Want to know all the facts on writer's block, and how to have great ideas at the snap of your nimble fingers?....

Oh.

Well, don't come here then:

www.cabbagesnkings.net/2009/10/completely-unfactual-facts-about.html

Here you'll only get a completely UNFACTUAL set of facts about combating writer's block...

Ones which won't actually help you a bit with your writing...

But which might make you a hit at parties because everybody likes the crazy person who imparts nuggets of misinformation and wears a lampshade on his head.

(Note: lampshade not included.)

Which leads me to ask-- how do YOU generate your ideas, and what happens when none come quickly to mind?

Also: is a lampshade involved?

Ah-- YAY! I'm glad someone caught that!

I love sneaking things like that into posts and seeing if anyone stumbles on it.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy?

Uh...All play and works makes no boy a dull Jack?

Uh...no...All playboy and no jack makes a dull work...hmmm...

Jack was pissed. "Nothing works!" he grumbled, tossing the magazine aside, and pulling up his trousers. "Who gives a damn about a paste-up playmate anyway? Gawd..." He swiveled around, looked back at the keyboard. Hit "delete". He shook his head. Why write about it anyway? Who gives a damn." He pushed back his chair. Looked at his cellphone. "Ah, hell...why not call Rosie? See if she'd like to meet for a beer. Update me on how her novel's coming. Maybe somethin' will happen?" He picked up the phone. Dialed. Leaned back. And waited. "At least get out a while."

Your outcome to The Shining would have been a bit brighter, I suspect, Rivy.

Thank you, Thrift, for the connect to the site. I bookmarked it. I like Stephen King, one of my favorite fiction writers. I also like his takes on writing, on "literature" and such. Most writing I do is based on short takes, quick story telling, commentary. I never took a writing course. What writing I learned I picked up stumbling into journalism and writing who, what, when and where's. I became a feature writer and column writer, but again the takes were brief.

Years ago I read William Gass's "In the Heart of the Heart of the Country" (I think I got the title and author right), and I liked the way he put together a story. I combine writing with drawing. Just as Jack Kerouac took up "sketch writing" I got into "writing drawings."

I've seen your word-sketches on the boards before, and it always makes me smile.

I like it when writing can be concise, but not FEEL sparse.

I rewrite old classics, set them to the modern day, and then change just enough to make it "original." It takes all the blockage, thinking, and creativity out of writing completely.

So Hollywood should be banging down your door shortly, eh, KoolAid?

      You don't even know...

H1N1 vaccine is now the number one cause of writers block. That is 100% factually unfactual!

It all probably started with the existential modernization of "Three Little Piggies."

Hmm that could be it! Once they declared that it was too gruesome for anyone to die in that tale, it was all over.

all of my writing jobs have come with assigned topics. I have not been affected by writer's block at all since I started freelancing
