Hi all, not to sound like a total capitalist troglodite here, but I was wondering if anyone knows how to attract advertisers to one's blog? I'm assuming that you have to have a sustained high number of hits over a long period, but does anyone know exactly how this works and maybe even how to solicit advertisers? Just curious. Here's my blog in case anyone wants to check it out: spinachflame.wordpress.com/

Thanks!

    Actually
You do not have to sustain a high number of hits over a long period of time to have advertisers. Sales and Marketing of your blog is like sales and Marketing of anything else in the world. We sell and market ourselves - so you need to do the same with your blog...

If you want it to happen - you can't sit there wishing... wishing is for the Disney movies...

You have to want it! - You have to work for it - You have to have a plan - and then back it up with desire, ambition and everything you have...

    Here...

then if you feel compelled to do so - drop me a note and we can talk - about plans

      Cheerleading is great...
Now what are you going to do about it?
I shot you a shout Amy - and we can talk - as you were the first to ask (the second - but the other is different)

I asked a long time ago why Google does not do this. This would be a huge addition. How come they never thought of it there yet?

Let people set a rate for their blog for advertising ads on a per month basis regardless of how many clicks the advertisers get. It gets their name out even if they don't get clicks. Blog owners would be making much more money this way.

See the problem here is two-fold. 1. You had a great idea and went no where with it... you let it die in your head or on your desk and never took it to market and 2. You are still relying on someone else to do the work for you - The Secret does not work unless you back up those dreams and wants with real work and real action.

Next time you have a great idea... Bring it to market!

Go checkout bloggernoob.com written by a guy who's had his blog for 7 months and has already generated close to $10k from it through PPP and private ads.

It's possible, but I am skeptical. His SERPs are good for his keywords, but with 296 Feedburner readers, it doesn't seem like a site with enough traffic to generate that kind of revenue. Quantcast would confirm this:

      www.quantcast.com/bloggernoob.com

      But I could be wrong.
    2. BlueSunshine
I believe it for bloggernoob. 80% of the site is Pay Per Posts and there are a lot of ads. Also it helps that the words "make money online" are everywhere. That's all you need really, and you have to respect this man's hustle.
    3. carlgalloway
Not necessarily true Rich, I think he could probably get between $6 and $20 per post and he seems to write one PPP every day so it wouldn't be hard to make a few hundred a month from that. With his traffic and the PR2 I'd be inclined to believe he could do that with his site. Hard work making it happen, but probably his figures are more or less accurate
    4. richrf
I see. 10K over seven months. It could be. But I can do better frying Big Macs. Still it is pretty good if he is getting $20/post for a few hundred visitors a month. I wouldn't pay it though. I would be better off with Adwords.

I agree 10k over 7 months isn't much, however he states that he wants to duplicate this over several blogswhich at the very least might let him work privately from home and not worry about a regular 9-5. Every bloggers dream, yet very few of us manage to make it work.

I emailed Google long ago and told them my idea and asked them why they don't do it. I never get a letter back.
    1. BennyGreenberg
So you sent them a business plan and a marketing model. You showed them how it would benefit them as well as the market and buyer personas they serve. You explained exactly how it would make the stockholders happy as well as the bloggers who support them? And they did not answer?
    2. richrf
It is not part of the Google business model. Their model is to have publishers , such as bloggers, provide a platform for ads, while Google keeps the lion's share of the revenue. My revenue is a fraction of what it was a year ago, as the pay/click continues to decrease. However, Google is going to have a tough time getting more out of my clicks. It has reached rock bottom.

There are sites where you can find advertisers, but you have to have a steady stream of quality traffic to warrant the effort.

Here is an example. But I have yet to try any of these routes.

set up a button for the ad now, to show your prospective advertisors what they'd get, and set up an ad rate page with details and ad rates. keep putting up new posts, and send e-mails to companies that you feel would benefit from advertising to your audience.
in the meantime, have you thought about Adsense?

    best of success to you!!!

They are smart enough to figure it out. Smaller sites do this already. All they have to do is look at them. I am really surprised this was not tried even in just a trial period to select websites. I am sure it would get a positive response from everyone.

Say an advertiser pays $5 a month to advertise on a blog. Google would get a percent of the money. The blog owner would get some. It benefits the advertiser more than anyone. The thing with blogs is that you can have explosive growth at any time. People who own blogs try to promote them all the time. The advertiser would pay a couple bucks a month for the small blogs and may wind up getting thousands of hits as the blog grows. Most blog owners would be happy with a small amount of money and the rates would be set really low. What advertiser would not do it? The adsense ads only stay on for so long for each company. They advertisers get 24/7 exposure this way.
    1. richrf
Why would Google give up a slice of the pie? They can take as much as they want. Why would they possibly want to share any more with a publisher. The advertiser doesn't care, as long as they get good traffic. Google, at this time, has the best placement, because of the analytics that they have in place. Unfortunately, there is very little competition, and it will be difficult for a new player to enter. So, I just don't worry about it.

I saw an ad for "AdSense" below. How does it work? You say the ads disappear after a while? I don't have a Google email account so I'm unable to see the details of how it works.

Also, does anyone have any idea how one goes about courting potential blog advertisers? Where specifically does one start in this process?
  10. mikeny07
Google makes more money this way though. They get paid regardles if someone clicks the ad or not. The advertisers have no click fraud worries either since they pay per month and not by how many clicks their ad gets.

By blog owners going directly to advertisers, Google makes no money because the blog owners cut them out. Why wouldn't Google do it?
    1. richrf
But the advertisers don't go to the publishers. If you try the direct route, you will see how difficult it is to make money that way (unless you have good traffic). Google Adsense makes it easy for advertisers and publishers, and they rake in everything in between. It is like the stock market, or the housing market. The brokers make the money, no matter what.
    2. carlgalloway
Going private usually means you either have a very big site that the advertiser wants to be on, or you go for small advertisers in your niche or local area. One of my sites gets regular ads from the local tourist office and a bunch of hotels etc. Its not impossible, but those same advertisers are not likely to be interested in Google if you can provide a decent amount of traffic
    3. richrf
      I agree.

    I'd like to know too...

My Adsense account, I haven't made a penny.

    Let me know!
