Two German art historians, who have spent 10 years reviewing the police investigations, witness accounts and the artists' letters, argue that Gauguin, a fencing ace, most likely sliced off the ear with his sword during a fight, and the two artists agreed to hush up the truth.

In Van Gogh's Ear: Paul Gauguin and the Pact of Silence, published in Germany, Hamburg-based academics Hans Kaufmann and Rita Wildegans argue that the official version of events, based largely on Gauguin's accounts, contain inconsistencies and that both artists hinted that the truth was more complex.

What a peculiar thing to spend 10 years studying...

LOL! well if they get paid for it, why not eh!

although I must say it would make strange cocktail party conversation.

      haha!
      "So, what are you researching?"
"Whether Van Gogh really cut off his own ear."
"Oh that's interesting. How long have you been working on that, then?"
      "About 9 years."
"Would you excuse me? I just have to talk to someone else..."

I am just twisted enough that I would want to hear about it and continue that conversation.

I'd possibly want to know what had kept them interested for so long...but unless there was some kind of conspiracy about Jesus being a pimp which Van Gogh had painted into The Starry Night I would be edging away...

Van Gogh and Gauguin were good buds. I find Van Gogh very fascinating and this ear incident happened long before he started displaying the signs of syphilitic (or lead induced?)insanity.

Is that why he fled to Tahiti? Gauguin was on on the lam?
  3. Stillthinking
Wow, this actually makes sense. The whole theory that Van Gogh was so insane he scare his roommate off seemed a little thin.

The only thing that are sure of Gaugain is that he brought syphilis with him in Tahiti and spread it all over the island among the native females that he had sex with ( a lot ).

Actually, it was Van Gogh who cut off Gaugain's ear, and Van Gogh who spread syphilis all through Tahiti. Just to set the record straight. (I've been researching this now for 10 minutes.)

I wonder is this research will eventually turn into a book or, even better, a movie...
