It seems like lot of the BC members are expecting or having babies real soon!

Just wondering what you think is the most baby essential baby items a new parent would need.

There's SO many option now a days and I hope parents who have been through it all can give some advice

the baby bouncer?

the baby bjorn?

Diapers and formula...you can never have enough

lol... well I knew that one. I am planning to breastfeed and cloth diapering although my future mother in law thinks I am crazy for even trying to go the cotton route.

Well then you have to have the "vibrating seat thing"...worked wonders for my daughter who had colic for the first six months. As long as she was in that thing, she was quiet.

dharmagypsy7 is there a reason for going the cotton route? other than cost effective?

    Essential items are

Patience ~ with the baby and yourself and your partner
Forgiveness ~ the ability to say its okay if I dont get things perfect because that is not what being a parent is about
Gratitude ~ For the blessing a child is

Patience!!! that's a big thing for me. I don't really have any.. hopefully I will cultivate some soon!

those are essentials to have too.

Yes, many parents seem to rave about that. I am looking into it. Thanks!

Wow, great to hear you are going with cloth diapers.
Hope you have a good washing machine

actually I don't.. but I am getting a portable one just for the diapers It's less water consumption and takes less electricity. We live in an apartment and don't have washer hookup but I think I like this idea better.

and I am going with Organic cotton.

We went through a lot of onesies, that is, t-shirts and long-sleeve shirts that had snaps at the bottom to snap shut over the diaper. We thought my mother and sister were crazy for giving us so many, but they were really useful things.

yes, onesies! I like the ones with the foots on them too.. I think they are called something else..they look so comfy.. wish they made them in adult sizes!

I don't understand why people dress up their infants in all these frilly uncomfortable things (unless it's a special occasion) it's like they are dressing up a doll or something.

When we wanted to deck out our son, or just be practical, either way, it was OshKosh overalls. But not just any OshKosh. They had to have snaps running up one leg and down the other. No need then to take them off when changing the baby.

If you're doing cloth diapers, you'll need some sort of cover to go over them. We used a wool thing that had lots of lanolin in it. The idea was that it breathed, unlike plastic.

BUT, there came a time when our baby got really big and produced a volume that cloth was not up to, especially not at night. And then we went over to the dark side and got disposable diapers.

I am going to try do cotton as much I can.. they also have these new Eco-friendly diapers called G diapers which has cotton outer shell and plastic free inserts that you just flush away so the diapers don't end up in landfill but it's as costly as disposable one if not more so...

      sorry - I'm in a funny mood - AGAIN!

OK Serious tip - you'll like this one!
Get a tub or basket (handles make it easier to carry when also carrying baby) and fill it with nappies, wipes, cotton wool (roll is cheaper but you may find balls easier), lotions and talc etc and keep it very close by.

Then when a nappy change is called for, you have everything close by. DOn't bother with changing stations - sit on the floor with a cheap changing mat - they always split up the sides after a bit of use anyway so don't waste money.

My other big suggestion - Have FUN! Babies are about having fun - its easy to get stressed when you don't sleep, the house looks a tip and you feel crap but its over all to quick. If visitors come round, they take you as they find you (we really don't mind you know) and suggest they might like to make you a cup of tea rather than you jumping up (assuming you have the energy) and making them one.

I was a house husband for 5 years - looked after my son from 8 weeks and 2 years later his sister from 8 weeks when their mum went back to work.

P.s - Good luck and hope all goes well.
