    2. singaporecaddy
Do you mean you hate shrimp in general since hipon is not a dish, but a crustacean?
    3. Onchong
      Do you hate lobster, too?
    4. snappysparrow

I bet you had chicken in soy sauce/vinegar - Adobo!
    3. tazzahall
Adobo is so tasty- the soy and vinegar just reduces into a really rich sauce
  5. helsing
try the classic adobo, and most of non-Filipino that I know, they liked pancit.
    1. Onchong
Pancit is a noodle dish very popular in the Philippines, but of Chinese origin.
  6. celticmusicfan
    Ok Kari-Kari, Adobo, Bicol Express...yum.
  7. wagerwitch
Pancit - lumpia - pancit bihon - chicken adobo - and just about everything else.

Where I live there is a very strong traditional Filipino Community.

And I often go to the parties - which are totally FAB!!!
    1. singaporecaddy
You must get them to do Kare-Kare and Crispy Pata for you!

My girlfriend who is Filipino loves Halo Halo, but I'm not too keen. Just keeps reminding me of the Beatles for some reason.
    1. Onchong
Here in Saudi, we do our own version of halu-halo. It's a very refreshing dessert.

My mum makes the best pancit! She uses lots of soy and fish sauce with prawns, sausage and beans. mmm...

Kwek-kwek is a street food. Made up of boiled duck or chicken egg coated with flour and deep fried. Favorite food of Super Inggo...

I just can't do the balut guys... Sorry - nothing personal - but I just can't... LMAO - one of my friends was slurping away one day and I was interested - cause I'll usually try ANYTHING... But then...

Well you can imagine... He still laughs at me every time we get together and makes fun of me.
    1. humanbeing1940
Balut is suppose to be a great aphrodisiac - will that change your mind?
    2. eatfoodrecipe
      me too! i hate BALUT>
    3. Onchong
If you don't like BALUT, you should try PENOY!
  13. marxxizm
Kwek kwek is a pika pika which means finger food. it is usually sold on streets. it is usually a chicken egg or a balut which is a duck egg. balut egg would cost more than the typical chicken egg. but more tasty. it is then dipped on a mixture of flour and water that has a color of orange. And then deep fried.
    1. eatfoodrecipe
I have not tried kwek2X. Have not eaten balut as well.
  14. marxxizm
But durian is more dreaded. I think the durian fruit is the most underrated fruit of all.
    1. singaporecaddy
Underrated? You mean berated? I love durian!
    2. eatfoodrecipe
durian rocks! i just love the taste.
  15. marxxizm
Yep and it still is an aphrodisiac. never changed.
  16. SweetViolet

    1. eatfoodrecipe

    5. eatfoodrecipe
it really looks like chocolate in the first place.>>HAHA
    6. trailofpen
That's the biggest lie on the planet!

I absolutely love Filipino food and learnt how to cook it. Most people love pansit. I cook it with chopped up bacon. Man it tastes good that way. I also like adobo, especially the dry kind, lungganisa and forget the name of the other one. Some one help me out with the name, it's when beef is cut into thin pieces and marinated in vinegar, Soya sauce etc for a few days then fried.
    1. eatfoodrecipe
@pandora - dont know the name for that one. hmm..still thinking.
    2. Onchong
      Beef tapa?

      Ingredients

18 oz of beef that is cut into very thin strips. Each strip is to be 4 to 5 inches long and up to 2 to 3 inches wide.
4 cloves of garlic that you have crushed
      6 tbsp of soy sauce
      2 tsp of salt
      1 tbsp of sugar
      6 tbsp of vinegar
      1/3 tsp of black pepper
    3. eatfoodrecipe
I'm not quite sure if its beef tapa...still looking the recipe here: lutongpinoyrecipe.info, pure text no image.. looking for the keyword beef tapa.
    4. Onchong
Well, I'm sure it's not tucino because it is prepared differently.
    5. pandora106
Tosino... That's what it is. I also add fish sauce and 7up. The 7up acts the same way as alcohol, making the beef more tender.
  19. Onchong
How about the Chinese tapa sold in many small stores in Ongpin and Divisoria. It tastes so good. I just love it.
  20. bettieblogger
I don't know what any of this is, but I did peek at a few recipe's on the site that "eatfood" recommended and some of it looks really good. I would give it a try

How refreshing! a thread about my very own culture...just reading this discussion, makes me homesick guys!
anyway, goes to show how pinoys are great not only with cooking but blogging as well. Hmmm- my fave dish would be Pinakbet with malunggay and patani (yum!!!!) paired with inihaw na Bonuan bangus. My mouth is starting to water...better head to our local Asian shop tomorrow and buy me'self some daing (LOL).
which pales in comparison to fresh fish, oh well, that would have to do...
    1. Onchong
... and have a picnic under a shady mango tree, bare hands eating from the spread of food on banana leaves on a long bamboo-made table... wowwwww... let's go home, i feel so homesick, too.

Kath, don't forget the "buto ng malunggay" when you do the pinakbet recipe again.

HABOL: please don't forget the ginayat na mangga with ginayat na sibuyas, kamatis... at bagoong!
  22. marxxizm
Who among you guys love HUMBA? Heheh...It is a little bit similar to adobo but there's a slight difference in the way it is cooked. And it originated I think in Cebu because a lot of Cebuanos are familiar to it. Dinuguan is also one of my faves, I prefer eating it with rice though.
    1. kath
@Marxxim- i love humba, i cook it with beer! and it's definitely a winner.
    2. Onchong
Are Humba and Pata Tim the same?
    3. eatfoodrecipe
      they are not the same..
  23. kath
Grabe na to... i won't be able to sleep now, thinking about all the local foods and the social context connected to it- as in friends and family! hmmm, bugger.
@Onchong- yep, definitely include the tomato- inihaw na talong and sibuyas, bagoong salsa...a must with bangus na inihaw
  24. Onchong
    How about BULALO?

    kolesterollll ngekkk!!!
    1. pandora106
What is bulalo? The one thing that I don't like is how fish is prepared, especially the smell of some of it like squid on the bbq.
    2. eatfoodrecipe
bulalo is great! produces lots of sweat..just like having an exercise.
  25. marxxizm
Bulalo is made with a gigantic cow bone. Boiled to maximum to extract the broth out of the bone. And the broth is what is making it delicious. It is better served during a rainy day or when the climate is cold. It will really get you sweating.
    1. pandora106
I've had that before, I thought it sounded familiar. I've never seen it written.
    2. eatfoodrecipe
gotta bring a towel when your eating bulalo...sweats all the way up! hhaha.
    3. Halconite
Is is true that the best Bulalo House in the Philippines is the one near Orthopedic Center?...
    4. eatfoodrecipe
im not quite sure about that! bulalo tasted varies on different areas in the Phils..
    5. Halconite
      He, he, he...
    6. eatfoodrecipe
      hahah! so sorry halcon. lol!
