Raffaello Sanzio ("Raphael"), Alessandro Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Tiziano Vecellio ("Titian") and Michelangelo Buonarotti. Best artists in my opinion, and I've had a marvelous time crawling Europe to see and study their works in various museums.
My favorite works are:
- Venus of Urbino by Titian
- Virgin & Child with Saint Anne by da Vinci
- School of Athens by Raphael
- Primavera by Botticelli
- Pieta sculpture by Michelangelo in St. Peters in Rome
I've studied many eras of art, but only the Renaissance ever really pulled me in and prompted me to seek out museum pieces. I do like some Flemish artists, and I love Greek/Roman sculpture... but modern art... guess it just doesn't speak to me...;)

Vincent Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, Claude Monet, Da Vinci... Well, I think there are many popular names in that respect! With more and more ACCESS available these days, people (even less art enthusiasts) are aware of many names and their work!
Personally, Dali and Van Gogh are My favorites! Dali's "Persistence Of Memory" and Van Gogh's "Starry Night" hit the top spots in My list of World Paintings under various/different Categories though! Monet's "Lily"... Few more (some pals here already have used certain names that even I admire) and then, David Rosenbloom is the name that comes to Me over & over again. I love his paintings! -

Wow, great, thanks everyone - lots of useful contributions already!!
I am surprised by the amount of traditional art fans on here, a modern web blogging community, but thats kind of cool too. All art fans are welcome and i like to learn about tastes beyond my own. Each can teach us something new. I will check out David Rosenbloom too, who i am not familiar with yet...
Keep the comment coming!!... -
I would say any of the 17th century artists in the Netherlands, as in www.essentialvermeer.com/timelines/timeline.html. The paintings could be landscapes, still lifes, portraits or genre scenes. I'm less keen on the history/religious themes.
If I HAD to select a handful of special artist by name:
Rembrandt Van Rijn
Jacob van Ruisdael
Johannes Vermeer
Pieter de Hoogh
Pieter Claesz
Jacob van Ruisdael
Gabriel Metsu
Nicolas Maes
Gerard Dou
Jan Steen
Gerard Terborch
Ferdinand Bol
Emanuel de Witte
Judith Leyster
Frans Hals
Jan Lievens
