I am fascinated by spiders, they are industrious in a laid back kind of way. I took a photograph this afternoon of a stripey little chap who'd made a huge web which was full of flies and leaves. He was chomping on what looked like a moth.

I like the Dung beetle because even though he has a shitty job you never hear him complaining about it.
His attitude is "This shit won't roll its self!" I like that.

You like any bug that will take your Sh*t.

Ant.....no other living organism on this planet is as strong as the ant!!!
    1. jadedconformist
The Rhinocerous beetle are stronger - they can live 850 X their weight.

"To put this into perspective, if a human of average height and weight had the strength of the rhinoceros beetle, it would be able to lift a 65 ton object"
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinoceros_beetle

Yes, ants rock. I used to watch them for hours as a kid. I
  4. myriadlife
I love grasshoppers too. I had a pet one for a whole day.
  5. SweetViolet
    Yuk! I detest insects!

But if I had to choose one, it would be the dragonfly. Not only are they beautiful, they eat mosquitoes, which I hate beyond reason.
  6. myriadlife
    Yeah mossies suck!
    1. SweetViolet
They suck my blood and leave huge itchy welts behind that take weeks to go away. The mosquito is one of the most useless creatures on the entire planet.
  7. thebigandyt
the mayfly, an amazing lifecycle, spends two years as a nymph grubbing about underwater then has one sex filled day flying about and then dies
  8. DiggaDominus
Carpenter Ants: they're Black, work hard together, live by the example of Jesus (woodworking) and love their fat Mama.

    this thread is funny

I hear crickets are delicious. My daughter had a lollipop with a cricket in it.
    1. rainforestrobin
      Your daughter's cool!
    2. ekim941
      Because she ate a bug?

I like ladybugs (the real ones, not those orangy things that are now passing for ladybugs but bite), crickets, and dragonflies. My sister is really partial to locusts. My mom likes those little roly-poly things that curl up in a ball when they get scared. I mention all this because when it came up a few years ago (right after my sister randomly said, "Locusts are my favorite bug", I was very surprised to learn that almost everyone I knew HAD a favorite insect.
    1. ekim941
I don't have any recipes for a pill bug.
    2. MadameX
Well, thank God for small favors.
    3. rainforestrobin
Oooh ya, Lady Bugs are so cool because they eat all the bugs that eat my garden. So if your garden is really healthy it will have tons of lady bugs.

And cricket are probably my favorite and lightning bugs on a hot summer's night.
    4. ekim941
In other words, Robin likes all the bugs.
  13. wehireu
I rather like crickets, ladybugs, fireflies, and praying mantises.
  14. aningeniousname
I like cricket and I like Buddy holly and crickets.

I love Mosquitoes because they hardly do me any harm
  16. ranist22
None really though I love to photograph them. Imagine a forest without insects!
  17. AngieA
    None!
    They just bug me.
  18. timethief
Even though I allergic to mosquito saliva and swell horribly, and even though I am so violently allergic to yellow jacket wasp stings that I must inject epinephrine or stop breathing, I would not want to live in a world that lacks insects. My favorites are ants, dragonflies, fireflies and butterflies.
  19. TheRiverWanders
Dragonflies - any size, any coloration.
  20. LGramlich
I like spiders, too, although I probably lean toward butterflies (they're just so pretty!)
Some shots of our local spiders here; lucidflora.blogspot.com/2008/09/1st-hike-of-autumn-2008.html

Ugh! Spiders are horrifying. I seem to get spider bites in my sleep...on my face! We have some horrifying spiders here in South Africa and I do NOT want them in my house!

I have my house sprayed twice a year to keep the bugs out of it. I don't care if they live in my garden, but they must stay out of my house!
    2. myriadlife
Hey I love your spider shots. They are fun to photo.

caterpillar, the only bug I'd let crawl on me
  23. Hangingonahyphen
Spiders are not insects. They are arachnids. They have eight legs, and the structure of their body (the thorax and abdomen) is not that of insects... Anyway, my favorite insect is the preying mantis... It's flesh-eater, it doesn't spread germs and it doesn't smell...
    1. inmyredhead
Hmm, then maybe this thread should be titled 'What is your favorite Bug? Though insects they may not technically be, they are still considered bugs, lol.

And I WAS going to say Praying (with an 'A') Mantis, but not if they are 'flesh eaters'. I don't think ours around here do that, but no thanks if there is even an inkling of an iota of possibility they will eat my flesh. I'll pass. But they sure do have adorable little tilts of the head as though they are truly listening to your every word and contemplating what you are saying on a deeper level.
  24. myriadlife
Now you are being technical! But thanks for the lesson.
  25. chrissymarie321
Butterflies and bees...........I think are my favourite. I like the spider photograph but then I like photographs
  26. farangrakthai
Well, here we eat ants, ants eggs, water cockroaches, grasshoppers, bamboo worms, to name only the most popular...
    But no spider ( I Think ).
    My favourite, seafood...
  27. wakish
I'm fascinated by any type of insect actually.
But I'm impressed by bees because they:
    - have a great sense of coordination
    - they make honey which is not scientifically reproducible (so honey is amazingly unique)
    - they help other plants in pollination
    - they are very clean and hates dirty smells or environment

Well, bees are simply wonderfully amazing

Btw, I wrote an article on insects which hopefully you read here: wakish.info/insects-directly-linked-with-life-forms-on-earth/

I have to agree, roaches are creepy
  28. janizarzagon
    I like butterflies and cockroaches.
    1. myriadlife
Why do you like cockroaches, they are so creepy!
  29. calais50
beetles-they're so varied. My 6 yr old loves bugs, so I'm constantly helping him find bugs. We have found some extremely large and beautiful beetles in the mountains. He loves catching giant stag beetles that have the horn on their head. An added bonus, I don't have to worry about beetles biting or stinging.
  30. mizhelena
cutest would have to be the lady beetle and the freakiest the tranatula spider YIKKEES! but are spiders really insects? they have eight legs so maybe not.
    1. calais50
That's right. Spiders are "bugs" but not insects.
  31. myriadlife
Whatabout Daddy Longlegs? I always seem to get trapped in the shower with them.

    Ants. They're hard workers.
  35. Onchong
Damselflies, butterflies, especially the transparent butterflies!
  36. mjschindler
It used to be roly-polys (sp?). Now it would probably be a tie between jewel beetles and luna moths. I think insects are fascinating.
  37. JanelleV
    Butterflies -- they're so pretty.
  38. RecycleCindy
Lady bugs are very cool-looking and cute so they get my vote.
    1. MelissaB
I have to second the vote for lady bugs.. They are pretty darn cute! (and I can't say that about many other insects)
  39. lamenews
    praying mantis
