Sir Almo, are you in Sydney in that red dust cloud?
    1. siralmo
nup but its heading up here to brisbane

the last one went from adelaide (in south australia) all the way to mackay (one of the red dots towards the top right)

I had no idea you were in Australia, but I guess the 14 hour time difference would explain why we Americans never get to talk to you.

What's causing the dust storm? Is it common?
    3. siralmo
its desert winds, when it gets dry

every couple of years one is big enough to make it to the coast

it seems this year they are plentiful

Global warming in action. Weather patterns are seriously messed up here too.
    5. siralmo
hahaha i don't think this is part of global warming, its just a set of north easterlys

this one is supposed to be a minor one, so i'm guessing it will be the last

I don't really understand the climate and environment in Australia. Is it winter there right now? Does it ever get really cold, or is it pretty much warm all year round?
    7. siralmo
      where i live, no

i wear a jumper maybe one week out of the year

it's spring atm so we are looking a temps between 20-30degC

sydney would be looking at something like 17-25degC

      adelaide and melbourne maybe 15-25degC

the desert could be anywhere between 0-40degC

As an American, Celsius actually means nothing to me, but I will look it up on Google to get an idea of what the climate is like over there.

Chicago's climate teeters between freezing, icy cold snow storms and blistering hot, humid summers. We have about a week of spring and a week of autumn.

This is why I am considering moving as it seems that most places in the country have more hospitable climate.

So, it's warm all year round. Sounds wonderful.
    9. siralmo
well yeah most of the time, warm sometimes hot, but there is plenty water around (haha inside joke)

      You wear one of these

      for a week every year?
      I thought blizzards were bad!

I visited boytrotters' blog and he had a link to terrifying images of the horrific red dust storm. It must have been awful to go through and I'm sorry to hear that there will be more. I'll return with the link.
Edit: Here's the trottersville post link

that's actually a way to show what it was like except i could see all of about 5m in front of me
    3. Stillthinking
That's incredible. It does look like another planet. Is it hard to breathe in a dust storm? Does it get on your skin?

(Some images are shared, it seems.)

      Grab your camera, siralmo!

hahaha that car is what my car looked like
    6. timethief
Yes, it was hard to breathe so people with respiratory conditions were told to stay indoors. After the storm all the red dust was everywhere as it penetrated into every nook and cranny. Everyone was trying to clean it up without stirring it up. From what I heard it was awesome to look at but absolutely GAWD awful to go through.

Global gifting in action. Actually, I don't know as much, but since these are the worst duststorms since the 1940s, I would most definitely not exclude it.

It looked so eerie in photos, but I can just imagine what havoc it wreaked on people's lungs!

Sydney hit by dust again - September 26, 2009

I drove through a dust storm once in Dallas-Fort Worth. Brown dust everywhere. It literally looked like the end of the world.

One thing is for sure, dust clouds are not healthy.

"The dusty blanket that wrapped itself around Sydney this morning pushed air pollution levels to 1500 times their normal levels (anything above 200 considered hazardous) - the highest on record, a climate scientist says."

"Chris Eiser, manager of atmospheric science at the department, said measurements taken in Sydney today showed the highest level of particle concentration on record."
