I just started a series of blog postings on my favourite cover songs of all time. I was inspired by a choral rendition of Radiohead's "Creep" which sent chills up my spine.

(warning, they drop the f*bomb in this version)

I'm posting a new cover song every other day (today's is Tori Amos' version of a Nirvana song) but in the meantime...

What are YOUR favourite cover songs... any genre or style.

Gloria Jones' "Tainted love" just keeps getting better and better with every cover version. I loved the Soft Cell cover but Manson's also blew me away.

      Nice picks.

I'm addicted to cover songs. I love genre covers, like Me First and the Gimme Gimmes singing Leaving on a Jet Plane, standards like Mack the Knife, and just songs that people love to sing like Big Yellow Taxi. I've spent a fair amount of time talking about song versions on my lens and more making pages about them at www.squidoo.com/not-pop-lenses .

the band shudder to think did a great version of the old 70's hit "so into you" on their album "pony express record". it's a complete reinvention of the song.

Best cover ever is Eva Cassidy's "Somewhere over the rainbow", sends a shiver down my back every time.

Her version of Sting's "Fields of gold" is very good too.

      Very nice cover:

I always loved this version by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

Eva Cassidy's version is fantastic. I just got Jane Monheit's album "Take a Chance on Love" and she does a nice rendition, as well. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EP_5veYs1vE

Those are good versions too. Never heard them before.

The Cranberries "Go Your Own Way". Then again, Dolores O'Riordan can sing showtunes, and I'd be all about it.
  7. drjay1966
Husker Du's version of "Eight Miles High"--way better than the original.

    i like the acoustic "umbrella"
  9. rmaxwell142
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts "Crimson and Clover"

I like covers too: Kiss (Tom Jones) We Can Work It (Stevie Wonder)

Ruby Baby (Bjork) I'll Be Around (Joan Osborne)

With a Little Help From My Friends (Joe Cocker) Word Up (Korn) Eleanor Rigby (Ray Charles) Ode to Billy Joe (Sinead O'Conner)& Sheryl Crow does a version too. Just to name a few
    1. silverpeak
Of course the Tom Jones version of Kiss is one of those examples where the cover far exceeds the original. Good suggestions!!

Shirley Bassey covered Pink's Get the Party Started with more flair than the original, and a horn section to boot. not-pop-jukebox.blogspot.com/2008/11/get-party-started-shirley-bassey.html

Seal's new CD titled: "SOUL" covers some of the best all time classics, IMO
It was produced in partnership with David Foster. oooooo what a voice!! :o)

There is a John Denver cover of the Band song "The Weight" which was never released as a single but is freakin FANTASTIC. I'm not even that big of a John Denver fan but I would recommend it.

In concert I heard Blues Traveler do "Devil Went Down to Georgia"-- I don't think it's on CD anywhere, but it was a terrific cover.

If I were at home, I'd have another cover to post but I don't have it on this computer and I can't remember who it was. I'm going to have to see if anyone's posted the Blues Traveler cover, though. I bet it's fantastic.

Of course someone did! www.youtube.com/watch?v=l83dArJkQzs And the other cover was Primus (I should have known it would be there!) The video they have there of that one sucks though. How about the Muppets, instead? www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NAerTglk3U

Regarding your post, the innocence of their voices in contrast with the lyrics is remarkable - beautifully done.

I guess one of my favorites is "Mustang Sally", originally recorded by The Chamber Brothers (1965), has been covered by many artists (partial list):

    Wilson Pickett
    The Young Rascals
    Muddy Waters
    The Committments
    Eric Clapton
    Buddy Guy
    Bruce Springsteen

I did a blog post on this last Friday for Old School Friday. I think there are a lot of good covers but Buckley’s version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah is pretty grand.

This is a pretty nasty one I found last week while searchig for my post, and I was appalled to hysterics.

Paul Anka doing a cover of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit.

I think mine would have to be Chris Cornell's cover of 'Billie Jean.'
  24. salomey5
Agreed with first poster on Alien Ant Farm's Smooth Criminal.

    Marilyn Manson: Sweet Dreams

No Doubt: Come on Eileen (although some people told me it isn't actually No Doubt who sings it. I dunno. I don't care either. It's a great cover.)

Nirvana: "The man who sold the world"
I literally worship Bowie, but I find Nirvana's version to be way superior to the original.
  25. polybore
Just now Polybore likes this version of Dylans Tangled up in Blue by KT Tunstall

And this Cover of a Hot Chip song by Little Boots. Little Boots next big thing?
Nice use of the Tenorion there.

Oh oh, the best cover ever, so good that I had to dig up an old discussion...

Cradle of Filth's version of 'Hallowed Be Thy Name', it's so much better than the iron maiden version.

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iee8uf8FXYs
the idiot got the name wrong, but you can hear the cover perfectly. It's absolutely beautiful, despite the scratchy voice. Usually this band is pretty vile, but hats off to them on this cover
