Tonight - in what's likely to be a painful thing for both Republican and Democrat to watch - the final act in the Shakespearian drama that is Hillaret. Tonight, she has to fall on her sword in front of the entire DNC.

Well - this Republican salutes our old adversary. She's probably going give the Elephant one last shot at redemption in the fall as a result.

... and it has ABBA! So it can't be a bad post!

We would have been a fortunate country to have had Hillary Clinton as it's president. Whoever put together that video is spiteful and just plain mean. She is a great lady and has done nothing to deserve ridicule, such as this. So wallow in your glee and when you look in the mirror, I hope no one ever wants to hurt you in the same manner. But ... I wouldn't drink that champagne just yet.

    "Sleeping Kitten - Dancing Dog!"
    1. MadameX
Theresa, a "great lady" would not be jeopardizing the national election to reel out her delegates inch by inch and make sure the world knows how much power she wields up the last minute.
    2. timethief
      I agree with Madame X.
    3. Theresa111
Without getting into a debate, I would say that not only is she expected to be there and speak, Obama needs her support, which she has given to him. I will say though that I hope he didn't make a major mistake not having her be his running mate. And yes, she is a great lady. We need more of them these days.
    4. MadameX
How is she giving Obama her support by keeping a stranglehold on her delegates until the last possible second?
    5. freeatlast
When you consider how ridiculously close the primaries were, I have NO problem with her delegates being hard-core about her... or wanting to be seriously impressed by BO before they swung their support his way. I don't think he has seriously impressed many of her delegates... not to the degree that they would like to be impressed... though most will come around. It is not as much her having a stranglehold on her delegates, as them not being willing to entirely abandon her as a superior candidate.
    6. legbamel
Where the heck else are they going to swing it? To McCain, at the DNC? The ship has sailed, people. Get off of the dock.
  2. DrowseyMonkey
lol ... wow that's dramatic, rightcommentary. It's not like her life is over or something. People should vote for the party, not the person. I guess I don't get that because that's the way our system is. But ... people seemed to be too invested in the individual and forgot about the party.
    1. cooper
I actually do not agree on voting the party at all, especially in the case of the two parties we have here. I wouldn't be affiliated at all if in this state you were allowed to vote primaries with no party affiliation. I happen to prefer Obama so I will vote the party. That having been said I am looking forward to her speech despite the fact I never wanted her to be president.

what "et tu Hilary" means? "es tu Hilary"? (are you Hilary?)
    1. aningeniousname
      It's Latin not French.
    2. MadameX
      And it's a literary reference.
    3. kdawg68
it's from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. When Caesar sees his trusted friend Brutus among the conspirators executing him, he says:

      "Et tu, Brute?" then falls.

The idea being "you too, Brutus?" as if questioning the betrayal.

      But...

Like all things supposedly based in history, there are varying accounts of what was actually said, and a more close translation may be "you too shall taste power" (or something like that), as if telling Brutus that he will die the same way.

As a side note, Brutus committed suicide after losing to the combined forces of Octavian and Marc Antony at the battles of Philippi. Philippi is endlessly fascinating as it's one of those moments where history turns on a dime. Brutus originally bested Octavian there, but his allies were routed by Antony, who combined forces with Octavian to destroy Brutus' command. He later fled into the woods and fell upon his sword.

Edit: As this is a political discussion, it's improtant to note that, if I remember correctly, the phrase

"sic semper tyrranis" (thus always to tyrants)

is attributed to Brutus. This of course is the state motto of Virginia, and was uttered by one John Wilkes Booth after shooting a certain Mr. Abraham Lincoln.
    4. aningeniousname
I think you're right Kdawg, et tu brute was a nice bit of creative writing from Mr Shakespeare rather than an historical utterance from a dying tyrant. I believe his actual words were "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!"
    5. kdawg68
I've always enjoyed giving Julius a british accent in my mind. He's approached by the mob, and comments:

'ey, what are these buggers on about then?

Note: there may or may not be an Eric Idle type asking for a shilling for an ex-leper in the background of my scene. Haven't settled on it yet.
    6. aningeniousname
This here is the actual "Zapruder" film of Caesars gruesome death.

Hillary is done... unfortunately for her. I disagree with DrowseyMonkey. Tonight's speech for her is the same as Kennedy's in 1968 - it's the end of her chances ever becoming President.

It may have been fate - or a premonition by Kennedy - to have gotten behind Obama so quickly. Perhaps having been the guy on the losing end of that battle - he figured it out faster than the rest of his party?

I don't know - just a bit of speculation perhaps...

Should Obama prevail - it would be suicide for Clinton to run against a sitting President in 2012. So she has to wait until 2016. By then... it's too late for Hillary Clinton.

Should Obama fail - the party is going to BLAME her... she didn't fight hard enough... she obstructed his chances...

... she'll be responsible. And the Clintons are then PNG'ed from the Democratic Party the way Nixon was after Watergate.

Tonight's speech is the last we'll see of Hillary Clinton the "Presidential Candidate".

... she will be relegated to the same fate as Kennedy - the liberal vanguard in the Senate. She'll get re-elected in NY as long as she wants to be a Senator. Perhaps some day - years from now - she'll get her chance to be Joe Biden and plucked from failed campaigns to be the VP candidate....

But she's done... just the same.

