Hey,
Since all of us are bloggers here, I thought it would have occurred to many - Writing a book.
What are the most interesting ideas for writing a book on?

consider self publishing it first and working it yourself to get some exposure then submit it to a publisher. Often a bit of a track record & exposure will help your chances. At least that is what many have suggested to me as a first time author.

That's generally not a good idea. Depending on the type of book and the market, self-publishing can be very profitable. That's usually not the case for fiction. It's also generally not the case if you don't have a lot of time to market the book yourself or money to hire someone to do it, and a solid marketing plan. If you have all that, you might view self-publishing as an alternative to mainstream publishing, not a stepping stone. While there have been a few well-known books that were self-published first and did so well that they were picked up by mainstream publishers (The Celestine Prophecy, for instance), those stories are well known precisely because the occurrence is so very rare.

I'm 330 pages into the novel I'm writing. Some days it goes well, and it makes me feel like, "Yep, this is the right thing to be doing," and other days I really struggle to make it work.
But it's always an interesting challenge.
I'm nearing the end now and I think I'll be a little sad when it's over. Writing on it has been a part of my life for quite a while now. -
I finished writing my memoir about 6 months ago--and I have just finished my first round of major edits. It still needs a little work.

I have a kid's story www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaYE88TmEoQ I'm just waiting for my mom to make new Illustrations.

I'm slowly, very slowly, compiling a book of my aphorisms. But I find it's a lot simpler and more fun posting them on the web. The whole publishing rigamarolle really turns me off.

I had been collecting ideas and putting together bits & pieces for a few books for years. Last year I wrote my first book and finished it early this year then self published it just a couple months ago. It is an arduous process when doing it completely yourself but also rewarding at the same time. Self publishing has it's advantages and disadvantages but for a newbie in that realm, it is not a bad way to go if you have time to work on promoting it yourself. BTW - you can take a peek by clicking on the preview on my blog. or here.

My husband's an author (actually JUST had another book come out the other day,) so I leave that to him.

I have written a draft of "war stories" from the courtroom from my jury trials as a prosecutor (and defense attorney). But I haven't taken the time to polish it up...and I haven't decided yet whether or not to "fictionalize" it....Does anyone know if such a book about jury trials would stand a better chance as "true crime-memoirs" or as fiction?

I started a book fifteen days ago. I did the research and there's nothing out there that covers the subject for the target market. I have done at least preliminary fact-gathering on half of it, developed a marketing plan, started to involve the community, a translator offered to do a translation for a small percentage of book sales, and now I have people from all over wanting to make sure their information is in it--so it must be a book whose time has come!
Next is the meetings with community leaders to develop a writing strategy, then the second go-round of fact gathering, meetings with library acquisitions directors, and then the actual writing. I thought originally I was going to be finished by Thanksgiving, but I think I'll have to set a goal farther out as this project is a lot bigger than I anticipated.
The good news is that I can write the book for a different market, include excluded material, and because of the fact that I have written a previous book on the subject, people are bound to take me more seriously the second time. (Not that they're not taking me seriously now, thanks in large part to the credibility of my blog.

I've certainly attempted starting novels, but for one reason or another I can never write more than a few chapters. I get a new idea and abandon my old project. Pathetic, eh?

It's that internet disease.."lackoffocus syndrome" from too much surfing & not enough real reading or focus. ( kidding of course ) I bet you have some great stuff and if you just dig in and crank it out you will be surprised. Worry about the edits and corrections later. Maybe do a short length novel or story book.

I use lulu.com to self publish my books.

Like TonyC, I wrote the book first - but it isn't the basis for my blog, and it isn't the only book I've written.
Started out wanting to be the next bestselling novelist. My novel got published (a few years ago now), and I think so far it's sold around 50 copies. Kinda hard to make a living with that sort of return.
Geekchick's got the right idea for a non-fiction book. I've written a couple of them as well, and yes, I'm going to self-publish. Helps that I'm associated with an e-book publishing company (nimblewords.com) that specialises in the type of thing I've written (and the type of thing Geekchick's talking about).
As for what the most interesting idea for writing a book might be - what are you blogging about? Do you have a good following? Then what's stopping you? Go nuts!
If you do it right, it's one absolutely amazing way to monetize your blog. -
Writing a book is so easy I have written about ten books. All one has to do is keep a record of whatever you write. My latest book is a compilation of the articles from my blogs. The next hurdle used to be cost, but not anymore.
Since the come about of "Print on demand" you can get a book published and be available on Amazon, borders, Barnes& Nobles, etc. for less than $50 bucks. I used this company called Createspace. Cost me $39.00 and I’m on all of the major book sellers list. -
I'm writing a book - Mystery/Murder/Bribery/Shooting/Police Chase/ Only one person has been eaten so far/Adventure Type NY Times bestseller. Daily I write a blog about how it's going. Got the skeleton built, now adding flesh - description, atmosphere, excitment, dropping bombs here and there of conflict! We discuss writing in general. Tear apart what I've done. Come visit! Thanks.

I'd love to write a book, on a couple of subjects, mostly one on life stories, and maybe one on dreams or well, lots of ideas, but way too much fatigue. I started a blog simply because I like to write and writing a book, even though I get that really strong gut feeling that says I should, seems such a far away idea for me.
-
A lot of people here have said that they'd love to write a book, not realizing, that as blog writers, they are already writing books. Albeit, books in an online realm.
-
Hi aspotofblog-- you are right I think. We are writing books, I guess, but would be nice to do some hard copy publishing and I would like to earn some money-- I'd leave my son the money (lol) 'cause he probably would find my writing boring. I don't feel like a,"blogger," as much as I do a writer with a blog, esp., b/c I am not too good on a computer.
