Have you ever had a Caprese salad? or sandwich?

With summer sizzling the States, fresh, homegrown tomatoes make a cool, delicious Caprese salad to beat the heat. Chilled tomatoes combined with fresh basil and a rich white Italian cheese, and topped with a delicious balsamic glaze, this is a salad that you can use for an appetizer, a side dish, or the filling in a sandwich! We may have something in common, might be worth looking at how to grow tomatoes at myhomegrowntomatoes.com/ They don't come fresher than straight from the garden.

I used to grow heritage tomatoes when I lived in California. Nothing...and I mean NOTHING...tastes as great!

I just added a recipe to my myhomegrowntomatoes.com/ blog for Green Tomato Pickle, not my recipe but I knew as soon as I saw chillies in there that it was probably going to be really good. I also added a link to another site that was doing recipes for a tomato harvest.

I love caprese salad! It's really hard to get good tomatoes in the Midwest (they usually are under ripe and taste terrible unless you grow them at home) and being a city dweller with no balcony, I don't have space to grow tomatoes.

I do have space to grow fresh basil though, so I use grape tomatoes, basil, and fresh mozzarella with some balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Fantastic. The grape tomatoes are so flavorful compared to their fully grown cousins.

Do you have a farmer's market where you can get tomatoes? I agree with you about the grape tomatoes...that is usually how the restaurants here present it, using little fresh mozzarella balls and kalamata olives (ick).

If you can find balsamic glaze, try that...I like it even better than balsamic vinegar, which I just love!

We have excellent farmers markets twice a week in city parks across the city. I try to go and get heirloom tomatoes when I can, but they tend to be a little pricey.

Olives = ick. I totally agree.

Caprese salad is my all time favorite food - especially with fresh heirloom tomatoes! I go super simple: tomatoes, fresh mozarella, fresh basil, good olive oil and black pepper. It's my go-to dish for for anytime I have to bring food to a party or potluck because it's so good and easy. I'm not that big of a fan of the sandwich though, I guess it's just that the salad is perfection, so why mess with it?

I have loved this combination since I first discovered it in Silicon Valley back in the late 80s. But it took moving to South Africa to discover balsamic glaze which is an improvement on balsamic vinegar. If you can find it, give it a try. It makes a good thing even better!
