The closing of Geocities (Yahoo!'s free webhosting service) will result in the loss of a lot of genealogy and family history web sites.

I'm trying to make a list of such sites, and have set up a page on my blog for this purpose here:

hayesgreene.wordpress.com/geocities-genealogy-pages/

This will give people a chance to look at those sites before Geocities closes on 26 October, and also shows how you can contribute to the list and so help other genealogists.

I will also copy this discussion to the Genealogy Bloggers Group on Blog Catalog at:

Is there any particular reason why those sites couldn't just be transferred to another host by their admins? There's plenty of free webhosting on the net.

There are a few reasons, some of which I have mentioned. For example, if the owner is dead.

Sorry those sites will be lost! Hopefully everyone can migrate to a new host! I understand all the hard work that went into these websites. I never liked geocities as a platform.

Question: Is there any particular reason why those sites couldn't just be transferred to another host by their admins? There's plenty of free webhosting on the net.

The answer is "no". They can all be downloaded and moved.

      Excerpts from the official announcement:

      What You Need to Do
If you're no longer using your web site, you don't need to do a thing, but if you'd like to move your web site, or save the images and other files you've posted online, you need to act now by downloading your files to your own computer.

To quickly download your published files and images, visit your GeoCities web site, right-click on each page, and choose Save Page As... from the menu that appears. Choose a location on your computer to save your files, then click OK or Save to save the HTML and images associated with your page. Learn more about downloading your files. help.yahoo.com/l/ca/yahoo/geo/close/close-02.html

With your pages and images saved offline, you can re-create your site with any hosting provider you like.

Please be aware that after October 26, your GeoCities files will be deleted from our servers, and will not be recoverable. If you'd like to save your files, you must download them now.

They will be replaced, I'm sure.

This discussion is not for site ownwers to know how to move their sites. Those who are in a position to do so may have done so.

This discussion if for people who might find those sites USEFUL TO READ.

The message is "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may" -- not how to grow and transplant rosebushes.

"Gather ye rosebuds while ye may"

Nothing I posted here will discourage anyone from reading.

Did you know this: a blogger says:
"I can't read Japanese, but Yahoo! GeoCities Japan doesn't currently mention anything about closure on it's index page."

I have added a link to this message and other geocities' issues at my blog: mtindias.blogspot.com/2009/10/geocities-is-going-how-to-redirect-your.html

In case you hear anything, keep me posted and I will update the details on geocities related issues.

    Thanks for all the support.
