Hey,

Since all of us are bloggers here, I thought it would have occurred to many - Writing a book.

What are the most interesting ideas for writing a book on?

I have just began blogging but I have been working on a book for several years know but my book is one of quotes of which takes time and patients. If you do it though it will be a joy when accomplished.

I have done...written a novel. Now trying to get it published.

(PS - the latter part isn't fun)
    1. minalthukral
wow...that is inspiring. I am writing one though I think my co-author has some connections to manage the latter part.

It's just that sometimes I get so stuck with the storyline

consider self publishing it first and working it yourself to get some exposure then submit it to a publisher. Often a bit of a track record & exposure will help your chances. At least that is what many have suggested to me as a first time author.

That's generally not a good idea. Depending on the type of book and the market, self-publishing can be very profitable. That's usually not the case for fiction. It's also generally not the case if you don't have a lot of time to market the book yourself or money to hire someone to do it, and a solid marketing plan. If you have all that, you might view self-publishing as an alternative to mainstream publishing, not a stepping stone. While there have been a few well-known books that were self-published first and did so well that they were picked up by mainstream publishers (The Celestine Prophecy, for instance), those stories are well known precisely because the occurrence is so very rare.
    4. tcinvestor
Yea. That is why I opted for self publishing. I'm content to work it myself and the rewards are somewhat greater at this point. Thanks for that feedback.

      @tc

Self-publishing is suicide if you want to be a serious author of fiction. I teach this subject at my university; trust me on this, it's better to leave the book in a box somewhere and wait for an appropriate time than to self publish. Don't do it.

I have been approached twice for the story of my mom, tried once, got too busy. Maybe someday
    1. minalthukral
Is the story of your mom very fascinating?
    2. ArsenicCookies
very. It has all of the makings of a lifetime movie meets law and order
    3. tcinvestor
Don't miss a calling. Great opportunities often pass us by if we don't venture along when presented with a path. Go for it.
    4. ArsenicCookies
meh, seems a bit daunting for my tastes
  4. footiam
That's a good idea but is sounds like a very tiring job!

  7. m2urray
A few times. I even took a correspondence course on novel writing but I could not keep up the interest and flagged it away.
  8. ThriftShopRomantic
I'm 330 pages into the novel I'm writing. Some days it goes well, and it makes me feel like, "Yep, this is the right thing to be doing," and other days I really struggle to make it work.

But it's always an interesting challenge.

I'm nearing the end now and I think I'll be a little sad when it's over. Writing on it has been a part of my life for quite a while now.

I am thinking of writing a book or a few. Not quite ready yet, but its coming.
  10. meridance
I'm always thinking of writing a book, unfortunately, life keeps getting in the way...maybe 2010?
  11. melindaville
I finished writing my memoir about 6 months ago--and I have just finished my first round of major edits. It still needs a little work.
    1. ArsenicCookies
that is one that I would buy

Oh I'm writing two stories, hopefully it ends up in books! But with my thesis getting so busy, I don't write that often now, but still I'm writing! One is an adventure story and the other one is a real chicklit ^_^
  14. wehireu
I have thought occassionally of writing a science fiction novel.
  15. Shiley
I have a kid's story www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaYE88TmEoQ I'm just waiting for my mom to make new Illustrations.
  16. jafabrit
I have been told I should and I have pondered it, but it may take me a while to get around to exploring it, not interested in self publish, so I have to research it quite a bit before I even try to start.
  17. nothingprofound
I'm slowly, very slowly, compiling a book of my aphorisms. But I find it's a lot simpler and more fun posting them on the web. The whole publishing rigamarolle really turns me off.
    1. agapelife
      @nothingprofound
That was my thought too and that is why I went the self-publishing route and I'm glad I did. It is very empowering, whereas the other route might have been rather dis-empowering.

