Where do you find new music?

Online Music sources:
I am a big fan of Last.fm
After you have been using it for a while, it starts recommending bands that you should like
www.last.fm/music

I also checked out other peoples profiles and if I liked what I saw, then I would listen to their libraries for awhile.

Spotify:
Spotify is great for building playlists and listening to whole albums, it also scrobbles (talks to) last.fm and tells it what you have been listening to.

This is only available in the UK and a few other countries at the mo.

Blogs:
This music blog has been my favourite for the last few months, with a focus on new music and love performances

Also I use:

Any want to explain Hype Machine? I can't get the hang of it.

Thanks for the info, I was thinking of joining LastFm, sounds like a great program.
I heard LastFM picks up all the songs you listen to on your PC and adds them to you profile, can that be switched off, or is it permanent?.
    1. crpitt
Yes you can do that, I think you have to download a plugin and that can be enabled/disabled as you like.

      Found it
      www.last.fm/download

You can turn it off, especially when you don't want the world to see what your guilty pleasures are
  2. time2getdown
Hey thanks, I'm gonna check it out.
    1. crpitt
No Pandora for the UK Not found a way round that yet.

Songbird - built off of mozilla it can do add-ons for spotify, last.fm, etc. It gets a lot done in one place which just also happens to be your player too.
    1. crpitt
On that looks pretty nifty, have downloaded it and will have a play around

      Thanks!

I find most of my new music by being around friends. I am not on the frontline of music so it is easy for everyone else to know about something before me.

Here are a couple of new groups I started listening to this year.

Old Crow Medicine Show The song wagon wheel especially
    Joseph Arthur
    James McMurtry

All my friends know a lot more about music than me, it is only lately that have started to pay a bit more attention to my music collection.

Will have a look at the suggestions

I find new music from a few DJ friends of mine and my daughter. She is all the time coming home with new music. Some good and some not so good.
    1. crpitt
All my DJ friends love music that I am too old for

We have an independent radio station here in Pittsburgh that plays lots of new music from lesser known folks. I've found many good artists through them.

      Oh listening now.... Thanks!

They would have the bloody Beatles on the front page! blurgh.

Have a teenager around the house. That will introduce you to all sorts of new music. Especially if they play an instrument.

    1. crpitt
Is it music you like to listen to?
    2. MikeandTiffany
It's music. I have no further comments at this time

      Haha

I had a brief spell with a trombone that confirmed I have no musical ability at all. I am sure the world thanks me for realising that early on.
    4. MikeandTiffany
There are moments in this house where I really have to bite my tongue to avoid sounding like Simon Cowell.

I use tons of sources, word of mouth, googling music sites, digital music channels on television etc.

Once you've come across new music that you like, I recommend using SoulSeek software to get it. It's the best file sharing program for music that I've found yet. There are tons of users that you can add that share your same taste in music and it makes it great for swapping back and forth. There's no lag and doesn't take up any memory on your computer.
    1. crpitt
Oh hadn't heard of soul seek before, thanks for that
    2. AroundTheWaygirl
You're very welcome. You can download it here:

Just a little tip, when your searching for music, it's best to just type in the artist name ... all the albums that artist has out will come up. Doesn't seem to produce that many results when you search with artist name and song.
    3. crpitt
I shall give it a whirl

Thanks for those, liked stereogum in particular.

Also I think I had come across revolution in the head previously, so will be checking the new place out.

      Cheers

Daniel is in my dashboard, because I follow him. He has a really good collection of music that he listens to. I follow his lead, to my delight.

I highly recommend following BlogCatalog's very own ..... drumroll ..... DANIEL

    www.blogcatalog.com/dashboard/user/thegoodknife/
    1. crpitt
I already keep my eye on Daniel, I also check out his musical choices...

    2. Theresa111
Daniels ears are uniquely fine tuned, and I just mentioned to him the other day, that I accept him as a filter for the new music I listen to ... through his unwitting personal choices. I simply follow his lead.
    3. crpitt
He should comment on this thread

I have to admit that I am a total iTunes freak. While I read about new releases from Entertainment Today and some BC member blogs, I save an hour of time every week to review new releases on iTunes.

With all these extra resources, I can see I might have to add some more resources to look at.
    1. crpitt
Never used iTunes, so don't know what their new releases are like?
    2. Rich
They capture a large percentage of new releases, very well categorized. Usually :30 samples from the top 20 new releases or so in each category.

I think the older version was a little more intuitive, but the newer allows you to listen to samples without having to click through to a specific album or song. The samples just pops up. They also have top downloads in the columns.

I'm not sure how the U.K. might differ. I spoke with several people in Australia about it though. They say the releases are anywhere from same day to two weeks off U.S. release dates.

What I like best is, every once in awhile, I can check for new releases from people I like from my own desktop library. One click takes you right to the page.
    3. crpitt
I suppose it is useful for those with an ipod mainly? I don't, so that is why I have never bothered.
    4. Rich
Any iPpd, iPhone, cpu with windows, or mp3 player works well enough.
    5. crpitt
Hmmm will have to look at it now
  12. trailofpen
I find a lot of my music through online radio: kcrw.com (Santa Monica college's station also on iTunes), kcscradio.com (Chico states university's radio station on iTunes) and also San diego's fm94.9 Big Sonic Chill show www.fm949sd.com/chill/index.aspx

I've never used last.fm but I may try it out now seeing as that's what most people are using. I am a little turned off at suggestive playlists though because my musical taste is all over the place and hard to pin down.
    1. crpitt
      Will give them a listen

It takes awhile for last.fm to suggest things that you actually really like, but once you have built up your playlist it starts to get a feel of what you will really like.
    2. trailofpen
Hmm... I will check it out then. Somehow I fear the recommendations they will choose for a rock, reggae, folk, soul, jazz, classical, showtunes, experimental, dream pop, rap, dance, experimental, etc. playlist.
    3. crpitt
The best thing to do at first, is to listen to other peoples libraries, that is what I did.

Tiny mix tapes is a good source for album reviews.

    www.tinymixtapes.com/-Reviews-

Another way to find music that you might enjoy is to go to amazon.com and search any album that you like. Once you get to the page for that album, it will give you a massive list of other albums under:

"customers who bought this album also bought"

Basically it shows you albums other people like who possibly have similar tastes in music to you.

    Like this:

    www.amazon.ca/Fleet-Foxes/dp/B0017R5UAA/ref=pd_sim_m_8
    1. crpitt
Oh good idea and great musical tempter for me, as I love Fleet Foxes
    2. larrybrains
      Yup, they are pretty great.
    1. larrybrains
Neat how they use their own art for the different artists
    2. crpitt
Yeah I thought that looked really cool, the recorded tracks are sounding pretty great too.
  14. crazyTsu
    I like dancing girls music
    1. crpitt
Because you are a dancing girl?

Since MySpace Music has grown to be a prominent music channel for the industry's A&R, it's also a great channel too see what's hot and what's being listened to right now. You can even filter it by countries and genre's, but it's a good idea not to limit the searches all too much, that way you might stumble upon something you love, even though you might not have thought so beforehand. What's really interesting is going through different countries and regions and seeing what is most popular there.

    MySpace music, most popular artists;
    topartists.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music.TopBands
    1. crpitt
That is a great tip, I avoid myspace generally, but it looks like I am missing out on tons of music by doing so.
