I use images in all my posts, it helps to get my posts indexed higher in search results from google.
It is amazing how many visitors I get from google image searches. I also use my own blogs to link to my other related blogs.

Sylvia, I have a question for you. Where do you get your photos for your blog and what about copyright? I do have Google ads on my blog, so I'm not sure how that works out.

      Thanks for any help!

      Hi Timeobserver,

my blog is about advertising, the images I use are very easy to find since they are advertisements and they are meant to be seen.
I do send a email inquiry before using any of them, I don't ask, I ask if the advertising firm and sometimes the company itself would like their ad put up on my blog.

Google also owns the server your blog is on, so naturally it will be in the top 10 for searches on anything.

I've found that putting my blog link at the bottom of my messages gets more people to my blog. It saves people clicks from going to my profile and then to m blog. So I'm saving a few extra steps for people that way.

Only that's kinda against the BlogCatalog TOC.
    3. Timesobserver
I don't know if that's true or not ThriftShopRomantic, but I can't argue with the results. :-) According to SiteMeter, many people have found it easier to visit my blog because of my signature link than going to my profile.

I understand the convenience. But truly, it's against BC TOC. I'm not trying to give you a hard time-- I'm only telling you because I don't want the admins to give you a hard time later for link-dropping.

For me, blog content is king. It can come under the form of pictures, poetic words, etc......

Hm.. comment on other people's blogs and make interesting content that people will want to come back and read. When you comment make it a useful one, not *ooo cool blog* or something. And try to get people to exchange blog links with you.

Nude Blogging, works wonders, but the quality of visitors is pathetic.

I found changing my header made a difference, also youtube that is targeting a specific thing helps and also good content that other people doing the same as you link to.

I think it's important to define who you are and what you're on about. I get 500 people a day now and it has gradually got to that point by doing the above.

I would update your keyword content regularly - make sure you add metatag keywords and metatag description to your site. Then regular updates will get your blog listed higher - you'll get more organic results -- and when you update regularly those passerbys will stick around and that's your opportunity to turn them into 'customers' with your kick-butt content.

Small Consistent Improvements will get you way up there in the ranks.

I get a lot of traffic from reddit.com, but usually it's tech and liberal/libertarian politics that works well there. You can think about search engine traffic and make sure your posts mention a lot of words people might use to find the info. Keywords and tags help there.

IMHO there is no single best way to get traffic. Any advice we give you is dependent upon what you have already done to get traffic. In blogging content is king, hence, it's the draw to your site. There are no shortcuts to increasing organic traffic, which is the only traffic that has any lasting value. Increasing traffic is the natural consequence of relationship building.
Here are some ways to promote your blog and increase your readership.

    Here is my blog: www.codeforexcelandoutlook.com/blog/

Here are just a few tips you can use to improve your hit count. I use most/all of these techniques. You will find most of these tips heavily favor Wordpress, since Wordpress makes SEO so easy, it works for you so you can concentrate on the king of blog popularity: killer content that makes people
visit your blog and recommend it to friends.

1- Get your site on its own domain. (for example, www.mysite.com/myblog/)
2- Get a good blogging platform: I recommend Wordpress. Regardless of what platform you use, customize the hell out of the layout and colors.
3- Create a sitemap for your site and submit it to Google, Yahoo and MSN:

To create a sitemap, visit www.xml-sitemaps.com/. Wordpress makes it even easier because it has a plugin that can auto-generate your sitemap whenever you update your site (and it auto-notifies Google for you).

For Google, go to google.com and set up an account. Search for "Webmaster Tools" and set up your site there. Submit a sitemap so Google can find all your pages easily. Otherwise you might have to wait until they get around to spidering your site.

To submit a sitemap to Yahoo and MSN, use the links below. Just change "http://www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xml" to the location of your sitemap.

    webmaster.live.com/ping.aspx?siteMap=http://www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xml
    search.yahooapis.com/SiteExplorerService/V1/ping?sitemap=http://www.yoursit...

4- Visit www.kping.com/ping/ and set up automatic pings on your blog, so whenever you update it, King Ping will let other services know.

5- Ping or visit the following services whenever you update your blog. Remember to change "http://www.yoursite.com/rss.xml" to the address of your rss feed file. Again, Wordpress makes this easy by automatically pinging whatever service you choose.
    rpc.twingly.com/
    ping.snap.com/ping/RPC2
    rpc.blogcatalog.com/
    rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping
    ping.feeds.yahoo.com/rss/ping?u=http://www.yoursite.com/rss.xml
    www.moreover.com/ping?u=http://www.yoursite.com/rss.xml

6- Make sure your SEO is on point. Everyone says "build content and they will come." Rubbish. You need to promote your site, otherwise it will be at the bottom of the Google results page for your keywords. Which translates to "zero" new visitors.

Every page/post should have title, description and keyword meta tags. Wordpress makes it easy, with plugins like Robots Meta and All In One SEO that handle this for you automatically.

Set up a Google Analytics account so you can see where your traffic is coming from, what searches people are doing for your keywords, so you can see how your site performs against the competition.

7- Do I have to say this: Make sure you have content that others want to read. If you were a visitor to your own blog, would you stay? Be honest and evaluate if you have content that would draw visitors. Pick a niche and stick with it. My blog is about MS Excel and Outlook programming. Is your blog about nothing in particular? Give people a reason to visit.

8- Yours is not a Wordpress blog, but this link might benefit you:

    yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/#offsite

Be an active participant in the community you want to get traffic from. I avoid Digg because it seems to only work for sites that are already popular. StumbleUpon has provided some great traffic, but you need to become a regular user otherwise it is obvious when you are only trying to increase your traffic. Check Google to see what websites/blogs are ranking for
the keywords you want to rank with, comment on their posts, join in the discussion, and eventually traffic will come to you. Ignore your competition at your own peril.

9- Be patient. Traffic doesn't come overnight!

I hope these tips help you.

Great tips, although I did not ask for them directly but just stumbled upon this discussion and found your post to be really helpful. think I am going to save these on my hard disk. Thanks!
    3. GreenSomethings
also wanted to ask - you say in one of your tips to get one's blog on his own domain. I have a URL redirect (www.greensomethings.com/blog) to the typepad domain (greensomethings.typepad.com) - does that matter?

there are some ways to make your friends away from your blog----
one of them, put uninteresting avatar
    1. JP2112
You can have the most "interesting" avatar in the world, if your site has nothing worth looking at, most people won't come back.
  22. scoutle
Scoutle.com is an automated social network for bloggers that helps you find, promote and connect blogs using an automated rating and matching system. You don't have to do anything but your blog will be connected to those alike.

A brand new version has just been launched this week at www.scoutle.com
    1. kaguvkov
I am a member of scoutle and so far so good. I haven't done anything except for accepting the meetings of the online robots.
  23. kaguvkov
You have to make good keywords combination.