Taking your niche from "mastered skills" you've learned & writing a book for others to understand your unique craft. My book will eventually be about real estate, once I start the draft in my journals. Right now writing the book is on my least priority list.
  19. AndyRD
I've thought about it, and I do have some ideas, but I don't think my writing is quite there yet.
  20. merja
I've just taken a year off to actually finish one of my book ideas. the problem is that I've gotten so involved with my blog I'm not sure I'll have time for the novel of the decade.
  21. tcinvestor
I had been collecting ideas and putting together bits & pieces for a few books for years. Last year I wrote my first book and finished it early this year then self published it just a couple months ago. It is an arduous process when doing it completely yourself but also rewarding at the same time. Self publishing has it's advantages and disadvantages but for a newbie in that realm, it is not a bad way to go if you have time to work on promoting it yourself. BTW - you can take a peek by clicking on the preview on my blog. or here.

    I think about it everyday
    1. tcinvestor
Time for thought to turn into action. Just getting started is the hardest part. Once you get rolling it just starts cruising. Leave it from time to time if you have to to get fresh. Start tonight. Why not.
  23. HallucinatingHeavn
I have plenty of starts. It's the finishing I can't seem to master lol
    1. tcinvestor
LOL..well, in that case...buckle up and crunch it.. ;-)
  24. LGramlich
My husband's an author (actually JUST had another book come out the other day,) so I leave that to him.
    1. trailofpen
      You go girl!
  25. trailofpen
I thought about writing a book, but someone already wrote the Bible.
    1. fullet
LOL! But we still can write one of those unauthentic stories that cropped up after the Bible.
  26. minalthukral
Can someone elaborate the advantages of self publishing...except for the fact that you wouldn't have to look for a publisher? I am just trying to weigh my options here
  27. marketborn
    still thinking
  28. davedol
I will be writing a book. One of the reasons I started my blog was for it to eventually become a platform to promote my work. I believe having a blog will help with getting your work published.

I have written a draft of "war stories" from the courtroom from my jury trials as a prosecutor (and defense attorney). But I haven't taken the time to polish it up...and I haven't decided yet whether or not to "fictionalize" it....Does anyone know if such a book about jury trials would stand a better chance as "true crime-memoirs" or as fiction?
    1. minalthukral
I would think "true crime memoirs" should stand a much better chance and should get more popular with the media as well. It will automatically get sensationalised since I am sure some of the cases will be very dreadful as well
    2. spindiva
Personally, I like to read both fiction and true-crime. Much of that depends on the writer and his/her ability to keep it as real as possible even in a fictional story. I have to be able to feel the drama and get in the head of the criminal and the victims as well.
    3. rgoolsby
Thanks for the advice, Spindiva and Minalthukral. I believe both of you could produce fine books!
  30. geekchick
I started a book fifteen days ago. I did the research and there's nothing out there that covers the subject for the target market. I have done at least preliminary fact-gathering on half of it, developed a marketing plan, started to involve the community, a translator offered to do a translation for a small percentage of book sales, and now I have people from all over wanting to make sure their information is in it--so it must be a book whose time has come!

Next is the meetings with community leaders to develop a writing strategy, then the second go-round of fact gathering, meetings with library acquisitions directors, and then the actual writing. I thought originally I was going to be finished by Thanksgiving, but I think I'll have to set a goal farther out as this project is a lot bigger than I anticipated.

