Favourite Romance novel??
I'm planning on making a start on my novel in the near future and would love to have a read of any romance novels you've read and enjoyed that I haven't picked up yet.

btw the essential ingredients of the book will be good news for the lactose intolerant as I aim to add:
Absolutely no cheese
a lot of depth
a lot of quick wit, humor.
If you could recommend any similar books that'd be great!-
What you describe here is not a romance novel. "Romance novel" is probably the most narrow and clearly defined genre remaining in an increasingly blurry industry, and romance novels do not have "a lot of depth". A book with a lot of depth that has a romance as the central theme is considered mainstream fiction.

Definately contemporary Sweet Violet.
Madame X there are many romance novels out there which are very "deep" and many which are of the trashy variety.
Ultimately the reaction of the reader defines whether a book has left a lasting mark. A book you or I may not find deep others will, and do.
According to your comment, "romance novels" can not have a strong, meaningful storyline which is where I disagree.
If a book has "a lot of depth", with the sole theme being "romance", how on earth can it not be described as a romance novel?

Well, some of Jude Devereaux's more recent works have been contemporary, but I don't consider them to be as good as her earlier works, which were historicals.
Diana Gabaldon has done some very good work, meticulously researched...but again, she writes historicals.
When I read romances, I tend to stay away from contemporaries because I haven't found them to be too light and fluffy for my taste. A well-researched historical, on the other hand, more readily grabs...and holds...my attention. -
contemporary.....no do a period piece I love learning something as I go,that's just me though. Another thing is there is no such thing as romance in modern day.
Chivalry is dead.
I don't mean no don't do that in a bad way,its your book,haha
I love nora roberts and catherine coulter, but they don't write cont. And yes they might get a liitle cheezy, but their is always take your breath away love scenes and usually good action too.-
Interesting, I will definately read some more historical from the authors recommended and even romantic suspense to get a balanced view.
I'm more of a mystery buff myself when it comes to reading, but for some reason I feel most comfortable writing more romantic short stories and poems. One of my poems can be found here:

The most recent romance novel I've read was 'Paradise', by Judith Mcnaught - A quite brilliant read.
