From 1995 to this year 2009, who would've thought this would happen! What do you think?

That really sucks a lot of free information will disappear from the internet
  2. ChampDog
I thought it has already been dead for quite sometime, no?
  3. shadowmoon87
They already ceased new subscriptions for webhosting.
If I remember correctly, they're going to end their webhosting service by the end of the year?
  4. greencurmudgeon
Surely it's a case of suicide. The amount of ads with which they burdened their sites was far, far too much.
    1. timethief
      Agreed.
  5. Mhaki
Those were the days when good ol post need be discarded unless you backed it all up!
  6. Friday13
    Good riddance, I say.

  7. qelqoth
To be fair, it's been dead for a while now anyway.
  8. timethief
I can' believe I keep finding this at the top of the forum. So what the heck I'll bump it too - Geocities is dead! (another excessive advertising suicide)
  9. Mhaki
Well lets hope for the best this wont happen to bc, wp, or blgr! Ya all know what i mean!
  10. wehireu
It was past its prime. Yahoo has a new service which may be of interest though, glue.yahoo.com They already have a better web page service.

Thanks so much for that useful information! Its just that Geocities got a lot of useful info way back and its like we'd be wondrin if this is the case, others would likewise suffer the same situation! Fingers crossed!

It's rather sad, but Yahoo! has been trying to kill it ever since they took it over, as the tried to kill other things they took over (like web rings).
  13. DollinNYC
Geocities sucked anyway. I always hated visiting sites created with them.

She didn't bump it, but hayesstw did. Shall we burn them at the stake???
    2. DollinNYC

      @Suzie
Thanks for pointing that out. I just didn't look carefully at the date.

@tt: I missed it the first time as well. These threads can be trickier than putting floss in your kids teeth and telling them to pull.
  15. kat822
    Geeze TT what the hell
    1. harveyavatar
Be lenient Kat A personality split, even if only temporarily.
    2. timethief
Suggesting that someone else has a personality disorder or a mental illness is an attempt to demean them. Please don't do it.
    3. jeremyjanson
@TT: How about public excommunications? You didn't even talk to me about it first. No, honestly TT, I don't think you should complain.

Great links, I might just save my webpage from the year 1997 that I made on Geocities.
  17. wagerwitch
TT those are great links - they are Canadian tho - so just take out the Ca part?

    Or what?

Prolly just go look it up - I have a geocities link and I should probably go take it apart and put it somewhere else.

Thanks for the lead. Geocities is going to go, with all its content and resource--not just the geneology stuff. Hence, I just did a post and new discussion thread on how to re-direct your site. Will appreciate your comments and suggestions to re-build our sites and get the traffic as-is:

My first website was there on Charles Dickens! I did it for a college computer class. It wasn't much, but it sure was a great time of research and creating such a simple site compared to what is out there today! I don't even remember where it was at Geocities.

Did you know this: a blogger says:
quote, "I can't read Japanese, but Yahoo! GeoCities Japan doesn't currently mention anything about closure on it's index page." un-quote.

Note: I have added a link to this message and other geocities' issues at my blog: mtindias.blogspot.com/2009/10/geocities-is-going-how-to-redirect-your.html

In case you hear anything, keep me posted and I will update the details on geocities related issues.

    Thanks for all the support.
