What's the greatest video game you've ever played? On any console, with any time frame.
My favorite? - 'The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time' on the n64.
An incredible storyline, unbelievable setting and characters, Intense battles, emotional relationships. Aesthetically beautiful (still is but especially for it's day). This game has it all.
More appropriate to call it an experience rather a game - it's just that good.

I have two, both for my Playstation 2.
#1: Final Fantasy VII (originally for the PSone. Intriuging story, wonderful music, great characters. Still playing this RPG
and I don't mind its retro graphics. It's the gameplay/experience that counts. It made me cry on two occasions.
#2: Jak 3. It'f fun fun fun! Jak 3 combines action, suspense, and lots and lots of humor. I can do so many things in this game; crouch, crawl, walk, run, roll, hide, kick, kick spin, punch, uppercut, aerial attack, shoot, SWIM, drive a vehicle, ride a "hover board," super-long jump, first-person point of view, drive dune buggies and flying cars, ride lizards, and the best part: after finishing the game, players can still continue to finish the extra tasks/missions and improves scores... and I shouldn't forget, players can watch their favorite scenes again. And I have a lot! Jak 3 has the best story for the Jak and Daxter series so far. -

This one is such a tough one to pick a single game because I feel like I would have to make a list of everything I've played, just to make sure nothing seeped out the head at some point in time, for whatever reason.
I'm going to be annoying and list several and hope I am forgiven =P
Silent Hill & Dino Crisis: I love, love, loved these games in the Survival Horror genre. The psychological aspect won me over easily (Silent Hill), I always wanted to know more and more about the place. I only enjoyed parts 1-3, however. The fourth was an interesting concept but as it drew closer to the end, for the first time ever, the game lost all it's scare factor and became dull. I never finished it because I was so disappointed.
Dino Crisis was a gem because it involved Dinosaurs! Ha, honestly, it kept me on my little toes, anticipating pop-ups. For some reason, T-Rex just has that natural fear inducing ability. Parts 2 and following just made me ill with disappointment again.
Final Fantasy VIII, X, Kingdom Hearts and Skies of Arcadia. I won't say why I adored each one individually but they all just hooked me in. Loved the characters, visuals, story, etc.
The Dig, Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max. Loved point and click adventures, spent many hours playing these. Also toonstruck! Ah that one was hilarious. Cartoon look made it all better.
Sims/Rollercoaster Tycoon 3. While not so much now, I hope to poke it again (part 3) one day as again, game just hooked me. Playing god is fun at times, watching the game drama as well lol.
Grand Theft Auto It does bore me after awhile but I love driving around in it and feeling like I'm in whatever city. The missions are always fun to do.
Those are the few that stand out I guess, although I have tons others that I've liked (Toe Jam and Earl original!). Sorry I gave like a few names over one =P-
I also never finished Silent Hill 4, but for different reasons. I never did find it scary ... although I found that the apartment thing was well done, with the way it changes throughout the game, and the hauntings. The game save ultimately got deleted somehow and I didn't feel like starting over
I did start playing the first one a month or so ago, for the first time ever, but stopped at the beginning in favor of other games. The atmosphere is very well done, with the haze and the limited lighting, but the controls (and some of the camera movements) are a bit ... meh. I'll have to get back to it eventually.
If you like survival horror, you absolutely must play any game in the Fatal Frame series. I couldn't finish Fatal Frame II, in great part because I had been creeped out by its mood and the ghostly appearances ... and because my brother sold the X-Box, dammit

Ah yeah, I played the first Fatal Frame. I did like it, it generated a good atmosphere as well and the picture thing did manage to increase the scare factor since there was no actual killing of them with the old trusty gun or knife. But for whatever reason, I lost interest after that first Fatal Frame.
As you said, the atmosphere is what brought me back to SH and not really knowing what to expect since it wasn't filled with cliche pop-up scares like Resident Evil (we all know the window's going to break, stop showing the weird angle! I still love RE though!).
I'm curious though, to poke some Fatal Frame series I've missed on my pc (big tv in two weeks woo!). I believe there was a second and a third, I'll have to go poke gamespot eventually. I loathe seeing reviews sometimes as it can unintentionally put you off a game because of one simple thing that may be said ;(
I'd still try it anyway but I sometimes find myself focusing on those few cons people may have mentioned on particular games. -
Fatal Frame II is the only one in the series that I've played. The only negative point I see is probably the character's running speed. Could be a little faster, but then the game would be too easy. But that's the one you should play if you like 19th century Japanese villages that are stuck in time after a failed ritual
I have yet to play Resident Evil 1 and 2. I played a bit of the fourth game, but the controls and the lack of horror mood didn't keep me interested. I prefer the cinematic angles of the earlier games instead of having the camera over the shoulder all the time (even though most won't agree). I wish they had kept the original concept for it, or at least the mood and the camera use (www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGRZwypXMFg). -
I didn't like the fourth one, although many did. For me, it wasn't Resident Evil at all. I loved the remake of the original on the cube. It was really attractive and well done. Resident Evil was always big on pop-up scares, also had angles and great lightning. For me, the fear factor came from knowing there were zombies somewhere, knowing that at any moment that window is breaking or something will happen once you pick up the shiny object. I guess preparing for what was to come was half the fun.
So annoyed that both RE4 and Re5 was such a dramatic change and a different type of game, which I would've liked if they weren't sporting the Resident Evil title :[ -
I know what you mean. All the reviews praised RE4, calling it a definite change for the better, but I guess I just don't see what they see.
At least the earlier games are still around, and playable. I haven't played the first one (or its remake), but Resident Evil 0 (GameCube) seemed to take the gameplay style to its limit.
I hope they revisit the old style (and plot) in one of the future games, but that's just wishful thinking, as they will likely "follow the money" and keep the series as it is now.