The good news is that I can write the book for a different market, include excluded material, and because of the fact that I have written a previous book on the subject, people are bound to take me more seriously the second time. (Not that they're not taking me seriously now, thanks in large part to the credibility of my blog.
  31. Rainhat
I started a book once. I wrote about 200 pages, then realized that I was just regurgitating what others had already written better, so I threw it out.
  32. spindiva
I hope to write a book someday. I think about it often and keep a journal of ideas for future use. I hope one day when I can actually focus on what I want and not the next nap or diaper change, my dreams will come true. As for ideas...I don't know yet where I will end up. Only time will tell.
  33. cocoadork
I've certainly attempted starting novels, but for one reason or another I can never write more than a few chapters. I get a new idea and abandon my old project. Pathetic, eh?
    1. tcinvestor
It's that internet disease.."lackoffocus syndrome" from too much surfing & not enough real reading or focus. ( kidding of course ) I bet you have some great stuff and if you just dig in and crank it out you will be surprised. Worry about the edits and corrections later. Maybe do a short length novel or story book.
  34. Shuttercraft
I use lulu.com to self publish my books.
  35. TonyC
I guess that I did the opposite of most bloggers. I pretty much wrote the book first. Then learned to blog second, with stories from my book. Which made blogging a little easier I think.
  36. BrianPhillips
Like TonyC, I wrote the book first - but it isn't the basis for my blog, and it isn't the only book I've written.

Started out wanting to be the next bestselling novelist. My novel got published (a few years ago now), and I think so far it's sold around 50 copies. Kinda hard to make a living with that sort of return.

Geekchick's got the right idea for a non-fiction book. I've written a couple of them as well, and yes, I'm going to self-publish. Helps that I'm associated with an e-book publishing company (nimblewords.com) that specialises in the type of thing I've written (and the type of thing Geekchick's talking about).

As for what the most interesting idea for writing a book might be - what are you blogging about? Do you have a good following? Then what's stopping you? Go nuts!

If you do it right, it's one absolutely amazing way to monetize your blog.
  37. pinkmonkeychatter
In the works!! Thinking of offering it as an e-book on my website.
  38. brianomaracroft
I've been on here very little today because I've been working through the first round of edits from my publisher. My collection of humorous essays comes out in June, 2010. My blog (Lost in the Hive) shares the title of the book.
  39. FredSr2009
Writing a book is so easy I have written about ten books. All one has to do is keep a record of whatever you write. My latest book is a compilation of the articles from my blogs. The next hurdle used to be cost, but not anymore.

Since the come about of "Print on demand" you can get a book published and be available on Amazon, borders, Barnes& Nobles, etc. for less than $50 bucks. I used this company called Createspace. Cost me $39.00 and I’m on all of the major book sellers list.
    1. dogkisses
--Fred-- wow! nice! I just posted on how it seems so unattainable to me to write a book. But then you say it is easy. I have a stack of articles I've written on hidden disability. Maybe I just need to take a computer course.
  40. AnastasiaFB
I intend to turn my present research on Stuart England into a book as soon as I am finished.
  41. Corny
I'm writing a book - Mystery/Murder/Bribery/Shooting/Police Chase/ Only one person has been eaten so far/Adventure Type NY Times bestseller. Daily I write a blog about how it's going. Got the skeleton built, now adding flesh - description, atmosphere, excitment, dropping bombs here and there of conflict! We discuss writing in general. Tear apart what I've done. Come visit! Thanks.
  42. dogkisses
I'd love to write a book, on a couple of subjects, mostly one on life stories, and maybe one on dreams or well, lots of ideas, but way too much fatigue. I started a blog simply because I like to write and writing a book, even though I get that really strong gut feeling that says I should, seems such a far away idea for me.
  43. aspotofblog
A lot of people here have said that they'd love to write a book, not realizing, that as blog writers, they are already writing books. Albeit, books in an online realm.
    1. dogkisses
Hi aspotofblog-- you are right I think. We are writing books, I guess, but would be nice to do some hard copy publishing and I would like to earn some money-- I'd leave my son the money (lol) 'cause he probably would find my writing boring. I don't feel like a,"blogger," as much as I do a writer with a blog, esp., b/c I am not too good on a computer.
  44. newblogmogul
Never thought of writing a book but I would like to publish a magazine.
  45. HollytheHousewife
Yesss!!! I want to write a book. Not really for publishment, but more for acomplishment...and I want to leave it for my girls, and there girls...and so on
  46. alivasim
Yes i have completed one book rcntly...in total have written two books...not for the publishing purpose...just loves to write what goes around...
