I was walking out of the store today with my products in my reusable shopping bag when the idea for this post occurred. I was behind two girls walking out with two plastic bags for their products. One bag had a gallon of milk in it, the other had a bag of chips. What, I wondered, is the need for one bag, let alone two, when the products could just as easily have been carried with no bags?

So I wrote a post on my eco pet peeves... and was wondering what yours are.

People who think we need to save the planet.

    We don't

The planet will look after itself until the sun burns out..we need to save ourselves and go find somewhere else to live, or the next cycle of extinction will be our last as a species.

What rock did you crawl out of? You made my point exactly. People who deny that we are not doing any damage to the Earth. Take responsibility for your actions. Geez

I'm with DVS on this one. Your response is condescending and counterproductive to civilized discourse. But then again, that's what it has devolved to in this country, an agree-with-me-or-shut-the-hell-up attitude.

And of course I just realized I'm responding to a thread that's almost a year old. Meh, screw it.

The bag issue irks me, too.

Water bottles, also, bother me. The use of them, the trashing of them -- especially because a cup and some tap water is fine, at least in the city where I live where it tastes fine. People should invest in cups, or better still some durable bottles that can be reused over and over again without the fear of the poisons of plastic.

You're in St. Louis, right? The water here, in the county, is TERRIBLE. We use filters because it's undrinkable otherwise.

My parents have well water, and it's nasty. They buy bottled water in bulk, which makes me angry. What makes me more angry, though, is that they don't even recycle the bottles when they're done.

I agree about the wasteful bottles, but here you really can not drink the tap water. I do get bottled water, but I also buy just gallon sized bottles of drinking water and refill the small bottles. Then the gallon jugs, you can take and refill at most stores.

I'm in the city. The water from the tap is fine. Just doesn't always get as cold as I like, so I just keep a jug in the fridge. When I was in the county it was fine -- though I was closer to the city. Maybe they use different filtrations systems in different places. I know when I was in Columbia, MO the water from the tap was horrendous.

I used to live in Colombia also, and I will second you on the "quality" of water.

When I lived on North County St. Louis, I thought the water was just fine. Now I live in Wentzville, and I will say they have a great water filtration system also.

I'm in North County and the water is horrible... When did you live here RTB? We have a white bathtub and when I fill it up, the water looks blue... nasty.

I am going to side with the anti-water bottle people. I live in Chicago which has really good tap water. As do it's suburbs.

I really feel that bottled water is a giant racket for many reasons, not the least of which is the environmental cost of bottling and shipping it across the country. Filter your tap water. Honestly, it's the US, not Mexico.

The most popular brand of bottled water in the US is not even spring water, its Aquafina by the Coca-Cola Co. It basically filtered Atlanta tap water.

      RACKET.
    7. JohnSexton
I agree with you on that one. Drinking bottled water is incredibly wasteful, especially since most people don't recycle the bottles afterward. Not to mention, it's extremely expensive.

In many countries it's unheard of to not take a bag with you when you go to the market/grocery store. We're kinda lazy here in Canada & the US when it comes to this stuff.

But, my big pet peeve is when the government makes it sound like individuals have to do all the work when businesses get away with much more ... and should be doing more. 2 examples:

1 - big business should stop making unnecessary packaging. If they did that I wouldn't have to spend 20 minutes a week sorting my garbage.

2 - I resent having to spend 20 minutes a week sorting my garbage when I live downtown and can clearly see that the businesses don't do that. They create way more garbage than I do, yet everything just gets tossed into the dumpsters.

    Paper waste in an office!!!!

I work on a floor with over 100 people. There is no need for paper all over the place. The computers we have are up to date. We have all the tools right at our fingertips via the keyboard. Yet, people are still stuck in their "I need paperwork or I will never get anything done" frame of mind.

No, you are just an idiot that is too lazy to learn how to function with computer screens and toggle buttons. If companies with medium to large size personnel would implement a second video card and second monitor, give people two weeks to get accustomed to them, they would pay for themselves in a short amount of time that companies pay for printer paper.

after awhile, production goes up, revenue goes up, and workers have more time to bitch about other things.
    1. aeye
Not just in offices. In the schools I have taught in, the paper waste is outrageous.
    2. pumpkinlights
OH aeye is so right about the paper waste in schools. Where I used to teach, every spring when they would clean up the supply rooms you would not believe the paper they would throw out because they didn't want to have to count it and organize it.

Watching huge amounts of food been thrown away at a restaurant table.

I'm with drowsey on this one. Supermarkets selling stuff cheaper in small containers than larger containers. polybore.blogspot.com/2008/06/when-is-buying-bulk-more-expensive-at.html

Also supermarkets using packaging at all or fancy misleading packaging.
    polybore.blogspot.com/2008/06/squeeky-clean.html
    1. focusorganic
I don't tend to notice larger containers being more expensive then multiple smaller containers, actually. Most of the time, for products I am looking for, the larger is cheaper than buying 2 of the smaller. Then again, many of the things I buy are on sale, so it might just be luck. Now I'm going to be checking all the products at the store for that, lol.
    2. polybore
It is well worth checking. Please let me know if you spot any (I am certain you will), it drives me round the bend.

Civilian hummers get to me. So do monster trucks.
    1. dharmagypsy7
I second that.. I wonder why anyone needs a car THAT big...must be a Napolean complex.

LOL this is so funny because I too, came up with my post of the day based on plastic bags and a store run last night.

My eco-PEEVE is having a roommate who have ZERO eco-consciousness. I follow her around turning out lights, get pissed when she runs the dishwasher half full because we're out of forks, etc.

    Five-pound heavy-duty plastic containers for a tinsey 4GB gadget.

There is one major grocery store chain in my area, and one of their locations has stopped using plastic bags. You must bring resusable bags with you to grocery shop. I am in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada.
    1. JohnSexton
That's a great idea. More stores should adopt that policy.
  11. JamCan
We have a store chain here like that. They will provide the bags but you have to pay for them or else bring your own.
  12. seaglassorganic
Our local recycling program will only accept plastic milk, water & soda bottles. No plastics accept these are allowed.
  13. jafabrit
I would rather try to remember to take my own bags into the grocery store but having said that, I would NOT put chips in the same bag as a heavy item like milk. So I can understand why they were put in two bags. My pet peeve is more with the stores that continue to use plastic bags and doesn't use biodegradable recycled plastic bags.
