What do you think? It cannot be denied that bands change their image to suit the current trends.

But with bands with names like 'suicidal tendancies', and self harm and suicide being so prevalent among young people, are the record companies being irrisponsible?

This has been around forever. It's nothing new. This stuff has been around since the punk scene in the 70's. The band you are referring to Suicidal Tendencies has been around since 1981.

oh. haha put me in my place.

I suppose every generation has its own trends, and the punk rock scene was one fo the dangerous ones.

But it does tick me off, because it's blatantly associated with these problems.

You're getting cause and effect mixed up. Kids who are angry, rebellious and troubled created these genres of music as art and protest.
    3. JonnyDunMind
Very good point. Just goes to show anger can cloud your judgement. While I feel a little silly, I'm glad I brought this up and got a better perspective on it. cheers

Cloud your judgment? Using dark names and having dark lyrics doesn't cause people to commit crimes (or suicide). It's an expression of an idea that our Puritanical society likes to sweep under the rug. That's what it's protesting.

Regardless, I'm the exact opposite of emo.

      Happy-go-lucky?
    6. voodooKobra
Stoic. There are emo kids who try to epitomize happiness, you just don't see too many of them. Therefore, the opposite of emoness would have to be stoicism.

This may sound harsh, but if a band's name can make you kill yourself, chances are you needed therapy a long time ago. Don't blame the record companies for that.
    1. Friday13
Yes, we can't blame SlashWrists Records for that.
    2. voodooKobra
How many emo kids actually kill themselves instead of intentionally doing it wrong for the attention? Because that's what the majority of the cases are: Cries for attention.
    3. Friday13
      That's one for GraphJam.
    4. voodooKobra
      Hahaha yeah.
    5. MissSuzie
      @Friday: Haha!

@Voodoo: I think most suicides (attempted or successful -- emo related or not) are a plea for attention, sadly. You edited and now I sound redundant, but what the hell, I'm leaving it.
    6. Friday13
@Suzie: indeed, especially when they announce it! "Tomorrow night ... I'll end the suffering. Don't anybody try to stop me ... ", etc.
    7. voodooKobra
      Good point, Suzie.

It's terrible that people choose to call for attention that way.

Also, a lot of people would happily judge an individual in this situation as 'crying for attention' without offering them the help and attention they are seeking.
    1. MissSuzie
Sadly, it's kind of like the "sex talk" you have as a kid. It is an uncomfortable area to talk about and often gets swept under a rug -- until it's too late.
  4. amrhima
I tried to kill myself once, wasnt really a call for attention, at least not consciously.

Thanks for sharing, I'm sorry to hear it, but glad you're still with us. I'm sure many people have their own reasons.

This has been a big issue for me lately, and theres still a couple of angry unresolved bits swishing around, hence the random discussion.

again, glad you're still with us

It's sad that such things get lot of supporters and go unchallenged.. someone will file a case some day, then perhaps things may improve
  6. HollytheHousewife
Hmmmm, this isn't what tash said emo was
  7. crazyTsu
it seems more in tune with BC's meaning?
  8. jeremyjanson
Well I do think it's evil in a way, but not for that reason. The problem with Emo is that the values it advances weaken people and encourage self-loathing and a lack of dignity and comportment. On the other hand, the kids listening to it are the real fools, and the real source of the evil.
    1. crazyTsu
What is the law doing to protect the vulnerable? Zilch!
    2. jeremyjanson
I agree, but at the same time I'm not entirely convinced that's a bad thing. I say let them destroy themselves. We can't really be alive if we're not responsible for ourselves. How far is too far in this regard is among the central discussions of political philosophy.
    3. crazyTsu
you will feel differently. just wait till you have couple these vulnerables under your care
    4. jeremyjanson
Just wait until someone nearly destroys your life through oppression.
    5. crazyTsu
been there, and out of it

the words responsibility and record company's are not compatible in many cases.

It;s up to the individuals to take responsibility for themselves. Each generation has its poor role models, regardless how fantastic Hendrix and others were, they were terrible models for youth to build themselves on. And I'm not talking about their personalities and saying that they weren't good people at the core, but they were heavy drug users and many people followed their style because it was cool.
