NOTE: GeoCities is closing on October 26, 2009. Thanks to Timethief: www.blogcatalog.com/discuss/entry/geocities-dead#comment_1053848 we have the background of GeoCities' announcement to CLOSE and what else is already done.

If we do our own back-up and post our content on any other websites, the content will be with us, touch wood, forever. Otherwise, our Geocities' content will be lost in the deep web.

I have done some research (see the links below), and tried my best to get back to the surface web--I just did my 2 cent, and not sure of the results. Hence, please try and let's share our results, of what works, and what does not work.

Here are a few links I found:

  • Geocities closing 301 redirect to maintain search ranking: forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1419350"

One of the problems is that even if the pages are moved to another host, there will still be billions of broken links around the Internet.

I've tried to do a bit here:

Thanks. I visited your website, but I don't see how you are trying to move out of the geocities, and have the sites redirected?

Well, the sites listed aren't his (and most haven't been updated in years). He's just linking to them so those interested in genealogy can visit before they disappear.

Some of those sites have been archived here: www.archive.org
