I like all music. Todays is different than the 80's and 90's but it is still music. They just have computers and stuff to back it up.

Beyonce and Alicia Keys were both born in 1981, which according to Wikipedia is qualified as Generation Y.

Gen y born late seventies to early eighties usually their parents in this country are considered boomers. It's hard to judge until years later isn't it?
Did anyone think Madonna would have been Forbes top money making music artist in 2009 back when she first showed up on the scene? I doubt it.
Here are a few in for the talent long haul I think, folks that will morph with the times just off the top of my head.
Joss Stone
Pink
Amy Lee
Conor Oberst
Robin Thicke
Alica Keyes -
I don't think one-hit-wonders are the problem. Like mycmle says, there are plenty of "new" artists who have multiple hits. I think what has changed is the whole marketing of music, certainly in the UK. I remember being a kid, and a new song would be released. And I would watch Top of the Pops every week watching the song climb higher in the charts and hoping my favourite was No 1. Now, a song is released and it either goes straight in at No 1 and is considered a success, or it goes in lower - even No 2 - and there is a sharp intake of breath from the record company. 2 songs like that, and there is talk of the artist being dropped. I think that "must get straight in at No 1" thing leads to so much hype. And then we hear less of artists who don't get 3 straight No 1s, leading to them being called one hit wonders.
I think real music - all different kinds - touches vast numbers of people, and will always enjoy success because of that. It just may not enjoy the same hype that some newer artists do. And the newer artists who are good - Beyonce/Alicia Keys being amazing vocalists who can write as well - will no doubt stick around to join the ranks of other "real" artists too. -
i love music...let it be rock, pop, jazz, rap/hip hop and classical..i love them all..good music depends for me..there r great songs in every genre...do u know who were the bad musicians or singers of 30s and 40s and 50s??? u may hardly know them...but good and the best singers will always be remembered as long as there is music...if u dont like one, don listen to them..but there must be others who loves there music...just take what u want..

disagree, we have the foundations for a marvelous musical future. and yes there are some pretty horrid musical attempts out there, but these days kids learn fast. I teach one kid who is about 10 and he's going to be a giant of a player, he thinks like an adult. My 15 year old barely plays but sounds like santana without trying

Like Alcomum said, it has much to do with marketing and such, but I also think it has to do with music now being so much easier to produce. Anyone can get recording equipment and put out an album from home for not too much money, so new bands and musicians are popping up like mushrooms all over the place. With that much more competition, it's harder for any one band to repeatedly make number one on any hit list. Also, a "hit" doesn't necessarily have to be number 1 on the charts for it to be a hit, but if it's number 4 or 5 or lower, it's not really a big deal in the media since there's a dozen new bands to hype about, so nobody cares much. So these one hit wonders could very well be ten hit wonders, you just didn't hear about it.
Besides, it's a bit unfair to compare someone who just released their first or even second album to someone like Madonna, or even to Beyonce, who's been at it for over ten years by now. Give the newbies a decade too and then see how many hits they've had...
I also think file sharing and online music have a lot to do with it. A lot of people find their music online, but not all hit lists and charts take mp3s into consideration. They're just counting sold physical albums, which is pretty far from the whole picture these days.