And I didn't think that Abba routine was all that nasty. I mean - I'm not kidding - this is Shakespearian tragic.... or like a Greek tragedy. If a year ago you would have told me that the guy who had served less than 200 days in the Senate, with no organization, and no bona fides, would be the DNC Nominee and overcome a well financed, well placed, and robust organization such as Hillary's... I'd' have said you were insane....

... it's going to be painful to watch ...

Obama picking Biden over her... if the polling is any indication... sealed Obama's fate. I think he loses any shot at Ohio... possibly Wisconsin... possibly Michigan... and Florida is no longer in contest...

If just 10% of the Hillary supporters vote for McCain (and the polling suggests as many as 50% may)... he will lose many of the "battleground" states that polled Democrat...

... look at the polls that are coming out in the last 24-48 hours... it's like watching a train wreck in slo-motion...

      No bump.

      Tied with McCain.

And losing ground in Ohio, New Mexico, Colorado, Virginia, and Michigan...

      ... wow.

That's why Hillary may have saved the Republican Party. I can't ever remember a DNC convention where polling went DOWN during the convention.

      ... it's truly amazing.
    8. DrowseyMonkey
right commentary - I just listened to the speech, I guess I was right, lol. According to Hillery, it's about the party & putting a democrat in the white house. It was a great speech.
    9. freeatlast
RC: True, as a hillary supporter, I'm very aware that regardless of what happens, Hillary will be blamed for the negative side of it. Not entirely convinced she will not be able to run again... yet to be seen.
  4. timethief
    oops! wrong placement
  5. polybore
Hillary is just working out how she can be President 4 and a bit years from now. Now there is an incentive for Obama, should he be elected, not to drop the ball.
  6. harleyblues
    Uncle Sam?

I know you are not trying to be mean but the entire Democratic Party has used Hillary Clinton as a Puppeteer!~ reasons I have stated in past posts now she wil attempt to reel her faithful supporters to vote for someone they donot want to vote for.. These are the nuts & Bolts..

I know she will nock one outta the park!~ In just a few mere minutes bless her heart!

You can lead the voter to the polls...

... but you can't make them pull the lever.

I think McCain has figured out how to tap that anger. Oddly enough - it's the fact that McCain's policies and positions appeal to Hillary's people that may actually get him elected....

... although as Carville said.... "You know what we call the guy who's waiting for people who never voted for him before to carry him to victory..... THE LOSER."

May be the only time I've agreed with the ragin' cajun'.
    2. MVT5150
"it's the fact that McCain's policies and positions appeal to Hillary's people that may actually get him elected"
There is no base for that fact at all!!! The fact is that McCain's positions are nothing like Hillary's. They differ on, Woman's Right to choose, health care, alternative energy, Social Security, Iraq, Taxes. Need I go on?
I'll give that some might vote for McCain because of bitterness of losing but not because McCain's policies and positions appeal to us. BTW, I am an avid supporter of Hillary and was a Hillary delegate for my county in the state of Colorado. I will also vote for Obama, come November!

    Drowsey:

That speech could have been given if Kermit the Frog was the nominee... it was the standard Democrat stump speech. Chicken in every pot. Republicans are evil... yeah yeah...

Good delivery tho... most energizing of the convention thus far.... but the bottom line... she did the minimum for Obama.
    1. DrowseyMonkey
Can't wait to hear the standard republican feedback ... oh wait...lol

Also can't wait to hear all the standard republican speeches at their convention.

Just wondering when conservatives are gonna talk about their own man. Their obsession with the talented pool of Democrats seems a little unhealthy if you ask me.

Little Red Dog ... Don't worry too much they have The Manchurian Candidate on their side!
  11. clioandme
Clinton did what she had to and then some. We Democrats are lucky to have her in the Senate. So is the rest of America.
    1. Theresa111
      I count myself lucky.
    2. MVT5150
She was great tonight and like what Carville said, "it's a good night to be a Democrat."
    3. harleyblues
that is a nice comment Stoneman.. but youu wouldn't like to see her in the White House?
  12. clioandme
Here's the speech, if any of you want to listen or read: www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=94003143 Since it's audio, slow internet connections can handle it too.
    1. floyd101
Thanks for the link, I saw it live but want to hear it again, one of the best speeches I have heard so far.

Hillary did what she had to do and she did it with greatness and I commend her fight for health care for all Americans and commend her fight for women.

Oh my my my my my...

So after Obama slams the Palin choice... what does Hillary say?

“We should all be proud of Governor Sarah Palin’s historic nomination, and I congratulate her and Senator McCain,” she says. “While their policies would take America in the wrong direction, Governor Palin will add an important new voice to the debate.”

Ex-Clinton Communications Director Howard Wolfson blogs that, with the Palin pick, “you are going to have a lot of women voters wondering why Senator Obama didn’t tap Senator Clinton as his running mate.”

It's the Brutus that keeps on STABBIN!

VOTE FOR CANDIDATE Y! CANDIDATE Y!

LOL! The Clinton's are too much... truly!
  15. saraho
IMHO, if Hillary Clinton was so truly fascinated by politics and wanting to shape the nation as a politician, she would have entered the field a bit earlier than at age 54. Don't you think?

The fact is that Hillary only ran for office after Bill was out of office.

In this way, her run for the White House seems more reminiscent of Lurleen Wallace than Harriet Tubman. When George Wallace was prevented from running for Governor of Alabama again, his wife ran in his place.

When you plan out this sort of initiative for years, and find it unexpectedly doused by an upstart named Obama, well, you would be angry too.
