OK so I have really had a problem figuring out how to do SEO on my site. Mainly because I did not understand that each blog post was capable of having it's own metatags. I was struggling with how to set up my site to address all the topics that I talked about and was really struggling on what meta tags to use that would encompass the whole site. so finally with the help of SEO workers plugin for firefox and All in one SEO pack for wordpress... AND simple tags for wordpress.. I think I am on the road to recovery...
Whew.. for an IT guy I sure can be dense!

I also use the all in one SEO plugin for wordpress on my self hosted site and like it very much. However, use of the plugin alone is limited there's much more that can be done.
You can have the best content in the world but if it can't be found by potential readers using search engines your targeted readers will not increase as quickly as they will if you learn and employ basic SEO techniques. Below is a brief list and following it you will find a link to a reference post where you will find more detailed instructions.
Basic SEO elements for bloggers
(1) Keywords in the url
(2) Keywords in the blog title and tagline
(3) Keywords in the meta description field
(4) Keywords in headings and subheadings in posts
(5) Keywords at the beginning of pages
(6) Keywords in anchor texts
(7) Keywords in the body of the text (avoid keyword stuffing - use them only where they naturally occur in the flow of the text)
(8) Keywords in Title and ALT tags (images)
(9) Unique content that’s frequently updated
(10) Site Accessibility (maintain your links)
(11) Provide a Sitemap
(12) Use SEO themes
(13) Use SEO plugins

Interesting. I just reconstruct one of my site and added a blog to it. I was pondering on what plugin is best for blog, so google on the 10 most important pluging for blog and found a few useful one. You mya want to try that. Save you lot of time to figure out what to install. BTW, if you are using worpdpress 2.8 it is even easier. Just click and past the name of the plugin in the search for new plugin and when found just click install. No downlaod, not FTP.
