It's a stunt - utter waste of time.

More energy is consumed turning the light on and off, so what is gained by this?

More people do seem to be coming to that conclusion...

I've done my share of "Earth time", with the power deficit and all. With that 8-hour blackout from a few months ago, I think I did eight years' worth of "Earth Hours"! Now, adding up all the power outages and blackouts ... whoa.

poor service of our local electricity provider caused at least two hours blackout nearly everyday since two months ago. we've got too much shared. so when "Earth Hour" was set, all we did at home was to turn off two bulbs and went on singing in the videoke to celebrate "Earth Hour".

I turn off all lights except for the room I am in, just a good habit my mom instilled so I guess I was in on it sort of

I haven't used more than 2hrs worth of heating a day since Feb, now given it's still bloomin' cold in the UK that's doing a darn sight more to preserve energy than turning off the lights for 1hr a year!

It's a half assed response to a serious problem.

A waste of energy? What? To walk over and flip a light switch?
    1. gosmelltheflowers
But does that flick make any difference?

It has nothing to do with an hour here or there, the republicans messed everything up. We have to wait for new energy, which we are working on - they are doing incredible stuff with solar

I dunno why Jesus put all our god damn oil underneath that country in the first place..

I know people who dont recycle because they think its a waste of time
Maybe turning your lights off isn't saving a lot but tuning out and not even trying because its too hard is worst
    1. gosmelltheflowers
Probably right but what difference does it really make?

It can't hurt, maybe it might help with awareness, but I think an ongoing public promotion about saving energy will have a more lasting effect.
I do know light pollution was taken very seriously in the part of NJ we lived.
