn't see alot if any lights on until closer to 9 this time a year, and there are many nights we don't turn them on because the other electronics provide enough light.

It's completely symbolic and designed to make people feel like they're doing something important. The motivation behind it is fine; it's just that this would do no good, and perhaps might even end up being a drag on the grid. That is, if lots of people were to participate, which they won't, thank goodness.
    1. MrCheeseburger
The whole thing is just a first step. It's much easier for people to do this than to switch everything in their house to solar power.
