Where do you find new music?
Online Music sources:
I am a big fan of Last.fm
After you have been using it for a while, it starts recommending bands that you should like
www.last.fm/music
I also checked out other peoples profiles and if I liked what I saw, then I would listen to their libraries for awhile.
Spotify:
Spotify is great for building playlists and listening to whole albums, it also scrobbles (talks to) last.fm and tells it what you have been listening to.
This is only available in the UK and a few other countries at the mo.
Blogs:
This music blog has been my favourite for the last few months, with a focus on new music and love performances

Follow the author on twitter:

Also I use:
woxy.com/ - online radio
pitchfork.com/
Any want to explain Hype Machine? I can't get the hang of it.

Thanks for the info, I was thinking of joining LastFm, sounds like a great program.
I heard LastFM picks up all the songs you listen to on your PC and adds them to you profile, can that be switched off, or is it permanent?.-
Yes you can do that, I think you have to download a plugin and that can be enabled/disabled as you like.
Found it
www.last.fm/download
You can turn it off, especially when you don't want the world to see what your guilty pleasures are

Songbird - built off of mozilla it can do add-ons for spotify, last.fm, etc. It gets a lot done in one place which just also happens to be your player too.

I find most of my new music by being around friends. I am not on the frontline of music so it is easy for everyone else to know about something before me.
Here are a couple of new groups I started listening to this year.
Old Crow Medicine Show The song wagon wheel especially
Joseph Arthur
James McMurtry -
I find new music from a few DJ friends of mine and my daughter. She is all the time coming home with new music. Some good and some not so good.

We have an independent radio station here in Pittsburgh that plays lots of new music from lesser known folks. I've found many good artists through them.

Have a teenager around the house. That will introduce you to all sorts of new music. Especially if they play an instrument.

I use tons of sources, word of mouth, googling music sites, digital music channels on television etc.
Once you've come across new music that you like, I recommend using SoulSeek software to get it. It's the best file sharing program for music that I've found yet. There are tons of users that you can add that share your same taste in music and it makes it great for swapping back and forth. There's no lag and doesn't take up any memory on your computer.-
You're very welcome. You can download it here:

Just a little tip, when your searching for music, it's best to just type in the artist name ... all the albums that artist has out will come up. Doesn't seem to produce that many results when you search with artist name and song.

Daniel is in my dashboard, because I follow him. He has a really good collection of music that he listens to. I follow his lead, to my delight.
I highly recommend following BlogCatalog's very own ..... drumroll ..... DANIEL

I have to admit that I am a total iTunes freak. While I read about new releases from Entertainment Today and some BC member blogs, I save an hour of time every week to review new releases on iTunes.
With all these extra resources, I can see I might have to add some more resources to look at.

They capture a large percentage of new releases, very well categorized. Usually :30 samples from the top 20 new releases or so in each category.
I think the older version was a little more intuitive, but the newer allows you to listen to samples without having to click through to a specific album or song. The samples just pops up. They also have top downloads in the columns.
I'm not sure how the U.K. might differ. I spoke with several people in Australia about it though. They say the releases are anywhere from same day to two weeks off U.S. release dates.
What I like best is, every once in awhile, I can check for new releases from people I like from my own desktop library. One click takes you right to the page.

I find a lot of my music through online radio: kcrw.com (Santa Monica college's station also on iTunes), kcscradio.com (Chico states university's radio station on iTunes) and also San diego's fm94.9 Big Sonic Chill show www.fm949sd.com/chill/index.aspx
I've never used last.fm but I may try it out now seeing as that's what most people are using. I am a little turned off at suggestive playlists though because my musical taste is all over the place and hard to pin down. -
Tiny mix tapes is a good source for album reviews.

Another way to find music that you might enjoy is to go to amazon.com and search any album that you like. Once you get to the page for that album, it will give you a massive list of other albums under:
"customers who bought this album also bought"
Basically it shows you albums other people like who possibly have similar tastes in music to you.

Since MySpace Music has grown to be a prominent music channel for the industry's A&R, it's also a great channel too see what's hot and what's being listened to right now. You can even filter it by countries and genre's, but it's a good idea not to limit the searches all too much, that way you might stumble upon something you love, even though you might not have thought so beforehand. What's really interesting is going through different countries and regions and seeing what is most popular there.
