i wouldn't damage someone else's confidence that way ... so i refuse to help anyone learn to drive. they deserve better!

Oh yea you get that "tingly" feeling in your stomach with the teens. I know first hand!

Oh wow. No, I haven't. But I REMEMBER being that teen my mother tried to teach. I scared the bejeebers out of her a number of times. Eventually, I ended up paying for lessons. (And had to put back all the bejeebers... )

Yesterday, I let my son drive the car at the Safari. He was only responsible for the wheel and I pushed the pedals. He was OK.

p.s. He is four years old.

      Haha that is very cute.

I think the fleeing zebras would disagree.

Oh yes I have! I taught a friend of mine - and believe me you it's much harder to teach a pseudo adult who has developed fears and is already stubborn and doesn't like to be told what to than it is to teach a teenager!

(I helped teach my brother when he was a teen too...)

    It was fun though...

      Wish you lived closer!

Buy me a ticket, I'll come out there and teach your kiddo to drive, and play with bears...

      It'll be a rip-roaring good time!

Just remember this much, the more nervous you are (air braking, grabbing the oh-shit handles, gasping, pointing excitedly) will only make him more nervous. And thats not good!

Start out in a big, empty parking lot - or field. Fields are great for teaching how to really handle a car without all the risk (pulling donuts, swerving, fishtailing) then graduate to suburban roads with left hand signals at all intersections!

Or, pay someone else to teach him

exactly, anok ... that's why i won't teach anyone! i'd just totally undermine the new driver.

yes, and what I disaster (I learned I was not a good teacher YIKES). I was so nervous I made my daughter nervous and she crashed into the garage.Luckily we were both fine, but the car needed a new door.

      That would be not fun.

It is much more nerve-wracking than I thought it would be, but then again I am not the best passenger even with a good driver behind the wheel!

I think I will be letting hubby teach all the children to drive and I will stay home and worry hehe.

Yeah, I teached my son to drive. Now he drives as sucky as I do. I should of paid for an instructor I have zero patience (plus I learned to drive in japan and I still suck at driving in the states)

Make sure the kid doesn't hit any livestock.
    1. offendedblogger
Yes, because here it is free range and if you hit a cow you have to pay for it!!

      They are not cheap, either.

I taught 2 of my children how to drive a 'standard'...LOOK OUT!

I wish! I have a phobia of driving.

Today it should be a lot easier. When I was a kid we didn't have simulators. Teenagers today start out on video games and should have many hours of experience when they finally get behind the wheel.

You mean like every woman I encounter on the road?

    Just kidding! Mwahahahahahaha!

My next post shall be dedicated to you and your "women drivers" comments...oh just wait!

Kdawg, might I suggest a piece I wrote years ago on why women are backseat drivers? It was originally published in the Birmingham News newspaper, but later I added to my Associated Content material.

Very nice post April. I was only kidding with my comment. In fact, I'm probably more of a backseat driver than my wife is. I always think someone should be driving faster or taking a different route.

Never! I hate teaching, I just don't have the patience.

    yesssss
but hopfully you are teaching on an automatic
because I learned on a stick and that was freaken hard!!
  15. suburbqueen
No yet, but I can say that I think over half the population could stand to repeat driving school.

Hahaha... I taught two of my friends and both of them crashed their car. One on a climb and the other one on a curve... Guess I’m suck at teaching how to drive a car.
  17. nedekcir
yes i/we (hub and I) do, i don't like it. You will need a craw bar to get me out of the car the first time. It was scary (nail biting and whew emoticon added) lol

Once a friend's mom asked me to help teach as she kept shouting at her daughter instead of instructing. Wrong choice, as it ended up with both of us shouting at her daughter (the mom insisted on sitting at the back, otherwise it would've been me alone lol)
