I watch Fox News as much as I watch any TV news, which is seldom.
But I do understand (from various sources) that FN is the number one watched news channel on TV. That suggests that a lot of people like it -- more than people like the other news channels. It apparently even ranks very high in international viewers.
But I've never heard/read *anyone* say anything good about Fox News. I've heard/read lots and lots of people put it down, rag on it, and dismiss it.
I've even had people dismiss my opinion on something because I said I heard about it on Fox News, *even when I also heard about it on NPR and ABC news*.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone on an Internet message board have anything at all positive to say regarding FN. It's always derided and trashed.
How does this happen? How is something apparently so popular so disliked? Is it a case of just a vocal minority, or is the popularity a misrepresentation? Or do people who like it just not bother talking about it?

As far as your assessment that Fox News is watched widely internationally, that is solely because Fox News broadcasts across public airwaves overseas, rather than over premium paid television.
Fox News is more easily accessible than CNN, hence the reason why so many people tend to think all Americans are a bunch of puritanical, ego maniacal, war mongering imperialists.
I was horrified to discover in Paris that the only English language news channels available in my hotel room were the BBC (which was fine) and Fox (not fine). -
CNN was around before FOX news channel was even on TV. It lost ratings to FOX over the years.
FOX news is popular because it is the only non-liberal national news channel. Most of the country is not left.-
The Democratic Party has the most registered voters of any party as of 2004, with 72 million voters. Polls taken over the last decade indicate 34% to 36% of American voters self-identify as Democrats.

The Republican Party has the second most registered voters as of 2004 with 55 million, encompassing roughly one-third of the electorate. Polls over the last year have found that twenty-one to twenty-six percent of Americans self-identify as Republicans.

Going way back and someone will probably tell me I'm wrong or what ever. George Bush and Al Gore ran for the presidency. All the other network projected Al Gore won the nomination for presidency but not FOX. Because of Fox news all the other news sites said wait we must be wrong.
It ended in a lot of red tape and a crooked president.-
www.janrainwater.com/htdocs/FoxNews.htm There were a lot of factors in that but Fox news was a pawn in that whole mess and I don't think it could have been done so well without it.

It seems the Leftists have attacked and are spewing without thinking. The TRUTH is that FoxNews is the only network that consistently presents BOTH sides. Yes, I think it is fair to say it skews a little to the Right, but CNN, ABC, MSNBC, NBC, and CBS are camped on the far Left. FOX will present both sides of the argument. I guess those who watch the other networks don't believe there is another side.
Another big difference between the networks in terms of commentators (i.e., Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Keith Olberman, Chris Mathews, Rick Sanchez, etc.): the FOX commentators are honest about being Conservatives. They embrace their politics. The Leftists that dominate the other networks pretend to be journalists while advocating Leftist policies on a daily basis.
BTW, Shiley, on election night 2000, Fox News was the FIRST to mistakenly announce the state for Gore. All recounts and audits after the election showed that the right man won. In fact, given the number of panhandle Flordians who did not vote because of the premature call for Gore, it is likely Bush's victory margin would have been much greater.-
Oh my God! I'm going to cry! I'm so proud of myself! Finally, I've been labeled leftist! My mommy would be so proud that she has a daughter that does community service. I think I can be nominated for the presidency guys I have a label. I promise not to chew gum as I speak.
BTW politics make me laugh. I don't care who did what it's in the past. So, if you're trying to get a rise out of me, I'm the wrong girl.

Interesting. I think only two responders have actually addressed the topic. Others have just attacked FN.
Do people react this way over ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC?
As for the opinion on bias, one way or the other, is this bias in the news reporting or in the commentating? People like Sean Hannity and Chris Matthews aren't really *reporting* news, are they? They're more political commentators, right?
Sort of like painting all of ABC with the stupid brush because you think Desperate Housewives is a stupid show.-
I studied broadcast journalism. For the most part I remain objective. I have watched Fox news but like any journalist I don't make judgments based on one source. Usually, I do a bit of research yadda, yadda, yadda and go on my merry little way.
I don't watch news for the most part. I usually try to find it. -
In general as a station, it's very brash-- very filled with short clips of info, very intense and sensational.
When I was a kid, I was in the New York area when Fox took over what was channel 5 there. At the time, it was a huge contrast from the news media we saw at the time for the reasons above. And I think with today's short attention spans, it's probably even more pumped up now.
It's a tone. Very in-your-face. And that in itself either draws folks or deters them. It think it's a big difference between it and other other stations you've cited above, in general-- beyond the discussion of bias.

I watch Current TV, the network created by Al Gore. My mom watches Fox News, and sometimes it will have her fearful for whatever reason, and I'm thinking "Mom, you need to quit watching this stuff." Some of the personalities on Fox News (especially Glen Beck) are getting viewers by fear mongering. They act like the world is about to end every day. I do think that any news source is a little biased, but I consider CNN to be a lot less biased than Fox News.
