I hope nobody is still on dialup, what's your connection speed? You can check your internet speed here speakeasy.net/speedtest/

I also have a great deal for DSL high speed internet for only $14.95 a month on my site if you want to "pump up the volume" on your web speed. blog.shopping4coupons.com/2008/09/30/act-now-to-get-dsl-for-the-price-of-di...

We're paying for Wildblue's "lightning fast," highest speed internet, which runs about the same as a 33K dialup modem...okay, okay...maybe a 56K on a good day. Am considering switching to BellSouth.

      From www.testmy.net, fyi;
      Download: 1089 Kbps or 1.09 Mbps (133 kB/s)
      Upload: 174 Kbps or 0.2 Mbps (21 kB/s)
(Admittedly, it's running relatively "fast" right this second.)

FWIW the majority of those surfing the internet are on dial up service. I am on high speed service & speed is not an issue for me.
Download Speed: 2631 kbps (328.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 691 kbps (86.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

DSL over fiber-optic line to MPOE of my house...running off an OC-192 at work. Speed is not an issue for me.

I have DSL. Oddly enough it is cheaper than dial-up these days, dial-up modems are more expensive than the DSL ones to which was a surprise in many ways when I needed to replace mine for faxing. Right now I am on my laptop sitting in the yard and connected to one of the neighbors wireless connections they never bother to secure. I never use my own wireless because I don't want the information stored in it. In case it ever disappears finding my house would be pretty easy with it, so I don't do anything that would compromise my network.

    My fiber-optic cable totally smokes!

    Current test at dslreports.com:

    Download: 10,655 KBS
    Upload: 1,415 KBS

I agree that fiber optic cable totally smokes!

But dslreports.com is not something I trust, because it is not a complete diagnosis of your connection. It is only accurate to the central office in your area, not to your prem. But since you are fiber optic, you are getting a closer guage as to copper wire.

My cable provider gave me a free modem; my download speed is 1000 and upload 100. I am thinking of switching to faster internet but only when I get a laptop as the same cable provider will give me wireless for free if I upgrade my internet and my broadband will just cost me about €30 per month (I pay €19.99 at the moment, which is not bad).
    1. bradhart
@sophielc You should be able to buy your own cable or DSL modem or a separate wireless router and go wireless with any company or product you choose.

Brad, from what I know and experienced in the recent pass, wireless technology is not as "across the board" in Europe as it is in USA.
    3. bradhart
she should still be able to buy a wireless netgear router and hook into it anywhere in her house assuming her cable modem has a standard network cable port.

I am on FIOS and it is F=A=S=T!

I love it. Welcome to 2008! Remember the days of dial-up? My God--I used to teach online classes with that and I can't believe how much patience I developed during those years
