I just read Entertainment Weekly's list of the Funniest Movies of the Last 25 Years and I wonder what everyone here thinks.

1. “Ghostbusters” (1984)
2. “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983)
3. “Beverly Hills Cop” (1984)
4. “This Is Spinal Tap” (1984)
5. “Office Space” (1999)
6. “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut” (1999)
7. “There’s Something About Mary” (1998)
8. “The Big Lebowski” (1998)
9. “A Fish Called Wanda” (1988)
10. “Dazed and Confused” (1993)
11. “The 40 Year Old Virgin” (2005)
12. “When Harry Met Sally…” (1989)
13. “Waiting for Guffman” (1996)
14. “Wedding Crashers” (2005)
15. “Trading Places” (1983)
16. “Superbad” (2007)
17. “Tropic Thunder” (2008)
18. “Napoleon Dynamite” (2004)
19. “Clueless” (1995)
20. “Best in Show” (2000)
21. “Clerks” (1994)
22. “Old School” (2003)
23. “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” (1997)
24. “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad” (1988)
25. “Withnail and I” (1987)

(Also, in the article I was reading, from the Chicago Tribune, the author mentions that he hasn't seen National Lampoon's Vacation. Are there any famous movies that "everyone has seen" that you haven't seen? You can read the article at featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_popmachine/2008/08/entertain...)

I have a different sense of humor, but I thought Borat was hysterical. I have to agree with 40 Year-Old Virgin, too.

I've never seen several of these. I was far older than everyone else when I first saw Grease. Dad wouldn't let me go

I agree with some, but some of them aren't really laugh-out loud funny or anything. I mean, even the top one, Ghostbusters, I wouldn't think, "That's the funniest movie I've ever seen." If we are talking movies that had me in stitches, Christopher Guest's do that, but I have probably never laughed harder than at Super Troopers.

Actually, I thought Super Troopers was pretty funny, too. I laugh to this day any time someone says "Shenanigans."

Wedding Crashers made me laugh out loud, a lot. Waiting for Guffman is just hysterical, but I don't like all the Chris Guest movies. There's Something About Mary made me laugh out loud the first 5 times I saw it, but not now.

I think it's hard to say how valid this list is because some movies make you laugh the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time watching, some you only laugh at once, but you still like the movie a lot.

Yeah, all of Guest's movies have been like that for me. It sounds strange, but the movie Drop Dead Gorgeous, my cousins liked it and I didn't like it at all the first time, but I watched it again with them and I was dying. I think I just like mockumentaries.

Two that come to mind that really had me laughing hard were:

    1) Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

    and

    2) 10 Ways To Lose A Man
    1. HaplessHermit
KellyBax, "O' Brother, Where Art Thou" is truly a masterpiece. It's right up there with Big Lebowski as my fav Coen Bros, films.

    get smart
    wedding crashers
    old school
    tropic thunder...

"Napoleon Dynamite" was way funny -- in fact, my son's soccer coach is named Pedro, and we've talked about getting "Vote for Pedro" shirts for everyone.

And I laughed til I cried at "40 Year Old Virgin". Still do.

But my new recent favorite is "Please Be Kind -- Rewind" It's fun and funny -- if you haven't seen it, you should.

I was gonna bring that up, too, but just googled it: 1979, so about four years away from being eligible.

Ghostbusters? Was that even funny? What about Meet the Parents? Meet the Fockers?
    1. okcrazy
You know, it wouldn't normally be my kind of movie, but I thought Meet the Fockers was great.

I definitely agree with "The Big Lebowski," "Clerks," "There's Something About Mary" (which saved me from a nervous breakdown before my PhD qualifying exams), "This is Spinal Tap," "Best in Show," and "Napoleon Dynamite."

    But I'd add "Election."
    1. okcrazy
      Election! Definitely!

Lampoons Vacation is a classic, no doubt.
I need to post this on SquidFlicks!
Thanks for the topic starter! =)

    My Cousin Vinny.

How could any such list leave out Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)?
    1. csiunatc
      Good point.

Excuuse me.. May i go to the bathroom first........ Thank you!
  14. LGramlich
Where's "Christmas Vacation"? That was funnier than the original, for sure.
  15. tiggyblog
Ghostbusters wasn't really funny. I laughed more at Goodfellas. Spinal Tap was brilliant, Vacation was good.

What about Shaun of the Dead?

I know, I have a strange sense of humor, but: Rob Schneider in Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999) was hysterical for me. If I need a laugh, I put it on.
  17. AngieSS
Saving Silverman and American Pie are two of my favorites.
  18. howisbradley
My list would include "The Birdcage" and "The Sweetest Thing" and anything without Mike Myers.
